Reflection Paper
Inspired by my experience in the management course, I feel that my expertise will be best utilized in a senior management position in the future. My role as a senior manager would be to oversee the execution of company strategies, set objectives, and to motivate employees. Moreover, I am skilled at developing people and organizing my peers. A position in management will allow me to work and control teams, as I have experience in organizing and decision-making. The course lessons such as team management, workforce management, organizational behavior, and motivation will be central to the attainment of this career aspiration.
Currently, I am a 23-year-old student from China undertaking a management course. However, I admit that it would take me few years before I attain my future dream of becoming a senior management. It is apparent that currently I cannot hold a senior management position since I lack the skills and knowledge of becoming one. For instance, I have little skills on managing conflict and workforce management. A management position is only as important as the roles attached to it in any organization. I would like to take up a management

Regardless of the work setup, conflict is bound to occur. As a manager, I will have to learn how to deal with conflict, which has admittedly been an issue in the past. The current workplace is comprised of a very diverse workforce, and conflict often occurs because of the status differences. As a manager, I will be expected to identify and find solutions to all issues that might impede the productivity of the staff. It is important for me to learn how to confront such problems in a strategic fashion. The conflict has a very adverse effect on the productivity of the workplace, and it often leads to having highly ineffective
In this assignment I will be discussing the follow up questions following Chapter Ten in the assigned reading. The assigned reading is called “University Hospital,” The questions I will be answering are; Do you think the scenario in this case is unique to University Hospital, or do other academic medical centers approach HRM and HIT in a similar piecemeal, ad hoc fashion. What suggestions would you provide to the senior management at University Hospital to improve HRM and HIT functions? I will also be providing my research to back up my findings to the assigned reading.
Understanding how situations can become conflicts are important matters to investigate in hopes of preventing it from happening again. Every employee (in their minds) have different perspectives as to why conflicts happen. Such things include a lack of communication, feeling as if others are not doing their jobs, crazy rules, special treatment of friends as well as expectations that they feel are not reasonable. Conflicts that management may be involved in could be poor communication, lack of appropriate response to any given situation, not taking responsibility for their own errors, letting work & personal life interfere with the other, as well as not having good prioritizing
In several occasions, conflict occurs in the communication of one or two people. Several people have thought of conflict as cases involving pouring of furious anger in a communication process. Nonetheless, conflict is the misinterpretation of an individual’s words or values (Huan & YAzdanifard, 2012). Conflict can also be due to limited resources in an organization (Riaz & Junaid, 2010). Conflict may as well arise due to poor communication or the use of inappropriate communication channel of transmission of information between the involved parties. Management of conflict has various conflict management styles that include avoidance style, forcing style, passive-aggressive style, accommodating style, collaborating style and compromising style. Workplace conflict comes in two different kinds: task involving conflict, which focuses on the approaches used in resolving the problem and blaming conflict that has the aspects of blame and never brings element of resolving problems between the conflicting parties. In the perception of several individuals, relationship conflict is negative.
The textbook definition of conflict is when two or more individuals or concepts appear to be incompatible, and in this case low productivity versus high productivity is the conflict that must be addressed between the employee and manager. Power on the other hand is the capacity to do something either by physical force or strength and in this case the employee perceives that the manager has all the power in this situation. This now becomes a power imbalance or struggle of major proportion as the employee perceives t...
It has been estimated in a study by the American Management Association that managers spend between 20% to as much as 50% of their times dealing with conflict among their employees (American Sentinel, 2012). When workplace conflicts are left unresolved they can lead to dissatisfaction, depression and other problems such as aggression and violence (Whitworth 2008). The negative, sometimes hostile, environment created by unresolved conflict has been recognized to be a hazard not only to staff, but also to patient care (The Joint Commission 2008).
