In this self-reflection essay I will be discussing all the concepts that I have learnt in the leadership lectures. This essay reflects the thoughtful visions drawn from the class discussions.
I learnt about the importance of motivation and empowerment of employees in an organization. The motivational forces are of two types. One is extrinsic motivational forces and the other one is intrinsic motivational forces. These forces drives an individual to pursue a desired goal or an objective. Then we also discussed about the simple model of motivation. According to this simple model of motivation, first comes the arousal of need, then comes the behavior, then in the end comes the rewards. First the individuals determine their desires to fulfill their needs. Then comes the actions or activities through which they fulfill these needs. Final, comes the rewards that are received according to the performance of the individuals. If the feedback received is good, the individual will continue to perform in the same manner. I also There are two types of rewards including intrinsic rewards and extrinsic rewards. The intrinsic rewards involve the internal satisfaction of the individuals after performing well in the tasks or objectives. The extrinsic rewards include bonuses, promotion etc. I also learnt about the different theories presented on the needs. The first theory is hierarchy of needs. According to this theory, the needs of the individuals are present in a hierarchical manner, first coming the most essential need to be fulfilled. The first includes the physiological needs, then safety needs, then belongingness needs, esteem needs and in the end comes the self-actualization needs. The innovation terms include creativity, idea incubator, corporate entrepreneurship, idea champions etc. The characteristics of innovative organization and the creative individual. There are two types of brainstorming. One is simple brainstorming and the second one is electronic brainstorming. In this document I will share how I was influenced to believe in my own ability. Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
At the beginning of this quarter we were informed that we would be required to define and describe our philosophy of leadership by the end of August. I thought to myself- that there are two types of leaders which include the good ones and the bad ones. As today is the last day of class in Foundations of Leadership- I am proud to say that my view has most definitely changed and there are definitely many different types of leaders that originally thought. Throughout this short presentation I would like to define my beliefs and thoughts regarding leadership and describe my learnings and benefits from taking this course by describing my philosophy.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge is an organizational management book written by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus for those who aim to become better leaders. The authors emphasize that having executive positions or being a manager does not automatically make one a leader. A leader is one who inspires his staff, help them find purpose in their work, and effectively implement their plans. They separate the book not quite into chapters on different topics, but rather by four strategies that they have determined are vital for any leader to take on. The ultimate reason behind writing the paper is sharing my personal philosophy regarding leadership. I believe this leadership style will aid supervisors, peers, and subordinates understand the type of person I am and how my moral compass and experiences shape my decision making. The paper will more so cover leading through change, ethical challenges, empowering employees, power handling, adaptive leadership, and the relationship existing between followers, leaders, and teams. I hope the points discussed here will add trust to my actions while knowing where I am aiming to reach or head.
Research has shown that motivation in an employee is an important factor which determines his performance. Motivation is the “driving force within individuals” (Mullins, 2007, p. 285). It is the concerned with finding out the reasons which shape and direct the behaviour of the individuals. The people act to achieve something so that they can satisfy some needs (Gitman and Daniel, 2008). It is important for the manager to understand this motivation of individual employees in order to inspire them and devise an appropriate set of incentives and rewards which would satisfy the needs that they have individually (Kerr, 2003). Once these needs are expected to be met in return for some specific behaviour or action, they would work more diligently to have that behaviour in them and to achieve that objective (Meyer and Hersovitch, 2001). Since it would lead to early and fuller achievement of the company objectives as the individual would work more diligently, it would lead to better organizational performance (Wiley, 1997).
The performance of the employees as a part of a team or a group is not taken into account by the theory. This is a major factor that has limited the scope of this theory. Nevertheless, the success of a business firm is highly dependent on the performance of the employees as a whole and not on the performance of any individual employee (Aguinis, Boyd, Pierce and Short, 2011). The scientific management theory is an organizational theory that has considered financial returns and gains to be the core reason behind the motivation of the workers. However, the reality speaks something different as it has been found that the motivation of the employees of an organization is not based on the monetary reward they get. Their motivation is highly dependent on the fulfilment of their personal and social needs and monetary gains are one of those needs. Thus, it would not be right to state that the motivation of employees is solely influenced by the financial rewards provided to them (Mortenson, Doherty and Robinson,
Motivation is an important function in organizations to motivate their employees for their ability to perform well, improving their skills, increasing productivity, job satisfaction and employee extension. Employees also are not a machines that we could just program their task in their brain and they will do it automatically, they require motivation to actually do their job properly. And so, after discussing the process models of the Maslow’s “Hierarchy of needs”, Douglas McGregor theory X and Y, and also the Herzberg’s “two factor motivation hygiene theory.” understanding the ways of motivating people, the human nature, and the substance of nature. I believe that the true motivation can only come from within and also managers can actually motivate all of their employees.
The case study and readings in this class have painted a clear picture of the various ways one can be a leader, the catalyst that has inspired the least likely to lead to action and the many different capacities in which one is a leader. From the parent whose child is the victim of abuse to the CEO of a major corporation, leadership can spring forth and blaze trails never imagined by others. I learned that on my journey to executive leadership, I can begin leading in my current capacity as an analyst. I do not need to wait to be given the “thumbs up” to lead, as I can be a leader in many ways everyday. Leadership is not about magnificent speaking or major endeavors, “it is about coping with change” (Kotter, p.31, 2003). We all are subject to situation dealing with change daily, it is all about how we cope with it and how others interpret and accept our coping skills.

Intrinsic incentives also include a sense of achievement, responsibility, job satisfaction, purpose, involvement and ownership (Adonis, 2006). Generally, empowerment is an effective intrinsic motivations to aspire employees (Pearce, 2012). A successful manger should take the advantage of power to achieve employees ' self-efficiency. The process of empowerment is the process of transferring power, as well as the cultivation of employee 's loyalty (Gershon, 2006). When the employee is empowered, generally he may feel a responsibility to use this power in a correct way and keep team works more efficiently with this power. The behavioral change starts from the change of employee 's attitude (Gershon, 2006). However, if employees are indifferent to the usage of power, the empowerment may not get worked on these people. On the other hand, some employees fear to shoulder responsibilities. They are afraid that the additional works will come with the empowerment, also they don’t want to take the additional pressure due to the added responsibility. Even more, they are afraid of being responsible for decision making, because empowerment will easily reveal their mistakes on decisions. Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
