Science Fiction: A Revolution in Education System Science fiction deals with the impact of actual and imagined science on society or individuals. It mostly speculates the technological advancement that may be obtained in the near future. Although most of the story is based on fiction, different elements of science that exist in the real world are also depicted in it. Some schools show science fiction movies to the students to enhance the learning process, while others only rely on text books. Not all classroom materials can be covered by science fiction narratives. In a blog about science education, John Romano, a science teacher, said that he would show Gattaca to his students as a part of genetics lecture (sci-ed). Gattaca is a Science fiction movie which explores the issue of DNA being superior and inferior which is related to high chance of survival of the human being. He also said that students having seen a possible future through a fictitious movie became motivated to learn the details (Sci-ed). Science fiction movies have been helpful to understand some topics. For instance, dissociative identity disorder, a very complicated topic, became an easy subject for me after watching a science fiction movie Split, which explored the causes of the disorder and its effects to an individual and his society. It makes the learning process easier, less time consuming, and often more interesting. Although people in academia fear that integrating science fiction in course curriculum might degrade students’ learning habit, it is also true that science fiction fascinates students and encourages them to research more about the topic. This eventually broadens the students’ horizon of knowledge, which is the sole purpose of learning. While it is true that usage of science fiction may not always be the best choice for teachers as it requires time to find relevant materials, but, if made the right selection, students would very likely understand complex scientific theories in short time with little explanation. Therefore, science fiction narratives should be included in the course curriculum as it is beneficial to both teachers and students in the learning-teaching
In literature there are over 20 different genres of reading, and each of them contains many similarities and differences. Science fiction, arguably one of the most popular genre’s, is also one of the hardest to understand, however there are certain elements/characteristics that can easily determine if a book is or is not science fiction. The characteristics that make up science fiction are, advancements in technology and the application of advanced technology. In books such as The Veldt and Fahrenheit 451 both technological advancements and there application play a crucial role on determining that these books fall into the science fiction genre.
I do not agree with Richler opinion when he says fiction is a waste of time. Reading a piece of information or any novel contribute to human being educational enrichment, never a waste of time. Fiction movies are entertaining, I enjoy science fiction movies because they are interesting and mostly because they are short and easy to follow.
Some writers would tend to avoid controversy in their writing, to avoid offending or limiting their audience. Many choose to write brilliantly designed worlds, times or characters, that simply take a reader on a journey. They can use traits of realistic, non-realistic, and semi-realistic fiction. An effective storyteller can create plots, characters and settings which involve themes based on historical events, or mythology to present their tale. Classic themes within the science fiction genre; is this classic blending of scientific and technological facts. Then it is their job to take you to a place or time that shows their finely crafted potential situation and events.
Darko Suvin defines science fiction as "a literary genre whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of estrangement and cognition, and whose main formal device" (Suvin 7-8) is a fictional "novum . . . a totalizing phenomenon or relationship" (Suvin 64), "locus and/or dramatis personae . . . radically or at least significantly" alternative to the author's empirical environment "simultaneously perceived as not impossible within the cognitive (cosmological and anthropological) norms of the author's epoch" (Suvin viii). Unlike fantasy, science fiction is set in a realistic world, but one strange, alien. Only there are limits to how alien another world, another culture, can be, and it is the interface between those two realms that can give science fiction its power, by making us look back at ourselves from its skewed perspective.
Jules Verne heavily impacted science fiction and the technology of today through his novels. His science fiction novels grew popular and as a result made this genre well-known. More importantly, his novels predicted the moon landing, skyscrapers, submarines, planes, hot air balloons, and more. These works were read by scientists and explorers, like Simon Lake who designed the submarine, and these readers attempted and succeeded to create these inventions and explore to the places, like the moon, that are in his stories.
The term Science Fiction carries multiple meanings to people, which has led to various definitions over the years. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition, which states "fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals" (p.652). This provides a clear detail of what science fiction is, there are still many people that have their own beliefs of what science fiction is and feel society fails to properly label genres. Science fiction is a genre, which depicts what life would be like in a world with major scientific and technological developments. When it comes to science fiction, the exploration of future technology is a major element. Many stories and films focus on space, robots, aliens, a mad scientist, and/or artificial intelligence. “The universal themes found in science fiction—themes of freedom and responsibility, power, love, individuality and community, good versus evil, technology run amok, and more—present ample opportunity to explore complex issues and compelling controversies at length and in depth in ways that not only engage the intellect, but involve the emotions and expand the imagination.” The story “Flowers for Algernon,” by Daniel Keyes, is an example of science fiction that examines the impact of artificial intelligence. “The End of the Whole Mess,” by Steven King, is an example of science fiction that focuses on the fall of a mad scientist. The film “Gravity” is an example of a science fiction movie that explores the use of major technological advancement within space. In this paper I will assess the major themes portrayed in “Flowers for Algernon,“ “The End of the Whole Mess,” and the film, “Gravity.” Additionally, I will examine how these models of science fiction teach a major lesson about the imperfections of future scientific and technological advancements on society.
Fiction stories are those stories not true or factual and are created by the author. These stories are imagined by the author and narrated to the reader. The reader has the opportunity to add their own imagination to the story to make the reading even more enjoyable. Fiction relies on the imagination of the author and the imagination of the reader along with the elements of fiction. Fiction readings are in the form of realistic and non-realistic. When discussing these two types of fiction readings two stories come to mind. The realistic story that comes to mind is the story of “A & P” by John Updike. John Updike is “…considered one of the best of American writers of fiction and poetry” and his story of “A & P” proves to be an ideal example of fiction (V., and Zweig 370). The non-realistic story is “The Fox and the Grapes”, which is found in Aesop’s Fables. Both of these narratives contain elements of fiction easily identified and therefore entertaining to discuss. Characters and point of view are two of the elements of fiction found in these two short stories. Discussion of these two elements, expand on the knowledge of fiction stories through examples and definitions.

