Slumdog Millionaire was produced in 2008 by 3 main production companies who are: Film4, Celador Films and Pathe Pictures International. There are many advantages of having multiple production companies, some of which are: there is a larger amount of financial resources that can be used; a wider range of ideas can be formed which may also include a cultural benefit for example in Slumdog Millionaire itself, as it gives an unlikely insight to the poverty stricken India. The international co-production made by the London based production company, Film 4, and the French based, Pathe Pictures International, may have benefitted greatly from the co-production. Films produced include: Dirty Pretty Things (2002) and Separate Lies (2005), which along with Slumdog Millionaire link between the genres of drama, thriller and romance. This is similar to Film 4. The parent company of Film 4, is Channel 4, who is known for a range of movies such as: Donkey Punch (2008) and This is England (2006) presenting a recurring theme of drama. Pathe Pictures International has a wide range of films including: Chicken Run (2000) and Jane Eyre (1996) both of which differ in genre. Though before this the UK released Slumdog Millionaire on the 9th of January 2009 earning £6.1 million in less than 2 weeks. Following on from the UK release the Indian release followed on the 22nd of the same month and year. Finally in the Asia-Pacific region the movie was exhibited in the month of April were it was a great success. The duration of release was approximately 7 months in cinemas. The highest earning location was the UK, with a gross of $2,770,133 in the opening weekend, followed by India at $2,316,154 and China at $2,280,068. The reason India came second is due to criticism of the characters extent knowledge of English, which contrast the paradigm of the movie, therefore only increased in profit once the Hindi version was released. Nevertheless, the movie was highly valued by many critics and audiences in the world. Ratings sites such as Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 94% and world renowned film critic, Roger Ebert, gave the film 4/4 stars and describes the film to be a “phenomenon” due to its “dazzling cinematography, breathless editing, driving music and headlong momentum..”.
