Respectable leaders use the ability to communicate, the ability to delegate, and the ability to inspire as qualities to motivate others while questionable leaders use control, negative influence, and deceit as qualities. A respectable leader will know how to balance results and relationships. A questionable leader will put more emphasis on results or relationships but not both. Each leadership style will ultimately affect the team. Supervisors are expected to be good leaders but sometimes fall short of their duties
A respectable leader will balance good relationships among the team members by having a two- way communication system in place. This team will be well-rounded and encouraged frequently, and provided with feedback to help and keep them motivated. When using these actions this will have great results on projects or goals that this leader has assigned. This will allow the team to be creative and to take risk on their own ideas. This leader still lacks the ability to follow through and is inconstant with enforcing the rules at time. Communication from this person is very ineffective with no follow through or very little feedback. Which leads to less productivity in the work place. This type of superior will complain about the role he or she play in leadership and will not take any steps to fix any part of the role where they may feel it falls short. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. Too much objectivity of a leader puts all his subordinates at pressure to reach a particular expectation such as quota and minimum expectations. Ineffective leaders are too much technical in delineating their works without considering employee satisfaction to his/her work.
Leadership is all about power and influence. Leaders use their power to get goals accomplished. A simple distinction is between two forms of power. Socialized power is used to benefits others and fulfill their needs. The other form is personalized power, power that is used strictly for personal gain. Having a weak or ineffective leadership style turns what could be a productive organization into one that lacks direction, is chaotic, and fails to live up to its potential.
