Most everyone has heard of the ongoing debate of whether “the dress” is white and gold or blue and black; however, not everyone may be aware of the ongoing issue surrounding domestic abuse. On March 6, 2015, the South African branch of the Salvation Army decided to use the ongoing debate to bring light to the real “black and blue” people should worry about. They posted on Twitter a beaten model wearing the gold and white dress with a caption of “Why is it so hard to see black and blue” (Salvation Army). The Salvation Army, known for their work with aiding those in need, believes that gaining awareness for domestic abuse and human trafficking is key to stopping these problems. Through their insightful use of a popular culture hot topic, the …show more content…
The author, the Salvation Army, made it seem that it is so simple to understand that we, as a society and culture, should focus on is the crimes of abuse. The author includes a phone number for people who need help, or can help, can call. The Salvation Army follows their creed of “heart to God, hand to man” (Salvation Army) by being a resource for those in need. The role that the Salvation Army plays in their work, according to the article “South African Salvation Army Advertising Campaign Becomes Worldwide Phenomenon”, is to provide programs that “help [the victims] to recover from their abusers and leave as independent, confident women” (Salvation Army). There is no other opinion on this ad, since that would be counterintuitive to the support of abused women. The logic they present is sound because no one would outright praise someone for abusing …show more content…
The model of this ad is wearing the disputed white and gold (or black and blue) dress and has bruises on her face, wrist, and legs. The dress itself is a way for the audience to connect an image to a larger meaning. The author responds to the fact that people are obsessing of the color of the dress, when there are more relevant topics the media should be concerned with, such as domestic abuse. Furthermore, surrounded by a grey background, the model and her injuries are front and center, much like how the idea of helping the abused should be. With the background being nondescript, the large, white text is also pronounced, making it easier to understand what the image is supposed to be
The Salvation Army prides itself in continuously offering needs based programs or service to communities that fall below the poverty line. The Salvation Army has a wide array of strengths including: 1) Professional networking; a channel through which ideas, resources and services can be exchanged between Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations 2) Global notoriety; the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization, sustained primarily through government funds and public donations 3) Longevity; a demonstrated history of success. This history of longevity affords them a positive, solid reputation in participating communities (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
Domestic violence advertisements regularly appear in today’s media. The topic is a live issue in the world, causing various messages to be produced. Advertisements can evoke multiple responses: Emotional, thought provoking, or ethical reactions. Advertisers use rhetorical appeals to capture its audiences’ attention. Three rhetorical appeals commonly used are Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. In a photo shopped CoverGirl ad, an argument is presented concerning CoverGirl’s continuation to be the beauty sponsor of the NFL. The only change in the new ad is the model’s makeup design. Now the model looks to have been hit. This is directed towards the NFL’s controversy about Ray Rice and other football players having committed domestic violence. Each of the
The Salvation Army is an advocate for fighting against human trafficking that are for sexual and labor purposes. The founders are Catherine and William Booth who founded this church organization in 1865 in London, England. I believe they relate to the United States as a hegemony because the Booths were different than other churches. They took their ministry to London's east side streets which were very dangerous. The United States helps other countries to succeed by risking their own lives or the safety of the country to help. The Booths efforts started a mission for the rest of the generations in this organization which includes protecting women and children from sex trafficking. The Salvation Army's efforts did not stop there. Right now
The Salvation Army uses the Aristotelian appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos to convince the audience that donating to their company will provide hope to underprivileged people around the world. Utilizing the image of distressed children for provides the use of pathos, logical facts for logos, and their company’s creditability for ethos. Affecting the advertisement the most dramatically, is the idea that donating to the Salvation Army is a way to give hope to individuals who are affected from natural disasters. Visually, a young boy is holding another young boy, who is most likely, his brother in his arms. Covered in dirt and cuts, the boys are also wearing tattered and ripped clothing. In addition the boys have no shoes, showing their damaged dirty feet. A bottle on the side near the boys has dirty water in it, displaying the idea of no clean drinking water. Correspondently, the children are sleeping on dirty stairs showing they are homeless with no food, clean water, and no clean clothing. On the bottom right corner of the ad there is the Salvation Army logo. Near the bottom there is the contact information to donate and learn more about the charity. Similarity, there is also a small memo describing what the donation provides to individuals in natural disasters and what they will receive from the Salvation Army. For example, it provides emotional support and helps the injured and heartbroken people. In bold font “Giving Hope Today”, is written on the advertisement, providing the idea that donation to the Salvation Army is more than just providing necessary support and needs to individuals affected by natural disasters, but it provides hope and a future.
