. As a servant, the term servanthood is associated with various kinds of duties such as servant leaders, servant teacher, servant encourager and other duties that may occur. All of the line of duties has a direct focus to change the mind and heart of people. The terminology originated from the church. It is clearly demonstrated in the ministry of Jesus and is expected from his followers to carry on the mission. Jesus demonstrated this mission when he fed the five thousand, when he healed the sick, and even when he transformed the stormy atmosphere. The base of servant hood is making the lives of others simpler. Above we see Jesus and Apostle Paul both demonstrated this quality in the midst of a stormy atmosphere. They both showed a sense of confidence. As servants we carry the responsibility of helping others. We strongly focus on assisting others and making it easy for them. It is important that we acknowledge that servant hood starts in your heart. One has to have the love of God in their heart to sincerely carry out the commission. The following is when Jesus calms the stormy atmosphere. It states, “23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? The first African slaves were brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. They were brought over so that they could aid the production of crops. Caucasians believed they were superior then the Africans thus making them slaves. Many believed they could profit from having slaves. Example: instead of paying someone to work the filed or do any hard labor whites used Africans as slaves. The Africans would work for free and the slave owners would save money. Realistically speaking the treatments of slaves varied from a mild mistreatment to a sadist horrific torture.
Servant leadership is a designation coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 in an essay entitled The Servant as Leader. In this essay, he describes the servant leader and a servant first contrary to one who is a leader first. The difference is the servant chooses to put others needs before his own while the leader first may later become a servant from the promptings of a sense of right and wrong or simply because they are coerced in that direction (Greenleaf, 1991).
The Servant Leader discusses the importance of leaders who adopt a service oriented attitude in which they care for the needs of others before their own. A servant leader need not be an actual servant or have ever been a servant to become a servant leader. Rather, a servant leader is born with or adopts an “others first” disposition. Climbing through the ranks may help to create a servant leader, though it is not necessary. When leaders choose to see that the needs of their followers or their organizations are the highest priority they become servants.
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that augments the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and creates a more just and caring world, they put the team first, and themselves second (MindTools, 2015). Servant leaders are able to demonstrate their traits through interaction with followers and other leaders within the organization. The characteristics of servant leaders include their commitment to the growth of people, stewardship, and building community, and provide leaders with the opportunity to experience change and to invite followers to change (Savage-Austin & Honeycutt 2011). Servant leadership encourages leaders and followers to ‘raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality’, and set their leadership focus: follower’s first, organizations second, their own needs last (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008). The servant leader focuses on the needs of others to include team members.
Slave patrols began in South Carolina, during the year 1704. Slave patrols were enacted by colonials who warranted the use and regulation of slavery through laws which limited enslaved individuals attempts and or ability to escape, establishing and requiring rules which required all settlers to assist in the enforcement of these new slave codes. Slave-midwives avoided methods and drugs that were common for the male physicians during this time. While doctors were using cupping, leeching, urination and even vomiting to assist in childbirth, midwives used more traditional methods to maintain control during the birthing process. Northouse (2013) defines servant leadership as emphasizing that leaders be attentive to the concerns of their followers, empathize with them, and nurture them. Those who are truly servant leaders have the best interest of their followers at heart and are able to help them and lift them up, selflessly. Because politicians, police officers, and firefighters are all considered community and national leaders of our country, it is important that those are are put into these positions have characteristics of being a servant leader. Although some may argue that we may not be “followers” that does not take away from the leadership impact that they have.

Servant leadership is the willingness to serve others first and then be a leader (Spears, 2010, p.26). Servant leader is the ability to listen, have empathy, healing of relationship and one self, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, and foresight to learn from the past, the ability to apply to reality and future (Spears, 2010, pp. 27-28).
