Teenagers that are in love tend to be impulsive and bad at making decisions. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers from families that don’t get along have to go against their parents, so they can be together. The language that Shakespeare uses depicts the characters and shows that they are impulsive, which affects the outcome of the play. William Shakespeare depicts Romeo’s character by using language. In the play, Romeo is very depressed because of a girl who won’t be with him. He says, “I have lost myself; I am not here: This is not Romeo, he’s some other where” (Shakespeare 19). Romeo wants to be with a girl, Rosaline, but she doesn’t want to be with him. She wants to live in chastity. Romeo is viewing his life as if it is going to end because of this girl. This quote is explaining how he is not actually there, but he is living. He is lost because he doesn’t know what to do. This quote also shows symbolism. Being “lost” is a symbol of his depression and when he says he is “Some other where” he is symbolizing his feeling confusion and representing that he is mentally not there. Shakespeare shows Romeo’s depression in more than one way. Rome grows tired of not being in love. He says, “Is the day so young” (Shakespeare 18) to Benvolio, his cousin. When he says this, it is around 9am. Romeo doesn’t want to go on with the day. He doesn’t want to keep going on if he can’t be with Rosaline. Romeo is tired and depressed. He wishes that he wouldn’t need to go through all the hours left in the day. This quote also shows Shakespeare’s usage of literary devices. This quote is personification. Personification is when a writer gives human traits to an inanimate object. The day cannot be youthful so Sha... ... middle of paper ... ...tion. One of her fears is in the quote above. This quote shows her fear of waking up and Romeo not being there. This is a method of foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is when an author gives a hint about something that will happen later in the story. Afterward in the story, Juliet wakes up to find Romeo dead near her. This shows the fear that she thought of actually happening. This affects the outcome of the play because if Juliet had not ignored her fears and would’ve not taken the potion, Romeo and Juliet would still be alive. Shakespeare’s language reveals the character's impulsivity, which causes a change of the ending of the play. In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, The lovers from rival families lead to the tragic ending. The characters show that teenagers are impulsive and bad decision makers. She is worried about whether she “wake[s] before the time that Romeo comes to redeem [her]” (4.3,35-end). By this she means that she fears that Romeo will not be there by the time she wakes up and she will be stuck in the tomb with all the dead bodies which will in turn make her go crazy. Juliet, though she is not as bad as Romeo, still makes some adolescent choices that really affect her life, like marrying Romeo and also killing herself. When Romeo is leaving Juliet's chamber and climbs down to the ground to leave Juliet sees him as pale: "O God, I have an ill-divining soul. Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low. As one dead in the bottom of a tomb"(Rom. 3.5.54-56). Juliet describes Romeo as looking dead when he is descending from the tower. In the scene Juliet is sensing something wrong but doesn't think much of it and brushes it off. She then after goes back to saying goodbye to Romeo. This shows that their love has caused Juliet to not think of the uneasy feeling she had felt. The purpose of this scene connects to the message of Shakespeare because it shows that in the end they both have killed themselves due to the fact that they love each other so much. The two lovers feel they can not live without each other and cause them to make the irrational choice of taking their lives. Another scene foreshadowing the two lovers death due to their love for each other is shown in a quote of dramatic irony. Romeo is begging Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet : “Do thou but close our hands with holy words, Then love-devouring death do what he dare” (Rom.2.6.6-7). Romeo is saying in this quote that as long as they are married then love-destroying death can do whatever it wants to them both. He is prioritizing his love for Juliet and her being his wife over what could happen to them in the future. Being so in
middle of paper ... ... Through the ingenious use of personification in Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare competently conveys the messages of love as lust, clouded judgment and death. In this dramatic tragedy, all of the character’s problems are a result of basing decisions off of their emotions rather than logic. Because of this, two lustful teenagers end up taking their lives over extreme affections and fear of their parents’ disapproval.
He asks his cousin, Benvolio, for his advice and remorse. Therefore, when Romeo is with Benvolio in the first scene, he is in a deep agony from Rosaline’s love. He describes her love as “a choking gall” (1.1.185) that he can’t resist and brings a deep sadness in his heart. Showing the audience that he is in love with Rosaline, but she does not love him back and that is why he is sorrow. Also, Shakespeare is using an oxymoron to empathize how sweet, wonderful, and magnificent love is; however it’s showing how depressing, sorrow, and the agony that comes from it. Secondly, Rosaline doesn’t want to be loved and that emphasizes Romeo’s situation. Romeo tells Benvolio that she is “not [to] be hit with cupid 's bow [or]…hath Dian’s wit” (1.1.200) meaning that she refuses to be hit by Cupid’s love arrows and has Diana 's virginity. Making Romeo upset because he loves Rosaline, but she does not want to be love by Romeo. Also, to exaggerate her virginity and deflection of love, Shakespeare uses Greek mythology as metaphors that can empathizes his words’ meanings. In conclusion, Romeo’s depression comes from Rosaline’s virginity and not wanting to love

Fate had nothing to do with it and it was all the different characters faults. Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence’s rash decisions where the main cause of the tragedy.