Without the initial assumption that there will be change, there is no such thing as science fiction, for nothing is science fiction unless it includes events played out against a social or physical background significantly different from our own.(Asimov 4)

Jules Verne has entertained multiple generations with his fantasizing vision of the future and technology. Jules Verne should be studied because modern influence and creation of science fiction.
The genre of what is called science fiction has been around since The Epic of Gilgamesh (earliest Sumerian text versions BCE ca. 2150-2000). The last 4000 years has evolved science fiction and combined it with all categories of genres comprising action, comedy, horror, drama, and adventure in many different ways. From chest bursting aliens, to robot assassins sent back in time science fiction has successfully captured the imagination of nearly everyone that has been introduced to it. The movies Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Independence Day are both examples of films created with the idea of advanced life existing outside the boarders of our own world. The foundation for each film in view of how extraterrestrial life will affect human affairs, however are very different.

Imagination is a word that applies to everyone. It remains a part of everyone’s life throughout childhood and adulthood. An imagination has no boundaries, and every individual’s imagination is one-of-a-kind. Imagination makes the dull perspective of life fun and entertaining. Its degree of influence on people and its uniqueness make imagination a particularly fascinating word, and this is why I was interested to delve deeper into the history and evolution of its definition. Initially, the first phrases that come to mind are “using your imagination” and “having a big imagination.” To me, these phrases mean forming new ideas by thinking creatively and having a big capacity for creative thinking. When I think of the word itself, I consider it to refer to the unique thoughts and fantasies that can lead to coming up with stories, uncommon inventions, and new ideas or concepts.
Hard science fiction takes a scientific concept and creates a story around it. It is written to be very realistic and even predictive. Although the story’s universe revolves around said scientific concept, this genre of fiction ultimately concerns the human experience and how science influences it. Moon, directed by Duncan Jones, is a prime example of hard science fiction. There are no fantastic special effects or whimsical extra-terrestrials. It delves deep into how a man and his humanity suffer the consequences brought by the advancements of technology.
Everybody; old and young have active an imagination, but we all express it differently than others. For me I express my imagination with my artwork. For example; when I was younger I watched a lot of cartoons just like any other kid. My favorite cartoon at the time was He-Man. I loved the show so much that I frequently dreamt and imagined of being strong like him, but I knew it could not be possible so instead of dreaming, I drew up an entire comic book of myself being a super strong super hero just like He-Man all thanks to my vivid imagination and artistic ability. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done something similar.
