My recent setback occurred when I applied to become the section leader for the trumpet section and unfortunately did not get the position. My freshman year in Ramstein High School, Germany, I earned and held the position as trumpet section leader for the intermediate band. Upon entering my sophomore year, my band director chose me out of ten trumpet players to play in the advanced band due to my performance as the trumpet section leader. The second semester of my sophomore year, my military family moved from Germany back to the United States where I enrolled in the Carl Albert High School Band starting from the beginning as a regular section member. junior year, I learned I could not apply for section leader because I was told it was based on seniority and experience/performance. This inspired me to work even harder to prove how much I was willing to work to earn the position. In the short time I played with the Carl Albert Band, the current section leader and everyone in the trumpet section believed I would make a great section leader and encouraged me to apply for section leader on my senior year. Near the end of my junior year, I applied for the trumpet section leader position. Then the day of the results came, my name was not on the list, this was my setback.
I asked my band director why I wasn’t chosen as trumpet section leader and was told that I didn’t answer the application question as to any of my personal band achievements like Central Oklahoma Directors Association and All-State Jazz Band. Since it is my senior year, I will not have another opportunity to apply for trumpet section leader and therefore there is no resolve to my recent setback. I was disappointed in myself by the outcome of not being chosen as trumpet section leader. Had I only asked my band director to verify exactly what he needed for band achievements, I would have known to list them on my application and would have gotten the position. This outcome has influenced me to look towards my future, to recognize my goals, to believe in myself and to seek out more leadership roles. I learned to not assume and to always ask questions to gain a complete sense of understanding. Even though I did not serve in a leadership position, I’m still part of the section and continued to lead the section by example. I stayed true to my values and morals by arriving to the band room earlier than the starting time and helped with setup and
cleanup. I learned about being flexible and adaptable and how to make the best out of any situation. In the future, even though I may not accomplish what I worked so hard to achieve, I will remain optimistic.

In addition, I should be a part of the Tri-M Music Honor Society so that I may better continue to inspire other people to be musicians and leaders. If I were accepted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society, I would continue to work towards mastering my instrument, the trumpet, and I would continue to be a leader within the Quince Orchard H.S. The low reed section to me is not just my section, it is my family, and I would love to have the honor of calling myself mom. However, Lauren will always be the original mom and my biggest role model in band. She was the first one to give me hug whenever I was upset, she made sure I didn't get sunburned during band camp, and was overall the most loving, caring section leader I most likely will ever have. If you made me the Drumline leader I would try my best to improve the Drumline as a whole. I would do this by helping other band members with whatever they were struggling with if that were a piece or maybe putting their feet to the music. I would try to help with any music problems including counting parts or playing accents at certain times and when not to. I would try to lift everyone up in a positive way if someone was struggling with something that day I would try to help them put that aside during Drumline or a practice to help them focus on Drumline because I know from experience whenever I have something that's really weighing down on me I go to practice and I think about that and it sets me up for failure. I am always practicing and I work hard for all the things that I have now and I want to continue that growth. I’ve gone to Area two years in a row and I’ve gone to State Solo and Ensemble every year that I have been a band student at Longview High School. I believe that if I was drum major I would be able to practice more and finally be able to go to state on the French Horn. I also was considering becoming a band director in the future and I figured that becoming a drum major would give me some experience and new opportunities that I wouldn’t be able to have if I was just another band student. I want to be drum major because they are always working hard and are always improving the band. I also would love to be drum major because I would want to inspire others just like me like Lady inspired me. She made me realize that I could help the band more than I already was by helping and leading the band in everything that we have done. One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Throughout everyday tasks in the classroom, or outside of school, I step up and lead those who need to be led. I constantly find new opportunities to lead others and help the situation any way I can. Every summer the band has a marching band camp for a week straight that we must all attend. Being an experienced band member, I step up and assist all underclassmen and show then where to go and what they need to be doing. Instead of getting frustrated when giving the freshman directions, I am calm and collect and walk them step by step until they understand, something most leaders would not have time or patience for. With many plans to help others and lead within my community, I believe that I have what it takes to be a strong, and powerful leader for the National Honor Society.
