What explains the shocking popularity of the Donald Trump's reality series The Apprentice? There are a number of possible reasons. It certainly could be our endless curiosity about the lives of the rich and famous. It may also be explained by our current interest in staring into the fishbowl drama watching real life struggles, humiliations and victories. Perhaps it's the chance to witness, from a safe distance, the scary and possibly all-to-familiar horror of being fired from a desirable position. These are reasonable answers however, there seems to be much more to it than this. The wildly successful show, The Apprentice, has hit on something big. It responds to an ongoing and unresolved fascination with the mysterious, complex and universally meaningful phenomena called LEADERSHIP.
A walk through the business section of any major bookstore and you'll count dozens of titles which include the word 'leadership'. A quick internet search of "leadership" turns up over 19 million hits. The classic big name leaders throughout history, Lincoln, Thatcher, King, Welsch, frame a story within which we all play a part, affected each and every one of us. We have each had some kind of deeply personal experience of leadership, positive or negative, either as followers or as leaders ourselves.
Donald Trump can be appreciated for his cunning business savvy and an ability to at various times throughout his career, make it big. By co-creating this reality show with Mark Burnett, not only has he capitalized on the public's desire to fantasize about (and for a precious few, compete for) achieving a high-profile, financially lucrative career as a business mogul, he has also brought to the mainstream audience a heated, emotional and stimulating debate about something that we all seem to have an opinion on: what it takes to be a great leader.
Seven Leadership Lessons Courtesy of THE DONALD: A How Not-To Guide of Great Leadership
LESSON #1
The leader is in complete control, taking charge of everything, and holding the key to success.
According to Donald Trump, leadership is all about control and power. Trump's words, as well as his actions, throughout the series indicate that he lives what we call, "The Great Man theory" of leadership. He interrupts, commands, directs, instills fear, controls, and makes all the decisions. He has "advisors" who play the role and he allows them a brief opportunity to speak, yet rarely do they disagree. We saw this with both of his weekly side-kicks.

Leadership is something that as humans we strive to be good at. It’s a skill that can be fostered in school, homes and sports. As Americans we often turn to those in leadership positions to help us during troubling times. Many great leaders have been born out of grave tragedy, when one person can show strength, wisdom and courage we celebrate them. Our country is driven by men and women who are out into leadership roles. Congress and government have their fair share of both positive and negative leaders. One perfect example of leadership is the position of the American President. Being the leader of the free world comes with immense pressure. Throughout history we have been able to see different men take on this role. No one has ever done the job perfectly but some presidents have made a stronger imprint on our society then others. Our twenty sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt, is one of those presidents, despite hardships and tragedies his passion for a better America was his motivation to fight for the country he loved.
While Donald Trump is a billion dollar business tycoon and he's known for his shrewd dealings as a real estate mogul, he still wants to run for President of the United States. The mogul has popularity among the rich and famous for his business-style leadership and will use this to his advantage to gain votes and supporters. In my opinion, Donald Trump is a confrontational and brazen individual. He seems to treat his candidacy with the same unethical attitude that is used in his line of business.
Leadership, just like many other words, deems itself very subjective. Specifically, I believe that it defines itself by using yourself to better others. Examples like Beowulf and Lt. Colonel Hal Moore help identify leadership by setting examples for selflessness and bravery to his brothers of humanity. These men were able to efficiently lead for themselves and, more importantly, for their men by using heroism, altruistic integrity, and charm.
As a result of extreme hard work and perseverance followed by an unmatchable drive to succeed, Donald J. Trump has earned the right to be known as a multi-billionaire, real estate icon, and President of the United States of America. Reflecting on his life, he has faced many challenges and overcame them all. To understand how he rose to success and his journey to the top of the kingpin, it is important to recognize how he saw the American dream and pursued it. Today, many recognize him as the president, but very few can fully grasp all that he has done in his life. From his start as a real estate mogul, to his impact on the media, there are many questions as to how he became so recognizable today.
Leadership is not a position but an action that is undertaken by an individual. Leadership is not just about giving orders, yet it is the action of serving others. According to Robert Townsend, “A leader is not an administrator who loves to run others, but someone who carries water for his people so that they can get on with their jobs” (2013). A good leader will support his or hers employees because a leader is not judged on their own actions, but they are judge on the success of those that they support. In the modern era, we look at business leaders in the same way that historians view military commanders or kings of the past.
In this paper, I will be discussing someone who I believe to be a great leader, George W. Bush. I will be using material I have learned from my Survey of Leadership Theory class, such as preparing an analysis discussing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of George W. Bush. In addition, I will be discussing how three different leadership concepts discussed in my class also relate to George W. Bush with examples of each concept.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
This book (the last lecture), is filled with awe-inspiring circumstances. Of course life can come with some hurdles or challenges, but the tendency for Randy to handle his medical situation with phenomenal valor, is an outstanding qualities that shows leadership and focus on what matters to him, his family, and vision before he moved on to the next realm.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Perhaps he has something extra that has propelled him above everybody else. Everything that he touches seems to turn to gold. Donald Trump’s leadership style has made him rich, powerful, famous and known throughout the world. This paper will examine some of these leadership styles. Leadership traits “Leadership research has not revealed a single trait that is possessed by all successful leaders, but a number of characteristics have been identified that are common to many of them”(Timpe, p.30, 1987).
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
So a leader is the one who leads the whole group . So is the one who has to come always with new ideas and accept the others` ideas too . A leader must ‘exhibit positive energy’ as to make the group show passion for completing a task . Leaders need always to take the first step as to show to the rest the way something needs to be done and in this way to encourage them (Caroselli,2000 p.4 ). They also need to feel proud of the achievement of a goal and show to their employees that their work was worthwhile . (p.7)
That is a well- known fact. His tenacity and impeccable negotiating skills are by far what has propelled him through various business ventures thus far. Some see this as a plus dealing with foreign leaders, being a general who will stick to his guns, never wavering on his beliefs. A Pitbull in a suit so to speak, who is not going to back down. That whole “You aren’t going to run over US, our president won’t let you” type of mentality provides many of his supporter’s security. Trump holds nothing back. His filter is nonexistent. Spewing venom that most people wouldn’t dare to approach. He is relentless and cunning. Though he has no ideology whatsoever, his fearless doggedness has appealed to many with pent up frustration and anger with no particular place to put it. Except in that little voting booth. Power was finally
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
