Good morning Professor Waltz and class. Advances in technology enabled nursing professionals to access medical and nursing databases and health information for practice, education and research. But how to find out that the information we use is reliable? According to Lesson 2, there are certain criteria which we should use when evaluating our resources:"authority, information, objectivity, ease of navigation, and privacy and security policies." (CCN, 2016). So let’s evaluate web site and scholarly database.
In scholarly database it is easy to determine who is the author (usually at the end of the article or journal). Most scholarly databases are peer-reviewed , this means they are reviewed by experts, editors and editorial staff, and contain

In nursing both are important, as they can help us with patient education and self education as well. But also it is very important to find out if this web site is credible, and if we can rely on the information provided. Social media may aldo be used for patient education purposes. According to National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health “Special tools can help you verify that social media accounts are what they claim to be. Some social networking sites have symbols that indicate that an account has been verified. For example, Twitter uses a blue badge. The Federal Government has a tool to verify social media accounts that claim to belong to Federal agencies: http://registry.usa.gov/accounts/verify. Another way to find out whether an account is real is to go to the organization’s Web site and look for a link to the social networking site. That link should take you to the organization’s legitimate account. Additionally, many organizations will include the fact that the platform is “official” in their information. Either in the Twitter biography or Facebook About section, many organizations state “the official Facebook/Twitter page of [name of organization].”(NCCAM,
4. Does the organization have a social media account? If so, do they post things that appeal to their target audience? Yes, the FCADV has social media accounts that include:

Organizations want to ensure their image is protected and understand that social media is an essential part of public awareness. When a corporation exercises social responsibility in the form of fundraising or setting up employee giving programs, using social media to promote these actions helps to create a positive branding environment, and it’s a great way to engage with your audience on a deeper level that goes beyond your products or services (Frontstream,
Due to technology progressing as it is social media is becoming more and more popular. Per (Williams & Hopper, 2015) “discussing your nursing shift on Facebook is not a safe practice, even if you do not use the patient’s name.” Without knowing you could be violating HIPPA when you post a picture or status. “Taking photos in patient setting on personal devices, posting patient information, including images such as photos or x-rays on social media sites” is said to violate HIPPA. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) Also, it is said that employers look at social media and your pages when they’re considering hiring you. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) As you can see using social media when in the patient setting is very dangerous as it can cost you not getting a job. Being conscious of what you post is important for your job's sake and for you and your facilities professionalism. Social media is very useful for research to provide for the patient care, but we must find a way to use it so it does no harm to the patients and gets the most of
In the past few years, the popularity of social media has increased tremendously. The board and evolving term ‘social media’ can be defined as a group of web-based applications and technology such as Facebook and Twitter that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content (Power, 2014). A myriad number of social media tools such as Facebook, YouTube, WebMD are available for health care professionals in Australia and globally (Power, 2014). Social Media is valued in health care as it can improve professional networking, student’s education,
I used the search engines Google, Yahoo, and Hotbot to find these web pages. I also found many other web pages on other search engines pertaining to my essay subject, but only used the three pages shown above. I tried to use a wide variety of search engines to get a wide variety of search responses. I found that most search engines reproduce many of the same pages. Out of the search engines used, I found that Google was the easiest and had the most responses. Not all of these responses were valid, hence the reason for using more then one search engine. To determine the validity of the web pages used in my essay I researched the validity of the organization that posted the web page and the authors or journals the authors were writing for.
Social media is affecting all spheres of life and no profession is left untouched by the impact of social media and nursing profession is no exception. Nobody can deny the benefits of social media for the profession of nursing yet its disadvantages for the registered nurses and student nurses during clinical practice cannot be ignored. “Social media can be defined as the constellation of internet-based tools that help a user to connect, collaborate, and communicate with others in real time” (Ressler & Glazer, 2010). Social media is growing at a very rapid rate and is now the mainstream communication method for most of the global population (http://www.internetworldstats.com/facebook.htm). It has brought a tremendous revolution in communication and disseminating information to nurses round the world.
“The rapid growth and accessibility of social networking websites has fundamentally changed the way people manage information about their personal and professional lives” (Garner & O'Sullivan, 2010 p.113). Even when primarily used for personal or entertainment reasons, nurses need to be mindful that when using social media others (such as employers or patients) may use it to make judgments of a professional
I will begin my social media audit by first determining the most popular and most used social media sites on the Internet. According to www.ebizmba.com, the top 5 social networking websites are Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Myspace. (Ebiz-media, 2012) Having found this information I am confident I will be able to provide the most accurate information needed. I proceeded to do a Google search for Facebook, Twitter, LinedIn, Pinterest, and Myspace, and it took me less then 5 minutes to create an account for myself. I was then able to simply do a search for the Nike company within all social media sites and find the results instantly. There were some doubts about whether or not the twitter account was indeed ran by the Nike company, and not just a fake account made by somebody outside the organization. My doubts were put to rest as stated in the Twitter help center, that if a...
Many organizations have had to change the way they operate because social media has become such a powerhouse that has to be implemented in their marketing and communication strategies.
It offers learning, amusement, enhancement, and personal growth. Because of this, parents are encouraging their children to use social media wisely (Tartari 2015). According to O'Keeffe, et al, (2011), the social media Facebook and other social media programs enables students to gather outside of class for the purpose of integrating and exchanging ideas about class works and assignments. Hence, the benefits of SNS use brought about by good internet and media literacy improves the critical thinking skills to understand, analyze and make media content. (Collin et al, 2011). They use SNS to search for information about health such as dieting and physical fitness. About 17 percent using the internet have said that they consult SNS for health concerns or topics that are difficult to open up to others, such as illegal drug use and sexual health (Lenhart et al,
Coca-Cola is very active in the social media world as well. They use networks such as: Google+, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram to spread the message about their brand (Cocacola.com). Through social media Coca-Cola encourages users to share stories, pictures, and videos. Coca Cola uses social media to advertise products, bring awareness to products, introduce products, connect and communicate with its consumer base. They use social media also to promote brand loyalty by its consumers. The main sites that I came across as the most accessed were Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and blogs.
Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to access company information, photos and employees as well as ask questions and express personal experiences with the company. It also allows potential employees to understand the vibe of the organization and gain a deeper and more personal understanding than a website. However, with social media, it is important to not ove...
When it comes to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, nobody wants to think about the negative effects it has on patients. Brian Cayko, the director of clinical education in the respiratory care program at Great Falls College, Montana State University in Great Falls, Montana argues that social media makes it easier for patients. When a patient is not able to acquire care at the medical facility, they can get in touch with their respiratory therapist with the use of social media sites. Cayko also states that social media sites can be helpful as “educational resources, patient support and social and professional networking.” I think that Cayko knows that everyone must remember the negative things about social media and the internet, with the understanding that just because it’s on the web doesn’t mean that it is the truth. No, not everything is wrong with social media sites, I am involved in social media sites myself; however, personally I know that when it comes to an occupation especially in the medical field, you have to be more aware of the negatives than the
William Goossen’s theory can be applied in nursing practice to develop nursing informatics skills and knowledge, as well as develop technological system competencies among nurses to collect, process, retrieve and communicate pertinent information across health care organizations (Goossen, 2000). This theory is highly applicable in addressing matters related to electronic health records, which are currently characterized with issues of privacy and confidentiality in relation to storage, retrieval and reproduction of patient health information. The model also provides broad applicability in guiding research at any clinical setting and contributes to the discipline of nursing by simplifying and enhancing documentation and storage of patient’s health information and by allowing better utilization of nursing resources (Elkind, 2009).
