School Resource Officer Ethics - Assignment #5 Part One: Have an offense tier strategy (compare the offense to the conduct policy of the school and determine the severity and assign the consequences accordingly) Have a “handoff” strategy – senior officers are called in to work with more severe offenses, as they are more familiar with the policies and procedures for such offenses compared to officers that may be on assignments for a day or are brand new to the school Have a “frequent offense plan of action” list – list would detail the frequented behaviors/actions and what the consequences could/should be for each offense Part Two: I agree with the officers’ opinion that nothing is free. Looking at the example of the restaurant owner that
... is brought about. For school faculty, whether it be the teacher, custodians, etc, bringing it to the principle to come up with a resolution such as detention, counselling or getting the child more involved in extra curricular activities should be considered. For instance, if the child bullied more than once to the same or different kids, perhaps more time in detention, bringing it to the attention of the principle and participating in extra curricular activities like cleaning up the trash from the school grounds, etc to keep that child busy. If it gets to the point of being out of control, perhaps suspending or expelling the child. Even If the child is a first time offender, letting the parent know as soon as possible to correct the issue as well as detention to keep a close watch on the child. The moment they act out again, the more strict the punishment should be.
For the purpose of this paper, the Houston Police Department’s organizational structure will be used to illustrate the chain of command. The jail operations are designated to Strategic Operations as you can see from the diagram below, and it is overseen by the executive assistant chief, assistant chief and captain. The captain over jail operations is responsible for all three shifts at the city jail, and he assigns three lieutenants to supervise each shift (days, evenings, and nights). Within Houston’s jail facility, there are both classified officers and civilians performing various assignments and tasks. The immediate concern that was brought to attention pertains to a sexual misconduct allegation from a female inmate against a correctional
A new policy is needed and most certainly should start out with holding schools to handle their own discipline situations, rather than relying on school security and police (Wilson, 2014). School administrators must be able to differentiate between what is a true discipline situation and when a student simply made a mistake. The rate of school suspensions have skyrocketed over the last thirty years from 1.7 million nationwide to 3.1 million and growing today (ACLU, n.d.). Each school needs to create policies of when to get school security involved and what the school’s security job involves. Unless there is a true threat to the safety of the school and/or its student’s law enforcement should never be called (Wison, 2014). The instinct to dial 911 at every infraction has to stop. Furthermore the schools must develop a gender and racial fairness; black children should not be receiving harsher punishments for similar infractions of white students (Wilson,
Another major reason why juveniles are ending up in the juvenile justice system is because many schools have incorporate the zero tolerance policy and other extreme school disciplinary rules. In response to violent incidents in schools, such as the Columbine High School massacre, school disciplinary policies have become increasingly grave. These policies have been enacted at the school, district and state levels with the hopes of ensuring the safety of students and educators. These policies all rely on the zero tolerance policy. While it is understandable that protecting children and teachers is a priority, it is not clear that these strict policies are succeeding in improving the safety in schools.
Senior Sergeant Greg Coller has been serving the Tampa Police Department for the past twenty one years and has been a sergeant for the past seven years. During his time as a sergeant he has served in all three patrol districts. Routinely, he has lead his squad in being one of the top performing squads in District II. Over the past two months, one of the shift commanders was dealing with a personal health issue and has been out for two months. His absence created a void in leadership that could have adversely affected the crime fighting capabilities within the district. In his absence Senior Greg Coller, without hesitation, immediately stepped up to assist with the shift commander’s responsibilities to ensure the absence did not impact the crime fight within District III.
Schools inevitably must deal with disciplinary action when it comes to misconduct in students. However, at what point should the courts and law enforcement intervene? “Zero tolerance” policies started as a trend in the school setting during the 1990s in “response to the widespread perception that juvenile violence was increasing and school officials needed to take desperate measures to address the problem” (Aull 2012:182-183). However, national statistics indicated a decrease in juvenile’s share of crime during the influx of zero tolerance policies in schools (National Crime Justice Reference Service 2005).
Everyday law enforcement personal have the possibility to face dangerous events in their daily duties. In performing such duties a police officer could come by a seemingly ordinary task, and in a blink of an eye the event can turn threatening and possible deadly. When or if this happens to an officer they won’t have
It takes a while to change any behavior. Part of the plan should be effective consequence strategies. Planned consequences reinforce the acquisition and use of alternative skills and reduce the effectiveness of problem behavior should it continue to occur. Having planned consequences should help teach the student that his/her use of alternative skills is a better way to bring about the desired result. Because it does take a while for a behavior intervention plan to change a student 's behavior, it is important that the IEP team decide what will happen when the problem behavior still occurs. If it is a manageable behavior, it is important to come up with responses that discourage the problem behavior and do not provide the function or desired result of the behavior. In some cases the behavior may be extreme. The IEP team should develop a crisis plan to address those situations. First the group needs to define what is a crisis. Then they should describe the intervention procedures to be put into place including who will be involved. They must identify the resources needed to implement the plan and agree on the procedures for documenting the use of the crisis
When it pertains to the behavior of the students, as a whole the discipline of the school is pretty good with only a few disciplinary problems. The handling of the students who would misbehave was firm and understandable. First coach will give a warning for the first offense. After that he would bring the student to the side and explain the consequences that will follow if the student decides to act up again. If the child misbehave for the third time, it was a phone call home or ISS was the punishment. This method was successful from my knowledge and
In Florida, every law enforcement official uses the tools of planning, management, and evaluation. For example, a patrol officer plans how to cover a beat, makes rounds or manage activities, and evaluates how they did at the end of the day. An officer plans what to do and how to do it before taking action. Unfortunately, this same approach is not consistently applied in police agencies and security operations as a whole. In fact, although a certain degree of planning is usually conducted by all prevention organizations, the major emphasis has traditionally been on the management and evaluation of an officers work; every sergeant knows to manage a police force in such a way that the commander will conclude that they are doing a good job. The major purpose of the discussion that follows is to provide crime prevention personnel information about planning, management, and evaluation so they can take advantage of those tools in performing their jobs.
On my first day at Dunn Middle School, I learned that I had the gifted and talented classes, and assumed that discipline would be no problem for me. There was minimal chatter and the students seemed eager to learn. When I walked in on the second day, my co-op handed me a sheet of paper with the suspensions listed. This floored me, the infractions included fighting and sexual harassment. Over the next few weeks I saw that both out of school and in school suspensions were given a lot.
... well they handle each situation without crossing the line” (Chaney). It is highly important for police academies to hire suitable and qualified officers; and provide a broad and continuous training, with good supervision to help decrease the use of excessive force in law enforcement officers.
as officers to serve and protect. Three possible solutions to this problem would be firing the
Other thing we could do is installing cameras so if something does happen and we don 't see or catch it in time we have it on camera and can punish that student probably. Furthermore we should consider that we won 't be able to see everything that is going on in the hallways or outside of school. We need to do the best we can so that the students know that school is a safe environment and they shouldn 't dread coming to school everyday or skipping school because they know that that one person is going to be there and is going to pick on them and tell them that they are stupid or are weird or is just plain rude to them. We need to enforce these rules as best as we
If they display bad behavior they 'll be a consequence that goes along with it. I like that in the book Fay how they believe discipline should be handle. In my classroom I don 't want to take away from any learning time. As a teacher I will give myself and the student who promoted bad behavior enough time to cool down before handling the situation. Once I have time, and only on my time that is when I will address the issue. I will give the student two options of discipline and allow them to choose, but the two options will be of both at I approve of. Once the issue is done, it 's
