Children can identify themselves with fairy-tale characters; they imagine themselves as heroes, who are capable of killing dragons, or simpletons, who demonstrate the superiority over clever people. Fantasies based on the fairy tales are extremely important part of the children’s lives, and this is not only because they describe threatening situations that resemble main fears of a young child such as the fear of getting lost, fear of wrong decisions, fear of monsters or evil animals. Happy endings, which are always present in fairy tales, give children the confidence that despite all their fears they will be able to win in the end. This knowledge helps them to prepare for the difficulties of life, regardless whether they are real or imagined (Doughty, 2006).
His demonstrated the childhood of a kid who replicates similar characteristics as myself. We were both energetic creative adolescents; our minds would soar to heights beyond the average ten-year-old. With that being said, our childhoods did in fact contrast through what we each experienced. While I had an adamant parental involvement during my life, Timmy had little to none. Whatever the purpose of a story may be, whether the tale is a philosophical, moralizing or merely entertaining one, an assortment of characters with sufficient depth, notability and believability is vital to shoulder the burden of the author’s intent. George MacDonald, in one of his most famous novels, The Princess and the Goblin, displays an acute awareness of this fact, presenting us with some of the most colorful and unforgettable characters seen in children’s literature. When considering the exceptional imagination MacDonald infused into his story and characters, it is little wonder that The Princess and the Goblin is considered to be one of the pioneering novels that gave birth to the immense genre of modern fantasy.
There is nothing more precious and heartwarming than the innocence of a child. The majority of parents in society want to shield children from the bad in life which is appreciated. Within human nature exists desires of inappropriate behavior; envy, deceit, selfishness, revenge, violence, assault and murder. The most well-known fairy tales depict virtue and the evil in life. Even more important, the form and structure of fairy tales suggest images to the child by which he can structure his daydreams and with them give a better direction to his life. (Bettelheim).
Bettelheim’s idea of fairy tales states that a child gets a better understanding of life through fairy tales. In Burn Your Maps, nine year old Wes is constantly surrounded by two fighting parents. Alise, Wes’ mother, instituted a fine set of rules, including restrictions on certain TV shows and a bedtime curfew. Alise states that she has “spanked him many times, but never with premeditation. ”(299)
Heroes Wirt and Greg find a schoolhouse run by a harsh, oppressive, anti-creativity old man. While they first find him to be a mean old guy, their opinions change when they see the man’s reasons for acting the way he is. “Who would’ve thought making a primer school for animals was such a bad idea? My life savings, my home--Everything I had went into that dear, dear school. And now I’m forced to sell these instruments just to keep it open.” (McHale, 3) Originally, the old man was seen as evil, but a simple adjusting of viewpoints enabled Wirt and Greg to find a solution to the problem: having a school fundraising event while enabling the students to enable their creative side. They realized that a severe lack of money for the school made the old man abandon turn his back on play and creativity. By using this information, the 2 brothers found a way to use fun to raise money for the school. This made the old man more open to creative exploration as more funds were coming in. With more funds, the old man became more lenient in allowing creative explorations in the curriculum. Though the evils of the world may discourage us from reaching our full potential, fairytales such as Little Snow-White by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm teach us that good will always triumph over evil. As many tales of its kind, Little Snow-White uses a number of literary devices to attract a younger audience and communicate to them a lesson or moral that will remain with them throughout their lives. Since children have such an abstract stream of thought, it is vital to use language and devices that will appeal to them as to keep them interested in the story.
At first glance, what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale may seem obvious—some kind of magic, hidden symbols, repetition, and of course it’s evident it’s fiction—but fables are more than that. As Arthur Schelesinger puts it, it’s about “[expanding] imagination” and gaining understanding of mysterious places (618). While doing this, it also helps children to escape this world, yet teach a lesson that the reader may not be conscious of. A wonderful story that achieves all of this is Cinderella, but not the traditional tale many American’s have heard. Oochigeaskw, or The Rough-Faced Girl, and Ashputtle would be fitting for a seven-year-old because they get the gears of the mind turning, allowing for an escape on the surface, with an underlying enlightenment for children of the ways of the world.