Spirituality affirms the essential self-worth, dignity and core health of a person’s well being; therefore, homeless shelters should incorporate spirituality, in order to benefit a person in the long term compared to the satisfaction of an immediate need. “Our national epidemic of intolerance for poor and homeless people is the consequence of America’s lack of spirituality, coupled with America’s love of materialism and society’s expense (3, martin).”
served 152 people and had 6 volunteers. The Salvation Army survives greatly because of their volunteers and help from the community. The volunteers come on their lunch breaks and other spare time to help. Everyone still gets served even with the huge number difference.
Homelessness is not something that I could ever imagine completely. I, like everyone else, have a simple idea of what it would be like to be homeless. There is so much more to being homeless than most believe. My exposure to Habitat for Humanity is showing me some about the idea of living in a lower income family. This exposure is an experience that all high school and college students should have.
Analysis of the Work of Christian Aid The agency I have chosen to analyse and explain about for my chosen religious agency is ‘Christian Aid.’ I have chosen them, because I believe overall that they do the correct thing to help the needy. Christian aid is an agency of the churches in the UK and Ireland; Christian Aid works wherever the need is greatest, irrespective of religion. Christian Aid supports local organisations, which are best, placed to understand local needs, as well as giving help on the ground through 16 overseas offices.
The Salvation Army is a Christian church and international charitable organization. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in the East End of London, by William Booth (Salvation, n.d). Booth was an evangelist who wanted to offer practical help to the poor and as well as preaching the Gospel to them. However, it originally was called the Christian Mission, but Booth had changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878 (TheSalvation, n.d). In addition, “Is a protestant denomination of the Christian Church with over 1.6 million members in 109 countries” (BBC, n.d). The Salvation Army is “famous for its work with people who have fallen on hard times: it offers help to the elderly, the young, offenders, drug addicts and blind and disabled people;
The Salvation Army was established in London's East End in 1865 by William Booth and his wife Catherine. Initially, Booth named the association the East London Christian Mission. The name The Salvation Army developed from an occurrence on May 19 and 20. William Booth was writing a letter to his secretary George Scott Railton and said, "We are a volunteer army. " Bramwell Booth heard his dad and said, "Volunteer!
Without women’s shelters, millions of abused women would not have a “way out” of the danger they face each and every day. Based on the statistics, survival stories that are typical of victims helped at a shelter, and the beneficial resources provided at shelters, it is obvious that women’s shelters are very effective and necessary. It is crucial that these shelters receive adequate funding in order to give victims of domestic violence a hope for a better future.
The advert is for a new product called ‘WOMAN’ that they are adding to their line of fragrances. The first thing that is noticed about this advert is the colour. It is very contrasting with the black and white, and gives a big impact to the audience. The white usually signifies innocence but with the black background it’s suggesting hidden depths, like a wild side that you could have. The model’s look is very confident, like she can get
This was the first idea that came to mind when the qualifications of the research paper were given to us. It is a problem I have faced since being in the ministry field; as well as a common topic in many classes, lectures, and other places of discussions. “How do I convince people to volunteer for my programs?” This has been, currently is, and will likely be a problem faced by any places who are in need of more work force than they can hire, especially churches. Though many people are willing to claim they are Christian and are proud of the church they attend, few people want to commit to volunteer at their church, and if they do it is often not for long.
The visuals of the two women is the most overwhelming feature of the advertisement that beholds to some an explicit racial implication, which may force readers into interpreting the advertisement as predominantly racist rather than promotional. Although Sony’s aim was to promote this product, the visual of the white woman strangling the black woman may cause audiences to interpret the ad as a racial superiority statement rather than a mere ad campaign. The difference in size between the product (bottom lefthand side) and the visual of the two women calls for more attention to the image of the two women, which depicts a dominance of white over black. A Japanese audience where due to the homogenous aspect of society, the introduction of a new color such as white is special as it is something new and distinct compared to what was then previously available. On the other hand, an American audience will be discomforted by the way in wh...
Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