My biggest extrinsic motivation was being able to sit and watch movies in the guidance office all week except for Monday if I had all A’s and B’s. Another one was they would buy me lunches when they would order out. The last one was I was aloud to do whatever I wanted during finales if I had all A’s for the year. So of course I would get good grades just to get these rewards but I also got excited and happy (intrinsic motivation) when I would get a hundred on a test also I would not go to a party if I got below a B so that was my way of giving myself some intrinsic motivation. When I came here though it all changed and it became exceptionally hard for especially having to actually go to classes every day. So of course I had to give myself some intrinsic motivation by making goals for myself and I just kept on adding new ones. I also had extrinsic goals too I made goals like if I would get a good grade on a test then I would have one of my personal snacks and the same for other things too. Also if I got good grades I rewarded myself by going to stage crew and alternative sports. Another of my favorite motivations was calling Jazz. If I would do something good like get a hundred on some big test or something like that that was really important and vital for me I would reward myself by calling and talking to my best
In summary, there are no miraculous ways when dealing with conflicts. Each person in an organization has to take their initiative and think of a good solution to solve a company’s conflict. However, having experience and good understanding of the conflict’s nature will help you to deal with it positively. As a professional leader or manager, it is mandatory to bring the best proficiency and planning to overcome the conflict in a constructive, respectful and positive manner.
Conflicts arise in all organizations from the small start-up companies to the fortune 500. Whether they range from minor disagreements regarding communication or personal differences between employees, these conflicts are important to all supervisors. Unfortunately, in today’s workplace, these conflicts can escalate to racist or sexist statements, or workplace violent threats or actual violence. These minor conflicts if not resolved, have been known to disrupt employee morale, causing distrust between employees and the company.
workplace include greater total resources, greater knowledge band and a greater source of ideas. However, these advantages can also bring on conflict within teams and the entire workplace. Varney (1989) reported that conflict remained the number one problem within a large company. This was after several attempts were made to train management in conflict resolutions and procedures. However, the conflict remained. The conflict possibly remains because the managers and leaders did not pay attention to the seriousness of the issue. In order to maintain an effective team, leaders and team members must know and be proactive in the conflict resolution techniques and procedures.
Conflict is a basic aspect of teamwork (Levi, 2001), since the number of decisions that a team needs to make often evokes feelings of discomfort and stress. Conflict very often arises from a clash of different working style, ideas, interests, needs, and wants. Team conflicts can be due to high stress level. It has been experienced that in teamwork there can be conflicts and conflicts creates dissatisfaction among the employees. It is important that conflicts be addressed in such a way that it has adverse effect and it is very important to address the conflicts on the spot otherwise it would be difficult to handle the conflicts. (Jehn, 1995).When team member s disagree about the task themselves that how these tasks should be performed then task related conflicts occurs. It is also called task led-conflicts, it occurs when persons disagree over the understanding of tasks and their goals it is a disagreement between two team members in a group over the decisions. They have differences of opinions about a certain issue. (Stewart, Sims & Manz, 1999). Disagreement can be caused by differences in viewpoint and values, differences of opinion about tasks and differences in expectation about the impact of decisions (Levi, 2001).
It is very important for managers at all levels to respond quickly and effectively to conflict within their workplace as the longer the conflict exists, the more damage it causes. For personal conflicts, the organization should have a published procedure for filing grievances:
For many people conflicts can be a devastating or frightening occurrence, and for those many dealing with them is incredibly difficult. Some may not even know how to deal with these conflicts, which can create stress and discomfort in the workplace. If you are dealing with a conflict in your place of work, what steps can you take to remedy the situation and ensure your happiness and comfort? To start simply, talk to the person (or group) in question; try and understand what the problem is from their perspective and attempt to find an equal ground to work on to help resolve the issue that has arisen.
that may result in a struggle for power or position. Conflict management, therefore, can be
In the workplace, disagreement or arguments may arise due to several reasons. This can further result into a state of antagonism or opposition, resentment, avoidance, verbal assaults, and inability to work together. Such may arise due to personality clashes, differences in style, differences in leadership, interdependence conflicts and differences in the background or gender. With reference to the conflict between Norm and Norma, disagreement arose due to differences in styles. This is because Norma was after quick result from the initiated project while Norm believed he could work from home and still meet the expected standard. However, Norma expected full commitment from all the staff under her. For good working relations, conflicts should always be resolved and hence improve good working relationship among the employees both the juniors and seniors. Professionally, conflicts can be solved via two models; circle of conflict and triangle of satisfaction (Susan Holton, 1998).
Another area I employ is to consider improvement of softer skills such as communication skills, leadership, or handling conflict in the workplace. As I look to climb the career ladder, developing people management skills becomes an absolute priority. The role of leadership and supervision in American business is gaining increasing recognition. Just as society looks for a leader to define its purpose and lead it forward, business is concerned with the selection and development of people who can set their enterprise apart from its competitors. A new trending strategy that I have recently received training on is the concept of coaching rather than managing.
