Breath after breath, stride after stride, running can act as a release. Although there are so many benefits, the popular attitude towards running seems to be negative. Being a college student, I understand that getting out of your dorm and running instead of taking a nap can be undesirable, but after hearing all the benefits you may want to reconsider your opinion. I am a runner, but not your typical track star. I can relate to thinking that running is only for people who are good at it but I am here to tell you that’s a myth. The main reason I began running is to achieve a sense of accomplishment and inspire me to take on more challenges. Through small goals, running can teach you that you can complete anything through hard work and dedication. Empowerment is really important in todays world because of the competitive nature of society. The last time I did not run for consecutive days, was during Middle School. Running has been a very powerful tool for me, and the joy it brings is something I carry. As a person who has an unhealthy amount of anxiety in my life, running has been an outlet for me. Whenever I feel anxious or stressed out, I run. There are two ways running brings me relief; the first is it is an immediate distraction from whatever is bothering me. In addition, running also gives me a “runner's high” after I run. While this may seem unimaginable, it is actually very real because the pleasure of finishing a workout has few parallels. After I run, for the rest of the day, my mood is elevated.
Whether or not this "runner's high" physically exists is a topic of heated debate in the scientific community. Scientists have seen many instances in which exercise has benefited the mental health of people. For one thing, physical activity can greatly improve one's self-esteem. Studies conducted on both children and clinically depressed patients show marked improvement in self-esteem, following aerobic and anaerobic exercise training. (Biddle and Mutrie 1991) Exercise does this because it creates a situation in which the participant learns to master a task, thus achieving a feeling of control over their life. Thus, exercise helps to do undo depression, which according to the "learned helplessness" theory of depression, is caused by recurring instances in which patients have no sense of control over the outcome.
I signed up to run track in the spring and went to summer conditioning for cross country. That’s when my coaches, teammates, and myself noticed that my running has improved significantly from when I first started. I knew that I had to work hard my senior year to achieve my goals for running. Running is a mental sport. The workouts I had to do were brutally painful and I had stay positive throughout the run because I know the training I had to do will help me during a race.
A sprinter runs for the finish line, a basketball player dashes toward the hoop, a baseball player sprints for home plate, and a soccer player dashes toward the goal. All of these sports have one thing in common: the players are all running towards a goal. Everyone is running at one point or another in his or her lifetime. Majority of research indicates that replacing some academic periods with physical education results in higher academic achievement for students and improved concentration and focus. Exercise is shown to increase circulation and blood flow to the brain which increases cognitive function and the efficiency of the brain, having a profound impact on the human body and its ability to function efficiently. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.

“Why do you run?” It’s a question that I’ve asked many of the high school runners I’ve personally coached as well as many of the young runners I’ve met over the past few years while working at running camps in New England. While I’ve received an unbelievable number of varying answers to it, I’ve also received a few blank stares which translate into some form of the response, “huh?” But, the vast majority of the replies all seemed to be related to how they became interested in running in the first place and more importantly, what they have derived from the sport.