During childhood, full intellectual capacity has not yet been reached. Due to this, it is unreasonable to think that a child would be able to fully grasp the exact meaning of a literary piece. As an alternative, their mind will focus in on certain portions or details, and they will use those elements, whether they are good or evil, to guide their imaginations in developing their own understanding of the piece. When I was a child, my mother read Rumpelstiltskin to me many times. This particular fairy tale sticks out to me, because after reading it, my mind was not absorbed by the happiness of the miller’s daughter being able to keep her baby, it was instead absorbed by the cruelty of Rumpelstiltskin, the imp that was planning on taking the baby away. The experience that I had with Rumpelstiltskin was not limited to itself; I had similar reactions to almost all of the fairy tales my mother would read to me. One in particular took place after my mom was reading Little Red Riding Hood, and instead of trying to copy the pleasantness of Little Red Riding Hood, I found myself trying to copy the wolf’s actions of swallowing her grandmother whole. When I am called to read these tales to small children, due to my childlike perception, a similar insight is created within their concept of the piece. My personal experiences greatly illustrate the ignorance of Bennett’s idea that “moral literature can produce good citizens” (232). Due to this, Bennett’s Book of Virtues is not nearly as reliable when it comes to transmitting “timeless and universal cultural values” (232). Fairy tales portray wonderful, elaborate, and colorful worlds as well as chilling, frightening, dark worlds in which ugly beasts are transformed into princes and evil persons are turned to stones and good persons back to flesh (Guroian). Fairytales have long been a part of our world and have taken several forms ranging from simple bedtime stories to intricate plays, musicals, and movies. However, these seemingly simple stories are about much more than pixie dust and poisoned apples. One could compare fairytales to the new Chef Boyardee; Chef Boyardee hides vegetables in its ravioli while fairytales hide society’s morals and many life lessons in these outwardly simple children stories. Because of this fairytales have long been instruments used to instruct children on the morals of their culture. They use stories to teach children that the rude and cruel do not succeed in life in the long run. They teach children that they should strive to be kind, caring, and giving like the longsuffering protagonists of the fairytale stories. Also, they teach that good does ultimately defeat evil. Fairy tales are not just simple bedtime stories; they have long been introducing cultural moral values into young children.

Many parents read fairy tales to their children. Young people are able to use their imaginations while listening to these fantastical stories. Filled with dragons, witches, damsels in distress, and heroes, these tales stay in the mind children for years to come. However, these young listeners are getting much more than a happy ending. Fairy tales such as "The Goose Girl", "The Three Little Pigs", "Cinderella", and "Snow White" one can find theories of psychology. Erik Erikson's theories of social development as well as Sigmund Freud's theory of the map of the mind and his controversial Oedipal complex can be found in many fairy tales. Within every fairy tale there lies a hidden lesson in psychology.
Over the years, fairytales have been distorted in order to make them more family friendly. Once these changes occur, the moral and purpose of the stories begin to disappear. The tales featured in the many Disney movies - beloved by so many - have much more malignant and meaningful origins that often served to scare children into obeying their parents or learning valuable life lessons.

In the procedure of growing up, the fairy tales played a very important role in my life. I always think that childhood is too short for people to prepare for growing up. Even your parents can’t teach you all the things they’ve ever learned, so I have to admit that most of the life lessons I was taught by the fairy tale. And even now, I’m already an adult. And I’ve already realized what “real life” is, but to be honest I never blame the fairy tale which makes me believe how wonderful life is. Because all the lessons that fairy tales taught me still benefit me for life. And there are three fairy tales I would like to discuss about: The theme of The Little Mermaid, the character of Snow White, and the setting of Peter Pan.
