An example of my leadership skills will have to be being a senior section leader within marching band and concert band. In order to receive this position, you must not only be a senior but must show leadership skills and responsibility traits within your section. For instance, there are 3 respected seniors within my section of Tenor Saxophones, there are 3 underclassmen. In order to become section leader, the underclassmen must look up to you. They must agree that you have affected their musical ability and are seen as a role-model. Not only the underclassmen, but the band director must acknowledge your ability to keep the section in check with everything that is essential. Without a section leader, the section would be chaotic. I’ve demonstrated leadership qualities in various ways throughout my time at high school. During the drafting competition, my group needed some confidence and someone there to help guide them to victory, and I was there to help them. A group works together, but sometimes you need a leader. This leader will help facilitate and get the group to do what they’re supposed to do. While I'd love to write a four page essay on all of my positive attributes and why I can be a positive addition to band leadership; I'm going to narrow it down to three key points that clearly show my success in the band program. I’ve looked forward to demonstrating my will to become a part of the band leadership program since the end of freshman year; wanting to prove how much i've learned throughout my participation in the color guard. Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. I can step up to the plate if needed and I can take control of certain situations without being told to. I love writing and being able to express my feelings or thoughts through writing and poetry. Along with my talents and skills I also have weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses is twice as important as knowing your strengths in my opinion. One weakness of mine is being motivated. Once I start a task I will finish it and put 150% effort into it, but actually starting the task is my problem. Another weakness of mine is change. I have demonstrated leadership through my high school career, especially through my workplace. I am one of the few people in my department that is knows what is going on, what needs to be done, and how to get in done quickly and efficiently. I am also capable of making decisions because my managers are not always there to make them for me. I feel that in school I demonstrate leadership as well. For example in group work I am able to keep track of what is going on while prioritizing what needs to be done when to make sure that the important things get done first. As I enter adulthood this will work to my advantage because leadership skills are important as I enter the workforce.
My recent setback occurred when I applied to become the section leader for the trumpet section and unfortunately did not get the position. My freshman year in Ramstein High School, Germany, I earned and held the position as trumpet section leader for the intermediate band. Upon entering my sophomore year, my band director chose me out of ten trumpet players to play in the advanced band due to my performance as the trumpet section leader. The second semester of my sophomore year, my military family moved from Germany back to the United States where I enrolled in the Carl Albert High School Band starting from the beginning as a regular section member. I showed my ability to lead and help teach kids by coaching 5th and 6th grade basketball all through the winter. I have also tutored people in my class after school if they were having real trouble understanding a concept in class, as an example two girls in my class were having problems understanding matrics in math class and I helped them better grasp the concept. Throughout the course of a Master’s counseling program, moments of doubt, and a lack of working knowledge are bound to play a major role in the confidence a future counselor will posses in effectively implementing interventions early on in the instructional phase of his or her career. Corey (2010) states that an effective group leader, is able to become aware of their own vulnerabilities, and take responsibility in their responses. To become aware of a possible vulnerable area, a counselor must first take a concise look into their personal strengths and weakness, and then decide to actively seek out assistance with working on vulnerabilities. In exploring the roles of an effective group leader, I have realized that within the group process, I most fear the roles of a group leader that pertain to direct confrontation of a client, I also fear that the improper implementation of a intervention could lead to potential harm of the client. Attending to these fears I hold regarding group member confrontation, and intervention implementation is the key to gaining further understanding into how I can become comfortable with these essential functions of a group leader. The current paper will take a closer look into my vulnerabilities, using current research to gain insight into how I can overcome fears, when facilitating a task, psycho-educational, counseling, and psychotherapy group.

Being a leader in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position was in my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities into my everyday life.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic.
