Ricky Martin entered the English pop scene only in the latter part of the 1990s but he was already a pop star as a teenager in the Latin American countries. He is always remembered for his 1998 World Football Cup Anthem, “Cup of life”. Ricky martin became a star with his sensational performance in the 41st Annual Grammy Awards with his performance of “Cup of life” and in addition ended up bagging the award for the Best Latin Pop Performance for his album “Vuelve”. His career with the media began when he was six years old, when he acted in advertisements for fast food besides soft drinks on Puerto Rican television. He prepared himself for a career in acting and singing by training himself professionally through singing and acting lessons. He was a rising star. He auditioned to be apart of the teenage band Menudo and got rejected twice and was selected the third time, in 1984 when he was thirteen, because of his perseverance and smile. He toured with his band to many countries for the next five years and became a star. At seventeen he left the band, exhausted and carrying loads of experience on performing and went on to complete high school. On turning eighteen, Ricky moved to New York, got accepted in New York’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts but dropped out and moved to Mexico to star in the play Mama Ama el Rock. The stint in the Mexican play led to his role as a singer in the Spanish telenovela, Alcanzar una Estrella, or To Reach a Star.
This was made into a movie as well. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 where he made his American Television debut in the NBC sitcom Getting By. In 1995 he was a part of ABC’s soap opera, General Hospital and the following year he starred in the Broadway production of Les Miserables (Ricky Martin Biography).
Ricky was pursuing his acting as well as his singing career simultaneously. 1997 witnessed his third album, His hit single, “La Copa de la Vida” (“The Cup of Life”) was part of his 1998 album Vuelve which won him his Grammy Award. This soccer anthem shot him to fame. His Grammy award was followed by his first English Single, “Livin La Vida Loca” and it shot to the No 1 position on the Billboard charts. 2000. Ricky’s autobiography “Me” was published in 2010. In 2008 he fathered twins Matteo and Valentino with the help of a surrogate mother. In 2010 he bravely announced his homosexuality to the world through his website and was dating Carlos Gonzélez Abella. The Ricky martin Foundation that was founded in 2000 runs the “People for Children” project. He is involved in many more philanthropic activities. Most of them deal with child welfare. He is known to have adopted three children in India with whom he shares a special bond. He is still a fast rising star and has miles to go before he lays his head down.
