Spring semester, I decided to change my service learning activity from volunteering at the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace to volunteering at Triton College’s library. It was one of the best decisions I made this semester. I was immediately attracted to the idea of working at the library because I love books and reading. The knowledge and power that a book gives me is unbelievable. Working with specifically the Circulation Desk in Triton’s Library was a very enjoyable experience. Technology was distracting me from cherishing the simple and pleasant things in life such as reading and a quiet environment. While volunteering at the library I’ve learned a variety of things not only about the library but also about the wonderful people who work there. Working in Triton College’s library this semester has help me to appreciate librarians and the effort put into maintaining a productive Learning Service Center. There are two different types of sections of at Triton College library: The Circulation and Reference desk. Although they have different jobs they work together to create a stable and productive library environment. The …show more content…
She showed me how to check student’s identification cards and make sure they are valid for the school’s new semester. She also showed me how to let patrons check out books and how to check out reserved books and videos to students. I worked with Annette on Monday’s and she usually taught me something relating to the library computer servers, but other times she would talk with me about school and how I was feeling. One day I came in slightly upset about the stressors of school and she reassured me that I would get through the struggles. She spoke to me about praying and how spirituality, not necessarily on a religious level could help me to destress and understand that my struggles are temporary. She encouraged me to keep myself mentally healthy in order to achieve my ultimate
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
This library system is utilizing all the technologies and materials available to them to serve the community in the best way. Despite certain social indicators and demographic statistics indicating that the library should not be overly utilized, it is thriving and is heavily in use. There are areas that the library can look to improve based on statistical evidence, such as reaching out to the low income population and the over 55 years age group. This library seems to be meeting numerous needs for a wide range of patrons, and doing it well.
Volunteering is productive. It also gives a satisfying feeling, knowing that one is helping people in need. Last year, in the process of getting confirmed in the Catholic Church, this writer preformed charity work such as serving food to homeless people at the Dorothy Day House. At first it seemed that doing charity work would be boring, but it was actually fun, helped people, and made a difference in their lives.
Throughout the fall semester I did community service at a thrift shop and soup kitchen in Lawrence. There I experienced things I have never encountered before in my life. These experiences have taught me a lot, and have truly made me look at America's underprivileged, in a new light.
I volunteered at the Activity Center for my Service Learning project. My duties were to watch the kids who participated in the after school program, play with them and help them with their home homework. I really enjoyed interacting with the African-American people and culture. I learned many things from the African-American population I worked with. I learned how the Activity Center staff teaches the after school kids good manners and behavior. I mentioned in one of my service learning journals that the staff was very strict and treated the kids like prisoners, but I came to the realization that maybe that is how they teach the kids discipline. I had the opportunity to be around all the Activity Center kids and interact with them. They were kids just like any other kids. Of course they are kids and sometimes they did misbehave but overall they were really great kids. I noticed that most of the boys want to be more independent of them, but they were such sweet kids.
She explained that she came from a very poor background and that this was the only way she could get ahead. I remember seeing the sadness in her eyes and the hurt of doing what she did. It was at that moment something strange happened to me. I said some things to her, but what was odd was that it was like something speaking through me using my body and my voice saying these things.... ...
Following participation in an Engaged Department Institute sponsored by Campus Compact, a service-learning requirement was instituted for all majors in the department studied beginning Fall 2002. All faculty were encouraged to incorporate service-learning in their courses. A training session on service-learning was the centerpiece of a departmental retreat in January 2002. In order to develop closer relationships with community agencies, the department hosted a faculty-partnership luncheon the following fall semester. Potential community partners were invited to meet with faculty in an effort to forge new relationships with the University. In order to institutionalize service-learning, all recruitment advertisements specifically mention service-learning and all new hires are expected to include service-learning components in their courses. As a consequence of these efforts, this department has gone from teaching only a few courses with service-learning components to offering twenty five different classes (thirteen courses) by Fall 2002.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
She was taking a trip in September 2016 to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. I was not able to attend, so she called advised for me to place all I wanted and my trials and tribulation on a sheet of paper and listed them according to my faith and hope and she will deliver the letter in hand for me. So I did and I can say she came back with a couple of gifts for me to use as a daily routine prayer. I begin to have faith not towards the image she gave me but more into my faith in God and communicate on a higher level.
In order to gain a better understanding of what the realities are facing librarians today especially with regard to positions that interface with technology, I set out to see how basic hardware and software are implemented as well as what the role of computers and related technologies in libraries encompasses. I was fortunate enough to conduct an interview with Trinity County head librarian Kacy Guill of the Weaverville main branch, where she has been county librarian for 8 months. Trinity county is the fourth least populated county in California and as of the 2010 census had a population of only 13,786. According to Wikipedia, the “racial makeup of Trinity County was 12,033 (87.3%) White, 59 (0.4%) African American, 655 (4.8%) Native American, 94 (0.7%)
I attended the in class lecture on October 18 over Texas A&M’s library resources and services. The lecture was presented by Daniel Xiao and reviewed the many applications of the university libraries.
She sat on the side of the bed, held my hand, and listened to me cry. She kept nodding and acknowledging my feelings. At the end, she asked me if I believed in God. I answered yes, and she said “keep praying and ask God to give you a healthier child.” I never felt like that before.

The Library Commons at Olathe Northwest is a natural extension of the secondary library’s traditional mission in a digital world. My library offers a wide range of elements to foster student learning in new and creative ways. My goal is that this space fits the need of every student. Students who need to complete an assigned task that calls for collaboration can meet in the library and plan, discuss and complete their assignment. At the same time other students can be searching for a great book or looking online for sports scores or prom dresses. The forty computers in the library offer access for any student who walks in the door. And just in case more computers are needed, a wireless laptop can be called into service.
