Even though, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet over 500 years ago the struggles and social pressures portrayed in the play are still present in the cutthroat society of high school. Two perfect themes that are shown tremendously throughout Shakespeare’s time and our modern times are; “Love” and “Fate”. These are constantly running through people’s minds all day as they try to unravel them. No matter the time period there will always be similarities especially between the teenager years.
In High School people scavenge to find love or to even fake their love all for an image they desire to have. In Shakespeare’s times people normally married for riches and social status even if they did not love them. When we first meet Juliet Capulet she is

very unique in which she is not like the average girl. “ Marry, that ‘marry’ is the very them I came to talk of. Tell me, daughter Juliet, How stands your disposition to be married?” (Act 1, SC.3, Lines, 67-69). “ It is an Honour that I dream not of.” (Act 1, Sc. 3, Line 70). Many girls in the past and present have thought about marriage and/or falling in love many times. In our day if a mom went to their fourteen year old daughter and told her a boy wants to marry her; there is no doubt that her response would be the totally opposite of what a girl in Shakespeare’s time would do. But, if a best friend came to the same girl and told her a cute boy liked her she would be jumping off the walls in excitement just like someone in Shakespeare’s time would do. In the modern teenager years girls do not have a desire to be married but they urge to be in love and sometimes they want it so bad their willing to fake it all. Fate is everywhere it is shown in stories and in real life in both modern and olden times.
While fate seemed to keep Romeo apart from Juliet it appeared to be on Paris’ side in becoming Juliet’s wife. Fate caused Romeo to see Juliet across the ballroom making him fall madly in love with her. On the first day of high school a girl could walk into her class and see a beautiful boy sitting across the room and she might think to herself “Did fate bring us together” as dramatic as that sounds this happens to both boys and girls. This is exactly what Romeo did he saw a beautiful girl and then he planned to marry her even though he just met her. Paris was very lucky after Tybalt death that Lord and Lady Capulet were all for Paris marrying Juliet. Paris was very persistent into having Juliet as his wife he says “These times of woe afford no time to woo.” (Act 3, SC. 4, Line 9). In High School when a boy gets their crushes’ parents to like them they get this big relief just as Paris did they know that the parents are on their side. When your parents approve of the person you like that is always a good sign. In relationship fate can bring two opposite personalities together and somehow it can all work out. Without fate in our lives nothing interesting would happen so fate happens everyday and will continue in the
future. Shakespeare knew how touch his audience especially with this tragic love story he lures many teenagers. His plays are very interknit in ways we think we do not always understand but once we decode his writing we find how these plays relate in our lives. Especially in High School, everyone wants to be cool and fit in. Many people think they need a boyfriend or girlfriend to have a good image like in Shakespeare’s time they need a wife or husband to be happy. Teenagers will always think similar no matter the time period; even though this story was written 500 years ago you do see the trials in both modern and different time periods.
(Shakespeare.3.1.143). And he and Juliet are both little toys for fate. But, they never give up on their love. Romeo and Juliet’s traits cause them to go along with their fate and contribute to their downfall.

This play is over 450 years old and since then has been made into a movie over 25 times and performed all around the world. Many of these films, most notably Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet and John Madden’s 1998 Shakespeare in Love, have focused on the tragic destiny of these "two star-crossed lovers". Seemingly, it is the destiny of Romeo and Juliet to commit suicide because they are not allowed to love each other. It’s the kind of dramatic story that makes teenage hearts swoon: pure love, passionate love, forbidden love. And while the passionate romance of young Capulet and young Montague is essential to the play, it is by no means the only way to understand Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately, many students are first exposed to this particular work early in high school, an age at which the issue of love resonates more powerfully than many other of life’s concerns. After this initial exposure in high school, most students do not return to Romeo and Juliet except in films, which again, cater to youth. This particular emphasis, along with the use of young and attractive headliners, explains the success with young audiences of the 1996 film version. The film interpretations of this work along with the early initial exposure make it rather easy for a current reader to dismiss the play as just a love story.
At a young age individuals tend to react impulsively when they lose someone they love, choosing instead to take their own lives to relieve the suffering. Romeo and Juliet is a play about two teens that quickly fall in love. When threatened to be separated forever, the thought of losing each other becomes overwhelming and suicidal thoughts produced there in their minds, ending tragically in both Romeo and Juliet losing their lives. The youth of society tend to question and then possibly disregard the rules that are important to their parents if they do not have good reason to believe in these rules. The classic play Romeo and Juliet by the famous playwright William Shakespeare is one of the most beautiful love stories of all time and has captured and inspired readers everywhere. Regardless of the fact that it was written in the 1500’s, it is still being performed and extolled today. There is a multitude of reasons for such continuance of the play. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a play commonly viewed and known as a true love story; however, after analyzing several hints portrayed by the protagonists, it is evident that Shakespeare did not intend to make Romeo and Juliet seem like a true love story but a criticism of how superficial society’s view on love is.
In regards to Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare chose fate to be a strong underlying theme which constructs the basis of the story line. Fate has the ability to control the characters’ lives and one minor change in the way it had acted would have changed the entire outcome. Through Romeo and Juliet’s spontaneous encounter, fate was largely responsible for love at first sight alongside controlling the misfortunate events that occur as a result of their love. Apart from love and misfortune, Shakespeare suggests that Romeo and Juliet were destined to die the way they did, despite the fact that it was their choice to end their lives. The outcome of the play was a direct result of fate, which to a notable extent was responsible for the many events which were destined to occur.
