AB140-Unit 8 Assignment Name December 6, 2014 Owning a business comes with many responsibilities, along with abiding by and staying current on numerous health codes and laws. One of the most important would probably be keeping your integrity. Dalman, owner of Sandwich Blitz, Inc., faces a dilemma. All his locations are quite small but there are new health codes requiring trash dumpsters to be a certain length away from his stores’ rear entrances and also land-use laws that require them to be a certain length from the property line. At one of his locations, a government inspector informed one of Dalman’s location managers the dumpster is a foot off of abiding by both these laws, however, he is willing to overlook it if Sandwich Blitz provides food for a work party of his. The manager relayed this information to Dalman so what would be the right thing for Dalman to do? The eight steps toward integrity is something that all corporations and businesses should strive to excel at. These eight steps include; doing what we say we will do, doing the right thing, taking responsibility, supporting our own weight, holistic thinking, respecting others, checking the mirror, defining the rules and values. Sandwich Blitz as an organization that is trying to grow and expand should definitely work towards the goal of keeping integrity as a priority. In the example case, I think there are a few of the steps that could fit this Sandwich Blitz situation. The obvious answer to most people would be to do the right thing.
With awareness of what’s right comes the obligation of the right action. That’s mean embodying our convictions- and accepting the consequences. (Sherman, 2003) The right thing for Salman to do is not to accept the government inspector’s proposal or should I say bribe and to find another way to legally adhere to the codes and laws. Integrity must remain constant no matter what the circumstances to gain respect of the employees and community as a whole. At its core, integrity begins with the company’s leader who understands the qualities of integrity which filters down throughout the company into every department and every member’s approach and attitude. 2004) It may be tempting (and a lot easier) to Dalman to take the inspector’s bribe and to be done with it. Right now it would be less stressful and probably less expensive to just accept and be done with it. But taking the easy way out and discounting his integrity will catch up to him in the long run and potentially harm his business he worked so hard to build. Who is to say that that inspector will not rat him out? Or maybe get investigated for taking bribes. If we surround ourselves with people who are dishonest and willing to cut corners to get ahead, then we’ll surely find ourselves following a pattern of first enduring their behavior, then accepting their behavior and finally adopting their behavior. If you want to build a reputation as a person of integrity then surround yourself with people of integrity. (Anderson 2012) Tom Peters has said, “There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity.” If Dalman allows this petty bribe to happen he might be tempted to take more shortcuts thus harming his success and business. The ethical code of an organization illustrates the importance of being honest, acting with integrity, and showing fairness in decision making (Bethel, 2015). Ultimately, “laws regulating business conduct are passed because some stakeholders believe they cannot be trusted to do what is right” (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015, p. 95). In the last couple of years, culture has become the initiator for compliance, which means from the top down there has to be a commitment to act in a way that represents the company’s core values (Verschoor, 2015).
Integrity: Do what’s right legally and morally. Leaders with integrity consistently act according to principles. (Not for just what’s in the moment). Great leaders with integrity make their principles known and consistently act in accordance with them. Leaders who have integrity mean they both are morally complete and true to yourself. Integrity is the quality of being honest and fair (“integrity,” n.d.). Integrity involves displaying high standards of ethical conduct and behaviors consistent with agency and governmental standards. Jordan has ensured throughout his time as an H.R. professional that he is remaining ethical at all times. “I have to ensure that I am aware of all policies and regulations that can affect our employees. But I also have to keep their information confidential.” Confidentiality is very important for H.R. professionals as they need to ensure that they handle confidential information appropriately, and never divulge any information to unauthorized persons. They also must serve the needs of top management and monitor their actions towards employees to be sure that all policies and regulations are followed.
Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.
In public, integrity plays a very important role since people who have integrity hold firmly to their views, which support them to act properly in academic, personal and professional circumstances. In the academic community, students of integrity will notice academic standards severely, exchange ideas freely and improve the social acknowledgment of the value of their institutions. In personal conditions, integrity leads individuals to understand who they really are, thus they can be honest to their benefits and ideal life. In the workplace, truth enhances personal commitment to the code of ethics set forth by the profession. Additionally, integrity begins mutual beneficial personal relationships in a community, helps people develop a sense of reliability and responsibility, and fosters their professional competencies. In a word, the more people have integrity in a community, the more efficiency and efficiency we can have, and the more happiness and trust we can enjoy.

The sandwich generation is such a period on almost every human being that makes him a very busy and burdened person. The term means that the individual when reaching his 40s, he has not carried the responsibility of his parents those are growing old. Honesty in conduct is the foundation of every successful business organization. The substratum of any organization depends upon the level of morality followed by the elements that run that organization. Honest conduct requires us to practice and preach those ideologies that will further strengthen the level of trust people place upon us. Honesty in its narrowest form is the act of telling the truth, but honesty in conduct is much more than that. Honest conduct requires earnestness, no act of misleading, deviousness or betrayal. What’s most important is the loyalty to the organization and the act of good faith.
