Dear Parents/Guardians:

This week the freshmen are starting the research part of the research paper over William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”. Since this is a long, important endeavor, I believe parents should be aware of what the research unit entails. This paper will also be considered their final for the second semester, as this encompasses researching, writing and content knowledge. Based on the students’ reading and understanding of the play, they have chosen a topic related to the play and developed it into a thesis statement. We will cover all aspects of the research process; therefore, students will prepare and study the following: avoiding plagiarism, choosing a topic, writing an effective thesis statement, forming an outline, distinguishing between primary and secondary sources, preparing electronic source/bibliography notes, understanding how to use internal …show more content…

The students have a list of books to choose from, as well as a designated websites to peruse notable internet research. The books the students use are from a closed stack, and all students doing this project will be using the same books. That is why we have enforced a special fine of 50 cents per period, or $4.00 a day, if the book is not returned. This fine will be enforced even if the student does not make it to school when the book is due. If you would be able to drop the book off on the way to work, or a sibling or friend can bring it into the main office that would be acceptable. Because we only have so many books to use, many students share books, and in order to utilize the time they have in class, they need to work with these books. Students with outstanding fines cannot use the library during school hours, and we will be spending an extensive amount of time there, so students need to be responsible for bringing the books back and/or paying the
