A multi-ethnic society is a society which includes people from a variety of different races, religions, cultures, backgrounds etc. Multi-ethnic societies can have many negative and positive effects which I am going to explain in the following paragraphs.
The benefits of living in a multi-ethnic society are that you get to meet new people and learn interesting things about them. People get a chance to understand others and realise they’re equal to us. It makes people less ignorant and alters stereotypical views they may have had beforehand from media influence or friends/relatives. We begin to respect them more and understand their views on specific subjects. This could help people become less racist. Also, you get a chance to learn a variety of new languages. If you were learning Spanish at school for example, you could practice it by having a conversation with somebody who’s previously lived there. You get a chance to widen your knowledge about the outside world by learning interesting facts from people from different cultures. It makes life more interesting and less repetitive because without a multi-ethnic society everybody would be similar and you wouldn’t experience many new things. We wouldn’t know about certain religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. The only known religion would be Christianity so people wouldn’t be able to choose from a wide range of religions like you can now. Furthermore, beautiful buildings such as mosques and temples wouldn’t be around. Our country would be so much more dull and uninteresting. A multi-ethnic society can bring new ideas and ways of doing things into the everyday lives of people living in Britain.

...can have a good afterlife. They have a purpose in life and care what happens to them. Religious people share their beliefs amongst others and help convert people to their own religion. This means that a larger amount of people become religious. Religious people don’t criticise those who aren’t religious, they respect everyone’s opinion and don’t force them to do anything which created less arguments. Buddhists for example believe in karma which means that all their actions, good and bad, create past, present and future experiences, thus making somebody responsible for his or her own life. This means they’re more likely to perform good deeds because they believe good actions will result in a better life. If everyone believed in this philosophy the world would be filled with less hate, crime and sins, thus creating a more harmonious society.

I never knew that, “ Buddhism is sometimes called a non historical religion. In other words, it does not tell a story of creation, or speculate that we are heading toward a heaven or afterlife of some kind” (p.10). For me it is hard to imagine not believing in any of this like people who practice Buddhism do. It is difficult to understand how they might see where they will be when they die. I look forward to being in heaven after I live and complete my life. I could not imagine dying and not having any kind of afterlife. I know that one day when I die I will see all the people that died who I love and dearly miss. I had a best friend die and I cannot wait to be with him after I die.
In the United States, there are a vast majority of ethnicities and races, which is why we are oftentimes recognized as “the melting pot”. Because of this, it may seem difficult to keep ethnic groups completely separate because there are interactions between different races every single day, even though some might not even be aware of it. Some people, especially ones from older generations, see this as an abomination because they feel that races must be kept pure and also feel that assimilation diminishes the uniqueness of one’s ethnic identity. However, would it not make a person more unique to be part of multiple cultures? According to an article aptly titled “Black? White? Asian? More Young Americans Choose All of the Above” by Susan Saulny, it is revealed that “Multiracial and multiethnic Americans are one of the country’s fastest-growing demographic groups” (NYtimes.com). Because 1 in 7 new marriages are interracial, the number of mixed race people is just going to keep increasing. With the way this is going, there could be very few people in the United States who identify with strictly one ethnic group or race. In a way, everyone is going to be the same (mixed race) but in different combinations, which would still make us all individuals. When this happens, America will be more unified and will be less full of prejudice as it always has seemed to be towards certain races.
Living with different kinds of cultures around you is also very knowledgeable to many people. One could learn a lot about someone’s background or country just by interacting or spending some time with them. Ethnicity is not a set category we are born into and must stay in our whole lives, it is our choice and it comes from our own doctrines. This idea can create an eruption of diversity without assimilation by one culture. Everyone having a choice in their ethnicity will allow people to exchange more ideas and be more accepting of cultural variety. An ethnic minority is a group of people who differ in race or color or in national, religious, or cultural origin from the dominant group—often the majority population—of the country in which they live. The different identity of an ethnic minority may be displayed in any number of ways, ranging from distinctive customs, lifestyles, language or accent, dress, and food preferences to particular attitudes, moral values, and economic or political beliefs espoused by members of the group. Characteristically the minority is recognized, but it is not necessarily accepted by the larger society in which its members live. The nature of the relationship of the ethnic minority to the larger society will tend to determine whether the minority group will move in the direction of assimilation in the larger society or toward self-segregation. In some cases ethnic minorities have been simply excluded by the majority, a striking example being African Americans in the American South during the late-19th and 20th centuries.

Students attending American schools are taught clearly about the United States’ image as a melting pot; however, there is evidence to support that, while there is not an official federal stance on the matter (Sengupta), the amount of assimilation required to be legitimately considered a “melting pot” is not being reached. Although similar, there is often confusion about the differences between “multicultural” and “assimilated” communities. By definition, assimilation is the complete “merging of cultural traits from previously distinct culture groups” (Dictionary), while multiculturalism is delineated as the “preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified society, as a state or nation” (Dictionary). Early to mid-1900’s America entertained the idea of a melting pot, where people from all parts of the world would join together and assimilate. It seems, however, that the growing trend has been to treat America as more of a “salad bowl” (Porter), in that people are joining together but instead of merging as one unit, are maintaining a majority, if not all, of their primary culture with little attempt to adapt. This underachievement has left America to unintentionally become a multicultural society.
