I gave myself a score of 4, proficient, for the professional attribute of respect. I am considerate of others, I value diversity, and I demonstrate inclusive attitudes and behaviors. During my classes, I am respectful to my professors by paying attention to the material and what they are saying. I do not talk with others nor put my attention on my phone or computer. When it is time for group work in my classes, I am inclusive of everyone and I fully listen to what they say. I understand that other people may think and process information differently than I do therefore I show respect by listening to them and trying to understand content from their points of view. Many individuals, teachers or not, only do what they are asked or expected to do. However, going above and beyond and being able to have greater influence on a child’s life is my goal. I am involved in several clubs, such as Spanish club and HOSA, although I do not hold office in any of them, I try to serve as a leader and to use my intelligence to help the school. As a college student, I often find myself inundated with work. To make it worse, these assignments usually are uninteresting and irrelevant. It is in the midst of these tedious exercises that I begin to wonder whether all of this work is worth it. When this issue creeps into my mind, I think back to my reasons for choosing to pursue this profession. When I started college, I knew that I could not function in a typical nine to five job. The banality and predictability of such a career simply did not appeal to me. So that essentially ruled out any course of study which would lead to such an occupation. I also knew that I wanted a job that would allow me to make a difference in people’s lives. My mind carefully contemplated the list of possible vocations, and ultimately the field of education seemed to possess the strongest appeal. A teaching career, I figured, would allow me to have a strong impact on the lives of young people. I wanted to help them grow both as students and as people, just as my teachers had done for me. So, despite the warnings of many current teachers, I enlisted myself in a curriculum devoted to teacher preparation.
I demonstrated professionalism throughout this whole year. Taking a full load of my masters and being a first year teacher was a challenge. I learned very quickly the things I could and could not do. I kept to myself a lot because I was always listening. I was learning at school and at work. I learned never to use a child’s name especially when you’re out in public. I learned to be very prepared during any meetings with administrators or parents. I made sure I had correct forms on file to protect myself. I always showed respect to my parents, students, administrators, and fellow teachers. I was not afraid to ask for help when I needed it. I always kept an open form of communication between me and my principle.

Every teacher has this potential whether they are aware of it or not. I have been a teacher for nine years in early childhood education and within those nine years I have become very aware of how powerful the smallest act of caring can turn a person’s life around or even just make someone’s day a little better. Being a preschool teacher has brought me great pleasure to my life simply brightening a child’s day and knowing that I am making a difference in their life. Through my journey as a teacher I have thought about how I can advance in my career field and still be active with children on a daily basis and continue making a difference in each child’s life as well as their parents. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew that in my future I wanted to become a teacher. I always looked up to my teachers, especially the ones I had in elementary school. I even played 'school' with my friends and pretended I had my own classroom. I loved being in charge. During a summer, I was given the opportunity to work as an Energy Express mentor and work with a group of eight children. This was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever been through. I was a mentor to help guide the children, and by the end of the summer I felt as if I had really accomplished something. I am planning to pursue a career in elementary education. I love children, and just knowing that as a teacher I could make a difference in someone's life means so much to me.

I chose education as my career path after working in a classroom to fulfill a Field Study course. The children had a powerful impact; they were amazing; challenging, and most of all loving. In helping them, I quickly realized that I was the one receiving the gift that ultimately inspired me down the path of serving disadvantaged children. After experiencing two semesters in classrooms, I realized my enthusiasm for teaching was not a mere in-the-moment feeling but rather a genuine enthusiasm. I became aware that teachers are an important foundation in society and I look forward to the opportunity to develop the skills children need to adapt and apply for the rest of their lives by encouraging knowledge, character and resilience.
My decision to pursue a career in teaching is due, in part to my desire to make an impact on the kids that I teach. Teaching is a very rewarding profession in which the teacher is directly able to affect a child’s life. During this stage of my college career, I have reached the realization the becoming a teacher is not too far from my grasp. There have been many influences on my life that have led me to this point and that helped me to establish goals for my career. I am a hard-working, confident and conscientious and have a keen desire to be a primary school teacher.
