Spending more time than anyone has ever spent looking for one piece of clothing, the young women in Celebrations of the Heart went from tears to cheers as they found the dress of their dreams. On Thursday, October 22, 2015, from 2:00-4:45pm, I observed a bridal gown shopping appointment at Celebrations of the Heart in Manhattan, KS. Though shows on TV such as “Say Yes to the Dress” portray what it is like to hunt for a perfect wedding gown, I chose to go into the field for one of these appointments in order to observe the events and emotions as they happen organically.
DESCRIPTIVE NOTES:
Setting: The bridal appointment that I observed took place at 2:00pm in the small, locally owned, bridal shop named Celebrations of the Heart. Nestled into the shopping strip on Poyntz Avenue, the outside of

Due to its location on a corner, the floor length windows on both sides of the store let in a lot of light, as well as allow for window displays of dresses. The inside of the store is busy with many racks of both colorful prom dresses and a wide array of bridal gowns. The floor has light brown, almost purple carpet with black and white plush rugs and tan chairs in the various sitting areas that are arranged in horseshoe shapes. Between the chairs sits a small table that holds bridal magazines and a tissue box. A large set of floor-to-ceiling mirrors lines the wall behind two black pedestals for clients to stand on in order to view their dresses better. Depending on the time you are in the store, the clientele is usually all women, usually ranging from young teen to upper 20s. In the time I went there were not very many younger girls looking at prom dresses, but there were a handful of groups looking at
The article opens up by introducing a group of eight women, known as “The Traveling Bachelorette Party,” having a small get-together on a Wednesday night to watch one of their favorite reality shows, The Bachelorette. After having the role of being a mother and a wife, a woman expects to be apart from responsibilities and feel the lightness of freedom. Especially after having the life of a princess and caring royal blood, “…the way in which it stuffed and bulged her worn old porte-monnaie gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years” (Chopin). Ms. Sommers had to adapt to her new home which was in a poor shelter next to her husband, this proves that in a period of time Ms. Sommers was rich, but her marriage welcomed her into life of poverty. Men try to look down on women and make them feel like they should have more responsibilities it is why women want to enjoy their wants selfishly. Ms. Sommers was attracted to a silk stocking that was on sale even though she knew it wasn’t a need, but a want. Kate uses imagery to create meaning to every object in the short story. “But she went on feeling the soft, sheeny luxurious things—with both hands now, holding them up to see them glisten, and to feel them glide serpent-like through her fingers” (Chopin). The silk stocking represents Ms. Sommer’s temptation for having something that suits her desires. When she thinks about the future it looks like a thin monster and instead she lives by everyday ...
At the age of sixteen, the mail-order bride herself was sent to Illinois to marry my grandfather. By definition today, a mail-order bride is “a woman who lists herself in catalogues and is selected by men for marriage( ). Therefore, she was ordered, like an object, to be delivered to my grandfather. Being a poor female immigrant from Germany during this time period, there weren’t many things that Irna Folt could do to obtain
Colette the author of “ The Hand” describes the newly found emotions of a teenage bride shortly after her wedding through the description of her husband’s hand. The young newly-wed at the beginning of the story looks around her new home and admires the differences between this home and her pre-marital home. The adolescent wife unable to sleep at night because of her excitement opens her eyes at night and “ savors, with astonishment, . . . the brand new curtains. . . instead of the apricot-pink. . . where she slept as a little girl”( Colette 55). The thrill of her new surroundings is an important setup for the rest of the story because it reveals to the reader how fresh this relationship is and the innocent ignorance between them.
A well-written text is one that explores and analyses enduring values pertinent to the foundation of humanity. These texts reveal what it means to be human and how it influences one’s way of life. This is conspicuous in William Shakespeare’s tragic play, ‘Othello’ and Jocelyn Moorehouse’ film, ‘The Dressmaker’. Both texts remain significant because of their relationship with timeless values. Fabricating the responder’s awareness to the complex nature of social values, distinctly those pertaining appearance versus reality and gender. As such the concepts make close reference to values that remain significant to the core of humanity.
Varying Issues Corresponding to the School Dress Code Shelby A. Scholle Newbury Park High School Abstract Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions. Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality causing students to conform, sexist ideas in the form of punishment and how forms of clothing causes a distraction, and influencing rape culture. Costs for an advanced educational environment, positive, and negative effects will be explored within this paper to determine whether or not the dress code is necessary for an advanced learning environment or limiting the student's ability to express themselves.

Most everyone has heard of the ongoing debate of whether “the dress” is white and gold or blue and black; however, not everyone may be aware of the ongoing issue surrounding domestic abuse. On March 6, 2015, the South African branch of the Salvation Army decided to use the ongoing debate to bring light to the real “black and blue” people should worry about. They posted on Twitter a beaten model wearing the gold and white dress with a caption of “Why is it so hard to see black and blue” (Salvation Army). The Salvation Army, known for their work with aiding those in need, believes that gaining awareness for domestic abuse and human trafficking is key to stopping these problems. Through their insightful use of a popular culture hot topic, the
The excitement is building up inside of me, just like Eudora Welty feels when she reads, as described in a passage from One Writer’s Beginnings. I know exactly what I am looking for; two purses for my mother and sister. Nothing to big, or to small. One is going to be black, one brown. Try as I might to keep my mind on the task at hand, it is difficult to concentrate on just purses when there are fascinating items all around me! Leather jackets, jewelry, bolt upon bolt of the most gorgeous fabrics I have ever seen, and so much more. I can’t help but walk over to the people when they call to me; I am drawn by their eagerness and obvious love for their product. They have to be really great scarves if the man holding them thinks so much of them,...
The ballroom at the Yacht Club was decorated with deep red roses and black ribbons, the perfect combination of colors for a winter wedding. Long, tall windows covered the walls to let all the guests experience the view of the nearby ocean. Each round table was decorated with a long black underskirt cloth, a shorter bright white tablecloth, with each placemat arranged around a beautiful vase full of red roses. The wooden dance floor, full of chairs for the ceremony, took up half of the room, while the other half was occupied with 15 round tables and one rectangular Head Table. As the guests walked up the stairs to our ballroom, they would see a guest book that was decorated with pictures and captions and ready for their signatures.
We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general. Dress codes ultimately disrupt the pursuit of knowledge for the students, encourage gender bias, and can be dangerous. If we want the younger generations to succeed in the education system, we should utilize school uniforms. Uniforms in schools from elementary to high schools, will promote gender equality and facilitate student safety.
Alyssa Norden Princess Storrer AP Composition 20 May 2014 Dress Codes: More Than Just Clothing Regulations Schools all over the world have created and enforced dress codes. Some schools are more relaxed than others; however, they all share the common theme of regulating what students can and cannot wear during the school day. But what happens when the latest fashion trends completely compromise the implemented dress code? That is the problem student’s-particularly young women- are facing in today’s society. The overwhelming increase in dress code violations has brought to light another issue associated with the codes: sexism.
