The New York Road Runners is a non-profit organization based in New York City. It was originally founded in 1958 in Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx as a running club with about 40 members who were led by African American Olympian Ted Corbitt. This new club opened its ranks to all: men, women, Whites, Blacks, fast and slow. Growth was a gradual process, by 1970 there were about 250 members and that was the first year of the New York City
Marathon in Central Park. As time would pass the NYRR would increase in members and always spread its mission statement among new and old members alike. The mission is to help and inspire people through running, as it states on their website at nyrr.org “Running takes your body, mind, and spirit to a better place. The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward can make you healthier, happier, and more confident. Like the starting horn at a race, we want to be the “Go!” that gets people running for life. At New York Road Runners, it is our goal to give everyone on the planet both a reason to run and the means and opportunity to keep running and never stop.” This mission statement is to motivate past and future runners in the city of New York.
In the 1972 marathon co-founder Fred Lebow took over as the president of the NYRR, and helped start a “running boom’ that swept the nation during this time. In 1976 The New York
City marathon extended to all five boroughs of New York. They also launched many new races for its members during the decade of the 70’s, including the first ever all woman race named the

...Finally, the events of 9/11 did affect the organization as it did all of New York, but with the New York spirit it possesses they ran the NYC marathon almost two months afterwards and helped heal this city and provided help for those in need.
The NYRR is a great example of how to use someone’s personal passion and turn it into a great organization that helps many and motivates everyone. They give me the motivation to run and I am a supporter of this group because of what they stand for and how well they are run.
The “Run for life” motto was created in the early 2010’s and it symbolizes what the NYRR stands for. The NYRR brings life to active running New Yorkers and also brings new life to youth programs, community health events and many more. This organization will prosper for a long time and so will most of the city of New York.

Sweet Sweet Runner, a 2010 short video by Rashid Johnson begins with the image of a middle-aged, bespectacled black man. The viewer is given momentary flashes, accompanied by the sound of sirens, that quickly defines what he is wearing (a fresh red jacket and running pants), the type of environment he is in, as well as his expression as he looks out onto the city streets (fig 1). The video then flashes back in time, showing him emerging from behind the glass of a door of a New York City apartment building. We are voyeurs, watching him from behind a tree, and later, a windowpane across the street. After a brief warm up period where he raises and drops his shoulders, rotates his neck, and swings a few punches into the cold air, he bends down, touches his toes and takes off running. The video alternates between shots of New York architecture, our runner, and various activities taking place in the streets. We hear the wail of an ambulance and then see it race by. A pair walks an excited dog, and another duo zips by on expensive bicycles clad in body-hugging racing gear. It quickly becomes clear that it is a cold morning in an affluent Manhattan neighborhood.
They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares" (603). This quotation shows that running is not always competition, but it helps runners overcome their

I am very honored to have been part of this organization for the 2013-2014 school year and I plan to participate next year as well. At the end of the event I always feel so inspired and ready to make even more a difference in the lives of others, whether through volunteering, my future profession, or other organization at the University of Northern Iowa. I have learned so much from the Miracle Kiddos and their families, and plan to carry those life lessons with me as I pursue a career in the exercise/health science field.
The Barkley Marathons are run in the Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area near Oak Ridge in Tennessee. The park is bordered by two prisons and a coal mine and is thirty five minutes away from closest the city. The course consists of a twenty mile loop, which for the most part traces the border of the park. The actual length of the course is an issue of large debate however. The twenty mile figure was derived by the race director from a topographic map. Most that have run the loop feel that it is longer, since the distance associated with elevation change and winding trails isn't taken into account. Some feel that the loop could be as long as twenty six miles. At the other end of the argument is the distance that was derived from a survey crew in who measured the park to make a new map in 1993. The distances they got for many portions of the course were actually shorter than Gary Cantrell had listed them to be. On any account the distance assumes that the runner does not get lost, which is a rarity at the Barkley.
The Seagate Ultras on November 26, 1994, included races of 60 km, 50 miles, and 100 km, each run on the same 1.1 mile loop. There were approximately 10, 10, and 6 runners, respectively, in these races, which were judged separately. My 9:29 time for 100 km was not very fast, but it won that race easily, and I also went through 60 km and 50 miles faster than anyone in those races. So I am not a novice.
Between 1965 and 1970 African American gangs united and became a political force against racism. Several major organizations were created to promote unity amongst the black community and keep track of social injustice against them, primarily police brutality. The Black Panther Party (BPP) opened a chapter in Los Angeles, just after they began in Oakland in 1966. A former member of the Slausons, Ron Wilkins, created the Community Action Patrol (CA...
The $160.00 entry fee that is required to run in "The Race Across the Sky" is money well spent. Not only do individuals get to run in one of the most beautiful states in the country, but they get to experience the friendly atmosphere of Colorado. The locals from Leadville volunteer to work at the aid stations which line the course, and there is truly a spirit for running. It is not only a challenging and competitive race, but a guaranteed good time. Throughout the 30 hour race which begins at 4:00 A.M. and ends at 10:00 A.M. the following day, there are fans and volunteers to make the experience more enjoyable. There is definitely a "personal" feeling which the Leadville 100 brings to running.
In its long and illustrious history, New York City (NYC) has gone through tremendous change. From a small trading post on the tip of Manhattan Island, to the greatest metropolis in the world, NYC has continued to evolve over time. One period in particular that had more degrees of change than many others, was 1860 to 1865. The lives of the residents of the great port city would be completely changed forever.

“Two thousand years after the victory of the Athenians over the Persians, writers continued to call upon the name of Marathon to symbolize humanity’s struggle for freedom. The nineteenth-century English poet Lord Byron, who fought for Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire, penned the following verse:”
We finish what we start. This was the motto that kept me going during the strenuous training period for a marathon. But prior to that, I must confess, I wasn’t an athlete. I was never interested in playing sports, except for recreational badminton. During gym class, I would walk three quarters of the time when it time for the dreaded mile run. I preferred staying indoors and sitting on the couch and watch movies. The first time I had heard about a marathon training program, called Dreamfar, in my school, I thought to myself, what kind of crazy person would want to run a marathon? Never did I realize, eight months later, I would be that crazy person.
