A section leader is someone who is willing to go the extra mile and be the example. Someone one is willing to devote their time and energy into developing a section that helps create a magnificent band. To be completely honest I lost sight of that last year, which wasn't my goal as a leader. Although I can't change the past, I can set myself up for the future. The only thing I can do now is learn from my mistakes and push foward to be the best musician and leader I can be. I plan to fully take the advice I've been given and try to better myself. Our balance will be improved by the fact we would contain five groups of three, allowing them to listen within their trio. If they can accomplish their balance in the groups, they volume will increase drasticlly. Then I believe that the low range would increase in volume and the high range would be balanced and possibly in tune. Sectionals are used to read through music and work on problems your overall section is having. I would like to start rythm practices and have the clarinets know note names and not just fingers. My goal in doing this is to have them become better at rythms (adding to different scale arythmatics) and able to play them correctly. The reason why I want to become an Orientation Leader is because I see this as something that I am naturally attracted to. By becoming an orientation, I will possess the opportunity to make a batch of new friends. In the process, some of the relationships that I establish can transform into a lifelong bond. I feel like as an orientation leader, I will become a member of the unique community of orientation staff and create a bond that I can carry with me throughout my time here at Winthrop.
The low reed section to me is not just my section, it is my family, and I would love to have the honor of calling myself mom. However, Lauren will always be the original mom and my biggest role model in band. She was the first one to give me hug whenever I was upset, she made sure I didn't get sunburned during band camp, and was overall the most loving, caring section leader I most likely will ever have. As section leader, I would like to devote all my time, love, and leadership to my section and show what an amazing marching experience truly is. The LWC Color Guard depends on the capability of its captains and how well they can do their job as a section leader. A leader, in general, is someone who many people look to for advice, instruction, motivation, and most importantly, encouragement. This means that it is important for a leader to have the ability to make difficult decisions and do what is best for the color guard. Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.

Being a leader in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position was in my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades.
