A high school girls’ basketball team is made up of many different individuals with very different personalities. These different personalities lead to different roles on the team. These roles are evident on most teams, and each personality type contributes to the function of the team; however, some roles are not as beneficial as others. One major role on the team is The Leader. The Leader is usually the loudest and most positive player on the team. A senior who is very dedicated to the team usually fills this role. The Leader is usually the loudest and most positive player on the team. A senior who is very dedicated to the team usually fills this role. This is somewhat the most vital role. The Leader fuels team energy and creates an intense yet positive environment. During off-season, or improvement season, the leader pulls team focus to the “big picture.” Instead of focusing on the pain and fatigue during workouts, The Leader is constantly reminding her teammates of what they are working for. In practice, the leader is constantly encouraging her teammates and reminding them of the importance of preparation. During games, The Leader carries the team’s energy and tries to fuel team chemistry. The leader is positive during both good and bad situations. This is very important to the morale on the …show more content…
The hard worker thrives during improvement season. Though she is rarely vocal, the hard worker leads by example. This is the girl that works until the whistle blows and never lets a complaint come from her mouth. She can almost be annoying to the ones who do not want to work hard because of the high standard she sets. During practice and games, there is no doubt that the hard worker will give it her all. Because of her constant heart and determination, the hard worker tends to get frustrated and overemotional in bad situations; however, in good situations, she is the prime example of how well hard work pays
Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.

A team leader refers to an employee who facilitates the activities of a team, for instance, by working collaboratively with them in a manner that helps ensure that tasks assigned to the team by an organization’s management are accomplished effectively and efficiently. Perhaps it’s imperative to mention that the roles of a team leader include guiding, instructing and offering directions based on an organization’s mission and vision (Northouse, 2012).
The leader is in complete control, taking charge of everything, and holding the key to success.
Another major role for the captain is to be committed to talk to the players and the coaches and be the link between them. The captain must ensure that there is a constant flow of communication between the players and coaching staff. To accomplish this, the captai...
To be a leader, you have to be authoritative, but not mean, and you have to keep a cool head, even in the hardest situations. You also have to be understanding, and
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
“A manager manages using authority-or the right to get others to do things by virtue of their positional power. While a leader leads through the ability to influence other people to do things using a certain degree of personal power or charisma” (McLean, 2005, p. 16). By definition, leadership is about influence. Therefore, it is impossible to discuss the theme of leadership without including followers or to try to explain the idea of team building without explaining the influence of a leader. While each concept is unique, both have a direct affect on the other. A leader is not a leader without someone following him or her and a team will always develop a leader whether indirectly or directly appointed. However, leadership and team building are much like the preverbal chicken and egg; and many theories have developed over several years trying to explain the influence on each other and the successful development of teams and leaders.
I believe that leadership is an important skill to have, especially when teamwork is involved. Over the many years that I have played, I wanted the team to be really close. I thought that in order to be successful we must all treat each other like we wanted to be treated. The experience of being around the girls and coaches on my team made me feel like they were my second family. I would spend almost the same amount of time around them as I would my own family at home. I am extremely thankful that I have friends on the team and it is an honor for me to be one of their leaders.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
For this I have developed the characteristic of being honest and true to my words, to bring the environment of just and fairness. I gave due respect to all players, so they can trust ne and start thinking for team’s benefits. Essentially, as a coach my motto in this regard was “equal rewards for equal performance.” I gave my team members full confidence to speak-up when they have any kind of issue. In this prospect some of my senior coaches also helped me in becoming a good leader and coach. They provided their complete guidance and support which helped me in a lot in achieve my goal. They also helped in developing right kind of attitude that influenced the behavior of all the athletes. As leaders are individuals who significantly affect the thoughts and behavior of others, not through coercion but rather through persuasion. So by adopting this positive attitude I became successful in resolving all the conflicts in the players. One of the biggest challenge which I had faced being a leader was to select a strong and competent captain because it is very difficult situation when a captain is not a solid player. After giving due attention and by evaluating their performance, I select a solid captain who is also a solid player. Now it’s
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
There are many aspect of group dynamics such as leadership, group norms, efficacy beliefs and roles. For the sport of netball, the aspects of roles will be covered as in netball a player may play in more than one position or have different roles in the team with different responsibilities throughout the season. A role is defined as a set of behaviours expected from a person occupying a position in a specific context (Biddle & Thomas, 1966; Katz & Kahn, 1978). Bales and Slater (1955) suggests that roles can vary on the function that it serves. One of the functions suggested is a task related function. The responsibilities of these roles are orientated towards the instrumental objectives of the group such as a team captain. The second type of role functions is that of a social nature. These roles tend to be responsible for the maintenance and harmony of the group such as a social organiser or team clown. Mabry and Barnes (1980) proposed that roles should be separated into formal and informal roles. Formal roles are those that are given to the individual by the organisation and informal roles are those that occur over time due to the interactions within the group.
He sprints up and down the court, as sweat pours down his face and on to the hardwood. The player’s legs are in severe pain, and he is out of breath, yet he continues to run, utilizing every last portion of energy that he maintains. He desires to better himself, not necessarily for his own benefit, but for the benefit of his team. He knows that every single member of the team, including himself, must work as hard as they possibly can on the court to reach their potential and achieve success. Organized sports teach athletes some of the most powerful moral values and life lessons that any individual can attain. Despite the opposing opinion that students who take part in organized sports suffer academically due to time deprivation and focus misdirected away from the classroom, involvement in sports teaches young men and women to maintain imperative values, such as hard work, selflessness, and commitment, which ultimately improves student-athletes’ academic performance.
