The group of students, as well as friends, that I have worked with throughout this project have been so helpful. My group members consisted of James Gilcrease, Layne Ballew, Jamari Gamble, and myself. The topic that we all decided to choose was the flashbacks that Walter experienced in the story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The purpose of our presentation was to fully analyze and break down the true meaning of the hallucinations and flashbacks that Mr. Mitty had. Personally, working individually is better for me. While my partners seem to be reliable and smart, it would not be difficult to complete the project with ease. However, I am more worried about me being the person that holds back the group, or me being the one who makes the group fail. Since, individually the only person responsible would be myself, working in a group would only prove to be stressful. This was my first time to work within a group academically; during my degree my grades had always been dependant on my own personal work and effort, but now for the first time my grade relied on the work and effort of others also. This was a little worrying at first as I was unsure how I and my group would work collaboratively, and how we would manage to create a coherent module design. As I had also started building many good relationships with the members of my group over the last four months, I feared the collaborative project may negatively impact on this, if any conflict was to occur. Thankfully this did not become an issue and working collaboratively turned out to be more beneficial than I had first anticipated.
I enjoyed working as a group, as it meant I could experience other people's opinions and ideas that I may not have come to my mind during the time and gave me a different perspective on how to approach the oral presentation. Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Many times people forget that teamwork is a combination of the words TEAM and WORK. Which means it takes more than a combined group of people or a team, but it takes that and actions. Positivity, effective skills and effort from each group member. A good team member does their share of work in the group. equity and fairness are key in being a good team member also. A few other characteristics that help a group be successful are , positivity, complimenting other members, communication skills and fairness. In my experience and in this small group project I would be one of the more vocal people. By avoiding intimidating or shutting anyone out, it is important to have each person brain write to avoid any hesitation from others. In my current small group, we partake in electronic brainstorming. Each of us sat down at a computer and found articles that we thought was best fit to the solutions to the problem. After finding our articles we then posted them to google docs where we are now in the process of evaluating them. This makes it easier for everyone to find articles that connects to them. When we tired of thinking of new ideas we take a brake and talk about each other’s lives. I like to as all my groups what we plan on doing over the weekend and we also do it in our class when (Dr. Davis) asks us how our weekend was or even what is happening this weekend, giving us a break from thinking about school related items so we can start fresh.
