In this course, I have acquired skills that have helped me improve my writing. For example, doing the rhetorical analysis and logical fallacies in class. The rhetorical analysis have helped my writing because I can identify the writing strategies and purpose of what the author is acknowledging his/her audience. The logical fallacies have helped me reason the valid or invalid in an argument. Additional, I can identify the logical fallacies in a writing. In class, we also discussed about the sentence core and the workshops. The sentence core exercise has made an impact in my writing, because my sentences were extremely long therefore, I am still working on minimizing my sentences and making them short and clear. The workshops are helpful to me
since, the feedbacks I get usually help me think of my writing in a deep level, for example, bring new ideas.I incorporated all the skills I have learned which resulted to an excellent grade on my evaluative essay. The skills I have acquired in this course, I will continue to enforce in my writing. Intro: In this section, I will share about myself, and how my writing has improved. Process: In this part, I will demonstrate how I brainstorm before starting my essay. For instance, I have to do an outline, take it to peer workshop then I begin to writing my essay. Rhetoric: In this section, I will illustrate how to use logical fallacies in my writing and I would show some examples. Research Ethics: This will explain how I chose my sources and how I incorporate them in my writing. Collaboration: I will particularly discuss the workshops and the feedback I get from my peers, and how it has enhanced my writing. Craft: Lastly, I will demonstrate how my editing and writing style has improved.
Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
Chase Mielke’s spoken word piece, “What Students Really Need to Hear”, shines many lights on the purpose of school and how students contribute to said purpose. There are a myriad of important points, although the central idea stands out above all. More specifically, the idea that the point of school is not to memorize facts, but to learn how to deal with difficult times properly. He writes, “It is your resilience in conquering the main event- adversity- that truly prepares you for life after school.” Mielke illustrates this concept using rhetorical devices such as pathos, or emotions. Simply, the author’s use of pathos emphasizes the idea that school’s ‘main event’ is to instruct students on how to keep moving in the face of seemly insurmountable harshness.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Imagine a society where education isn’t entirely dependent upon the merits of one’s personal knowledge. Where the learning environment is utilized for personal development and growth rather than competition and separation. A sanctuary composed of unity and equity among peers. A place where college isn’t the only goal, but rather personal identity and initiative are established along the way. Such a society, fully embodies Baldwin’s ideology regarding education, and the prejudices therein. In his speech, “A Talk to Teachers” Baldwin delivers a compelling argument, in which he criticizes the problems and prejudices within the educational system in his day. However, through his sagacious philosophies and eye-opening opinions, Baldwin manifests the cruel, unspoken truth within his speech, that the hindrances and prejudices experienced in his day are still existent in 2016.
A rhetoric analysis can be defined as the breakdown of components used to make a persuasive argument or judgment on a particular subject or topic. The ability to make a conclusion or decision on a given thought or idea in a moment of seconds is a result of rhetorical analysis. “Because media rhetoric surrounds us, it is important to understand how rhetoric works. If we refuse to stop and think about how and why it persuades us, we can become mindless consumers who buy into arguments about what makes us value ourselves and what makes us happy”. In Carroll’s essay “Backpacks Vs. Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis”, she discusses the nature of rhetorical analysis, how it affects our everyday lives and explains the role context plays.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
Director Steven Spielberg and auther Markus Zusak, in their intriguing production, movie Saving Private Ryan and book The Book Thief, both taking place during World War II. However , in Saving Private Ryan Spielberg focus on a lot of complications that occur during war , but guilt was one difficulty that stood out to me. Zusak, on the other hand , showas that having courage during war can be a advantage and also an disadvantage depending on the situation. Both director and author grabed the audience attention with emotional and logical appeal.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

Well, it’s ninth grade and I’m sitting in English Class, a little bored and a little puzzled by the constant emission of rhetorical interpretations, each slightly different in their own way, but all the same nonetheless. At this point, my teacher is calling on the students who haven’t raised their hands to offer their two cents on…something we had been reading. Frankly, they’re just phoning it in. I look to the clock and, wow, we still have another forty-two minutes left. So naturally, I zone out, lost in a trance, achingly trying to stay awake. English is not really my favorite subject, so I don’t really participate in our discussions that much.
Taking this English course has helped me improve my English in many ways. I have learned a lot of really important information that I didn’t know before coming into this class. I am sure that I am now more knowledgeable than I was when I first entered this course. Some of the things I learned throughout this course were how to become a better reader and writer. I also learned how to write with a specific purpose. In the past all the writing I did was based on prompts and essays about books I didn’t understand what I was writing, and now the writing I do has a specific purpose to it.
This course is designated to help students improve their writing skills before entering a writing intensive class. Throughout my writing development of five blog posts, I was able to improve my writing ability and skill.
Yes, the course has made me more aware of how to improve my writing skills. Before taking the course, I knew my writing could be improved but I did not know which areas needed improvement. I am grateful this course gave me the ability to practice problem areas and hone other areas in regards to communication. In addition, I feel more confident in my writing abilities both in the workplace and academic setting.
In this class, I hope to refine my writing skills and prepare well for Comp 2. Mainly, I believe that Comp 1 will truly test and challenge me in ways unlike ever before. Two aspects of my writing I hope to improve through this class are my conciseness and sentence variation. Often times, I find myself adding too many unnecessary details in an effort to be more descriptive; however, this only causes my writing to be repetitive. This semester I plan on improving this problem area in my writing by making it a point to be aware of the issue while writing. In short, I am more excited and motivated to work than in any English class I have ever had.
