The Blake Mouton Managerial Grid: Five Leadership Styles
Leadership is the defining factor of a successful organization today. With the large number of companies in the world, there are just as many leadership styles. Understanding the different leadership styles is vital to the development of a management team as well as the organization. Matching the leadership style with the type needed for the organization in that point in time will impact the company in a positive manor. We can see examples of that in large corporations that will experience a shift in management when the level of production falls under a certain benchmark. The Blake Mouton Managerial Grid consists of five different leadership styles. The different styles outline the behaviours, traits, attitudes and focuses of the various leadership styles. The five styles are; Country Club, Impoverished, Middle of the Road, Team Leader, Produce or Perish leader. The model outlines how emphasizing on a particular area such as production could have negative repercussions onto another such as people. The grid is based on the idea that when the concern for both production and people are high, employee engagement and production will rise as well.
Impoverished Leadership
This type of leader has a negative effect on the organizations. Without any systems in place for completing tasks and creating a hostile, uninviting and non motivational environment, this leadership style is the most ineffective. ...del where Production and People are stressed equally. This type of leadership sets high expectations of the employees and makes sure they accomplish the tasks by working with the team. They also set incentive programs which help the staff stay motivated and they also create an environment of constant learning and trust amongst the team and making sure the staff is satisfied and comfortable.
Produce or Perish Leadership
The produce is perish leadership puts an emphasis on high production and not so much on people. With this style of leadership they believe that employees are expendable. They need to watched over and you have to be very strict and views punishment as the most effective means to motivate employees.

Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
A leader gets the job done by inspiring employees to do his or her best. By combining the best of leadership behaviors and traits, a strong foundation for a healthy organizational culture is created. As shown in the case study of Perot Systems, leadership styles of the past are no longer effective with ever changing business demands. Businesses require different leadership styles in relationship to their situations to make themselves successful now and in the future.
I first encountered the significance of leadership in the tenth grade. Berry College the largest campus in the U.S. was in search of school ambassadors to serve part in a seminar known as HOBY. To get chosen you had to write an essay describing your leadership roles, and at that moment I thought that I did not have any. I literally did not know what it meant to be a leader. I had to brainstorm till I remembered going through one of the most difficult times of my life. The lack of understanding the English language became one of my biggest obstacles, and even caused me to repeat a chapter of my life. However, I did not cease; I continued to fight and strove to help others who were susceptible of following my steps. I used my story as an example, and hoped that it would make a difference in someone else’s life.
The leadership model that is being chosen in this paper is the Theory X and Theory Y Leadership model and how to compare the two management style of each employee described in this paper. According to the Business Balls (n.d.), the Theory X manager is a person who is authoritarian and maintains a repressive style while showing characteristics of tight control and no development. They explain a Theory Y manager as a person who wants to have a high achievement, empower their employees, and giving their employees great responsibilities that they known that the person can handle.

Another example of his bad leadership style is that his employees can’t obey him and the sure thing they can’t disagree with him. These two examples made him a leader that his employees will have difficulties to cope with him. Is difficult to work under such conditions. Some people can not be effective if they have to follow such rules in a company.
Leadership styles and practices, one of the most vital aspects determining productivity in organizations, is truly what sets the standard for every level of management within a company. If a proper leadership style is not chosen and followed to lead a team within an organization, there will be no one to follow and the team will certainly not be successful. The repercussions of poor leadership will certainly make a drastic difference in a company. This can include the needs of not only employees, but customers, shareholders, partnership companies and supplier needs to name a few. Not meeting these needs are certainly grounds for decreased profits overall in the long run.

The style of leadership is very task orientated. Therefore, it would be easy to establish goals and quotas for followers to target in order to achieve higher levels of pay, promotions, or incentives. For example, a restaurant manager may design a contest in his or her restaurant that can reward the highest seller a bonus. This type of leadership has many avenues to inspire employees by rewarding them. Equally, with rewards however, they can come with punishment. Leaders are able to have measurable result that can also have consequences.

The leadership grid combined the “concerns of production” and the “concerns for people” (Leadership, 2008) into five alternate behavior theories: improvised management, country club management, task management, middle of the road management, and team management. Improvised management behavior is when a leader emphasizes no concern about people or production. A leader with country club management behavior emphasizes concern for people but little to no concern for production, while task management behavior leaders stress on production and not people. The middle of the road management behavior produces a leader who tries to balance concern for production and people; whereas, a leader exhibiting Team management behavior is able to exhibit high concern for both production and people (Leadership Theories and Studies,
A company’s performance is a lot more dependent on the people who are working in the company and the most important members is the leader. The presence of a strong and effective leadership in the information generation imposes great accountabilities to the company’s team and management networks, which serves as a critical element of organizational success (Thinking made easy, 2009). Leaders should set a path to reach the goal, so that the employees gets to follow them and get motivated. A leader should be able to identify the success provided by the employees and all the deserving emplyees should be rewarded accordingly.
So everyone knows, that in order for a business to be successful it must be under the right management and have a core group of workers who are dedicated. Leadership and conflict management are very important parts of business and it has a very close relationship with communication. There are many different types of leadership and types of power. Most would say they already know all about leadership and power; however, they are very wrong. Leadership is all about collaborating, and it is necessary to produce mutual influence and common purpose for the development of change. Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. The leadership style will vary depending on the individual organization’s vales, size, goals, and level of experience among employees. Free-rein leadership is growing in popularity, but participative leadership has the benefit of higher ratings of employee satisfaction.
