Breath after breath, stride after stride, running can act as a release. Although there are so many benefits, the popular attitude towards running seems to be negative. Being a college student, I understand that getting out of your dorm and running instead of taking a nap can be undesirable, but after hearing all the benefits you may want to reconsider your opinion. I am a runner, but not your typical track star. I can relate to thinking that running is only for people who are good at it but I am here to tell you that’s a myth. It doesn’t matter what your reason is for running, but what does matter is following your own purpose. Running is beneficial for everyone because it’s natural, inspirational, and improves brain function.
The main reason I began running is to achieve a sense of accomplishment and inspire me to take on more challenges. Through small goals, running can teach you that you can complete anything through hard work and dedication. As Jacquie Cattanach of active.com says, “By setting and achieving goals, you can help give yourself a greater sense of empowerment” (Cattanach). Empowerment is really important in todays world because of the competitive nature of society. You have to believe in yourself to take on challenges and the gained confidence in achieving your running goals will help you achieve your dreams. Running can improve your mood, make you more productive, and decrease anxiety. All cardiovascular exercise releases endorphins, making you happier. As active.com states “there are few things in the world that can better or more rapidly treat depression than exercise such as running.”(Rushlow)Exercise can also make you more productive, and as all college students know, procrastination is real. Subjects in a British study report that they “made fewer mistakes, concentrated better, and were more productive on the day they were active.”(Rushlow) Even though students claim they don’t have time, they usually spend this extra time surfing facebook or twitter while they were supposed to be studying. Running can also reduce anxiety and stress, which contributes to an overall happier you. According to the American Psychological Association, people who exercise regularly are less like likely to panic in stressful situations then people who don’t exercise regularly (Weir).
