As the Senior Administrative Assistant, I provided high-level administrative support for 33 employees while performing a variety of key operational functions. At the end of the semester each group presents their project to professors in the kinesiology field and other professionals. As a resident assistant at Miami University during my undergraduate studies, cultural competency was not only an expected quality of the resident assistant, but it was one of our educational goals as a department. My job was to advise, discuss, and ensure that each individual received the best education possible and felt wanted and safe in our respective communities within our residence halls. I’ve dealt with many students struggling with racial, economic, and cultural differences either with their roommate, a peer, or themselves. I’ve encountered many residents of minority backgrounds within my communities that have maybe felt dissuaded in their academic and social endeavors because of our fairly homogenous community at Miami University. However, it was my job to ensure that all residents within my community felt that their experiences were valid, and to help others and myself appreciate the priceless individual diversity of each resident.
Regular reflection and self-appraisal are an important part of any supervision and you should make the supervisee aware that this will be an expectation of their supervision. These reflections should include their experiences and also a reflection of how their practice might make the client feel and analysis of their work and its implications. Reflective supervision is characterized by active listening and thoughtful questioning by both parties. The role of the supervisor is to help the supervisee to answer her own questions, and to provide the support and knowledge necessary to guide decision-making. In addition, the supervisor provides an empathetic, non-judgmental ear to the supervisee. Working through complex emotions in a “safe place” allows the supervisee to manage the stress she experiences on the job.
During supervision, I expect my supervisor to constantly advise and guide me with my decisions. These decisions may mostly be work related; however, they may also have to do with licensure, or even school. I also expect encouragement and support from my supervisor when I need it. For example, if I have a bad day I expect my supervisor to be there to put me back on the right track. I expect for my supervisor and I to get along and have a mutual relationship where we both genuinely like each other as people.
During supervision, my supervisor immediately pointed out that the issues that I was having with this client was not anything personal. She explained how detrimental it can be to compare relationships and the different dynamics that influence a relationship. Southern (2007) illuminated how impactful it can be to work through countertransference and intersubjectivity during supervision and how imperative it is that the supervisor provide meaningful support and education for their supervisee. My supervisors approach was very non-judgmental, which is what I needed at the time. It helped provide a space where I could be more open and honest about the way that I was feeling. In my experience with senior project it was challenging, fun, nerve-wracking, etc. I really loved working with the kids and making them laugh and just playing with them. Painting the tires and the letters for the rooms was very toxic but it was fun because I’m very artistic and creativity so that was a plus for my experience of senior project. My least favorite part of senior project is working with my group. I feel like if I had worked by myself I would have gotten things done more efficiently and the way I wanted to do.

As an intern with Volunteer Services, I have acquired experience administering and reviewing background checks for adults 18 and over. I also managed the volunteer inbox and database. My job role was to respond to over 200 applicants any given day and forwarded all volunteer applications to the appropriate parties and branches. In addition, I responded via email to any questions or concerns that applicants or parents had in regards to volunteering. With the organization Donor Relations, I managed donations from donor. I entered information into the company’s database and created bookplate templates as specified by donors. I’ve learned over the years that while creating opportunities for myself is exciting, being able to create opportunities for others is even more exhilarating and rewarding. I remember striking up a conversation with classmates who were frustrated by the lack of support my school offered for their STEM fair projects. That day, I left school with one thing on my mind: if there were no mentorship opportunities for my peers, I would create one. In the following weeks, I formed a volunteer club that helped other students through their experimental design, acquired necessary testing equipment, and coached them through an oral presentation. For me, it was fulfilling to know that my peers were getting the opportunity to create and improve their science fair ideas.
It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. I am learning some important skills and finding out some things about myself and the tough skin I will need in order to stay in the area of juvenile support.
