On the day of his “I Have a Dream” speech, King stood upon the steps of the Lincoln Memorial located in the heart of our nation’s capital. This location was essential to King’s success because it was a symbol of our nation’s historic efforts to abolish the enslavement of African-Americans; an act which was made possible due to the valiant efforts of Abraham Lincoln. As the preponderance of the speech began, King made reference to the former president in what Peter Paris said was a “Declaration proclaimed to America on behalf of all African people”. King stated, “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice” (I Have a Dream 2). Through these words, he was able to mimic the tone and style of Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address while also evoking remembrance of the nation’s harsh past. Although not any one of the books were all-encompassing, they provided vital information that made my research more efficient. In my opinion, The Dream, by Drew D. Hansen, proved to be the strongest of the compositions because it provided information that was overlooked in my other selections. This work detailed the events before, during, and after his “I Have a Dream” speech. At the same time, it also dove into the important aspects of his philosophies which later became the driving force of his March on Washington. Moreover, this book provided graphics that compared the written notes of King’s sermons and speeches to the dialogue that was actually given. Correspondingly, it used the same technique to explain and organize his metaphorical references. In contrast, I found that “The Autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr.” was the weakest of the three books. Since this book sheds light on King’s entire life, the “I Have a Dream” portion was somewhat short and undetailed compared to the other selections. Also, due to the lack of a third person analysis, it seemed one dimensional and monotonous. As a result of these issues, I was less interested in quoting the material and more concerned with obtaining an understanding of King’s thought
It is no secret that Martin Luther King Jr. did great things. We have learned in school that he was a leader in the movement to desegregate the South. He has served as a role model for people across the globe. But even though Martin did change the world for the better, it was not without hardships. We gathered new information on Dr. King in the essay, “Heeding the Call” by Diana Childress. From his childhood to his last days, Martin faced massive opposition. Still, all of these challenges brought Martin the wisdom and idealism he used throughout his life.
Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future. He does this by in the beginning saying that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed African Americans are not treated as normal citizens. On August 28th, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous and powerful speech I Have a Dream, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The purpose of his speech was to fight for the civil rights, equality, and to stop the discrimination against African-American people. His use of imagery, repetition, and metaphor in his speech had created an impact with his audience. King used the three rhetorical devices, ethos, pathos and logos to help the audience understand the message of his speech.

Dr. King in the text makes an bold statement that demonstrates to the reader why great leaders in this time period in history made a great change in our nation. While talking to Robert Kennedy regarding the unlawful arrest of African Americans in Jackson Mississippi, King speaks to him about why they must continue protesting. King implores, “I’m deeply appreciative of what the administration is doing. I see a ray of hope, but I am different from my father. I feel the need of being free now.” (Lewis and Aydin 96). Martin Luther King not only speaks in terms of a dream when he uses the words ‘ray of hope’, but when he says that he ‘feels the need of being free now’, he envisions a world that could be different. A world contradicting the racism and hate that those of African descent have experienced since the beginning of American history. Though this isn’t Martin’s famous ‘I have a dream speech’, it is evident that he has had a dream and a plan to fulfill it long before the speech that America will remember for the rest of its history. John Lewis also has dreams of what America could become—John sees excellent value in the potential of individuals to change America. After Robert Kennedy pulls him aside to reverence the change that has occurred in him being ‘woke’, John explains why People like Kennedy make his dream for America come true. In the preamble, King employs the strategy of ethos, a technique which helps build a person’s good character and genuine authority. By referring to the hundred years span as "five score," and recalling the promise inherent in Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, King not only recalls the former president Abraham Lincoln, but also gains credibility. In particular, King’s illusion to Lincoln, one of the few political figures of American history respected by both African American [Plural]and Caucasians alike, sets a tone of veracity. Through this allusion, King also sets a framework of honesty and justice in which the white majority could judge the truthfulness of the charges, as ultimately, it is the dominant culture that controls the ability to effect any real changes. Consequently, without the allusion to Abraham Lincoln, King's assertion that African American are “still not free" would have served to divide the people, rather than unite them in purpose and in truth.
Martin’s life story is a very astonishing thing alone. He did remarkable things with his childhood, all the jobs he participated in, his shocking assassination, and just little facts about him. One may think that a person can’t be successful till they are an adult, but King proved this to be false. Martin Luther King’s accomplishments began very early in his life, even as early as his childhood. Starting at a young age, Martin excelled above average in just about all the school work he participated in. He attended Booker T Washington high school and graduated at age fifteen. Skipping two grades in high school, King exceeded all previous standards. He was enrolled at Morehouse College directly after graduating high school. The next step he took was entering Crozer Theological Seminary. For graduate studies, King submitted to Boston University and received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Systematic Theology.
In his speech, King uses different types of rhetorical guidelines. He uses them to show his points in a better and easier way to understand .At the beginning he successfully uses a mythos. A mythos has a deep explanatory or symbolic resonance for the audience. In mentioning the Emancipation Proclamation he shows that our ancestors signed a contract, in which all human beings are created equal, and therefore should be treated in the same way as others. He also visualizes his ideas with visual examples, which everybody can understand. “America has given the black population a bad check, which has come back marked insufficient funds”( I Have a Dream)
Through this paraphrasing of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, he is able add to his credibility, which would be an incredibly essential tool to have in a leadership position. King likewise uses his intellect to enlighten as well as introduce to his audience a personal perspective. He then goes on to refer to a “great American in whose symbolic shadow” (King 1) they stand, this is a direct reference to Lincoln. The importance of Lincoln in the abolishment of slavery was incredibly important, and it would be important to include him in this to back up his main points.
As the school to one of the greatest and impactful leaders of our time, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., having the opportunity to study in the same environment as Dr. King would be an honor for me. It is almost mind-blowing to learn that this was the school where Dr. King was inspired to begin his path towards the civil rights movement with non-violence. Ever since I was young, I have always had this strong sense of justice, to become someone who was not afraid of change or to make a difference.
