A sprinter runs for the finish line, a basketball player dashes toward the hoop, a baseball player sprints for home plate, and a soccer player dashes toward the goal. All of these sports have one thing in common: the players are all running towards a goal. Everyone is running at one point or another in his or her lifetime. Whether someone is running toward a specific dream or away from a horrific nightmare, running is a part of life. Profuse amounts effort must be put in the run to get to the finish line. Common dictionary definitions for the word run are “to go rapidly or hurriedly” from Merriam-Webster.com and “to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk…” from dictionary.com. The word run is often associated with how an object may run. “To keep operating or going, as a machine” (Dictionary). This definition often reminds society of how they run their busy lifestyles. Some people have to arise and keep running every day in order to support their family. This is just a part of everyday life. Workers seem to break down every once in a while, too, just like machines. If an employee becomes sick or injured, then he or she must rest until repaired. To be able to run is an important aspect to any person’s life. Nothing would ever be done if humans did not run. The population would just sit around like bums, not supporting families or taking care of themselves. Minds, like bodies, work like the inside of a clock. People have to think before they act. Motivation is a great example of how a running mind can inspire many to take charge and make goals in their own life. Motivation to keep a life running is substantial. This motivation helps people reach their lifestyle goals. These goals may be actually running a mile in a certain amount of time, getting a job, or simply losing those extra two pounds. In the world of high school running, there are two types of runners: cross country runners and track runners. I am both, as I have been in cross country since seventh grade and track since first grade. The last time I did not run for consecutive days, was during Middle School. Running has been a very powerful tool for me, and the joy it brings is something I carry. As a person who has an unhealthy amount of anxiety in my life, running has been an outlet for me. Whenever I feel anxious or stressed out, I run. There are two ways running brings me relief; the first is it is an immediate distraction from whatever is bothering me. In addition, running also gives me a “runner's high” after I run. This movie puts together quite a few sport psychology qualities such as motivation, determination, leadership, imagery and goal setting. The movie showcases how an underdog Jamaican team who lives in a constant summer can compete in a winter sport due to the fact that they never gave up and used every resource they had available to them including sport physiology. Throughout this summer I will talk about the certain aspects of sport psychology and how the movie sheds light on them. At one meet Missy did not do so well because she had to fully put her mind on the race. “I was taught to do my best, to give it my all. To be my best, to be my all” (Franklin 104). Her coach gave her all the keys she needed to race well, but if Missy does not fully put her mind on the race, the keys can not open doors of success. Being her best could get her far, she just had to learn how to be successful with it. The psychology of sport has been a rising topic in the field of psychology during the last few years. One of the main reasons is due to the specific interest of goal setting amongst athletes. In class we discussed how people must set goals that are both difficult and specific. One must perceive their goal as one that is difficult enough to energize them and keep their focus, versus one that is too easy that requires no true effort. The goal must also be specific in its approach. The clarity that specific goals provide allow the individual to track their progress unlike vague goals. His childhood was hard and lonely and he was convinced no one loved him. Nicky felt alone in the world at a young age and this made a deep hatred begin to grow inside him.
In my narrative paper, I wrote in detail about my last track season of my high school career. In this essay I discussed the process of practicing and working towards achieving my goals at the end of the season. I talked about my relationship with my coach and how important it was to me, as well as my determination and perseverance during the track season. I also discussed how I finally achieved my goal of breaking twelve minutes in the 3200 meter run and how much it meant to me as a runner. Writing this essay about my personal experience with running sparked my interest in learning all of the health benefits that come with running on a regular basis. In conducting my research, I found that running is not only a great way to maintain a healthy weight, but it is also great for your heart, mind and mood, bones and joints, and other body systems.
Due to all of this, life as a run is far more enjoyable than life as a race. Life as a run allows oneself to have freedom in what they do and actual thought behind what they do, rather than being some race horse that is bred to do nothing but win and cannot think for itself. Trigger words in society today could be vulgar, lewd, obscene, suggestive or plain out and right indecent. Some of these words you hear every day one example is the word, bitch. It’s ok to say bitch when referring to reference of a female dog. Or complaining as in to whine constantly about an issue. Or too say bitchn used to describe something cool back in the day.
People are too overwhelmed to think that it would benefit them. Even taking a jog would require too much of an effort. Because of society’s obligations, the worries of an average everyday routine bring them devastation. It becomes difficult to try to find time within their schedules to squeeze in a time to run. Adding exercise on their to-do list would result in more pressure while trying to reduce stress is the last priority on their mind. However, if they were able to manage their time and duties, making time to get involved in a cardio workout would not be a problem. They would be able to experience the true benefits of exercise and see how it could translate into reducing stress in their lives.
We finish what we start. This was the motto that kept me going during the strenuous training period for a marathon. But prior to that, I must confess, I wasn’t an athlete. I was never interested in playing sports, except for recreational badminton. During gym class, I would walk three quarters of the time when it time for the dreaded mile run. I preferred staying indoors and sitting on the couch and watch movies. The first time I had heard about a marathon training program, called Dreamfar, in my school, I thought to myself, what kind of crazy person would want to run a marathon? Never did I realize, eight months later, I would be that crazy person.
As a teenager, I have always enjoyed the peacefulness of walking and running track. I was never the fastest sprinter; yet, I qualified in a few Cross-Country Canada races. Today, I still choose to walk to and from school, though I did stop running. What did running provide for myself? Why was this insufficient?
