as well as the recognizable moves that she derived from tap dancing and cheerleading. Although she finished dancing professionally, she still plays a big role in the dancing world. Abdul appears on various television shows to find new talent and help dancers reach their dreams. Abdul has and continues to impact the dancing world and the singing world through her choreography containing a mix of different dance genres and influencing others to continue to reach for the dream. As a child and young adult Abdul learned “ballet, jazz and tap,… she was a cheerleader and an honor student in school and at the age of 15, she received a scholarship to attend a dance camp” (“Paula Abdul Biography” 2).
Abdul tried to incorporate dance into every aspect of her life from cheerleading to dance classes. While in college, Abdul tried out three times for a “Laker Girl” for the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team (“Paula Abdul Biography” 2). Abdul’s time as a “Laker Girl” allowed her to have many opportunities in the 1980’s including, being the dance choreographer for the “Laker Girls” and providing her with her big break with “The Jacksons”. Abdul states in the Rolling Stones article that when choreographing Janet Jackson’s music video for “Nasty” she “ ‘shared an apartment with some Laker Girls and there was no floor-length mirror, so [she] did it in the bathroom. There was no room in this little old apartment, and [she] choreographed it with a mirror that [she] could see from [her] waist up. That's it. And everything worked out.’ ”(Parker 4). doing. When viewing any dances that Abdul choreographed the certain genres of dance that Abdul studied is prevalent in her moves.
Abdul incorporates many aspects of cheerleading in her dances, Abdul stated in a People article that “ ‘[her] work has an edge,…What [she is] most known for is sharp, isolated dance moves.’ ”(Friedman 2). Abdul still incorporates the stop and go movements that she knows from cheerleading. In one of Abdul's first music videos one can see Abdul's mixture of tap dance with her pop songs. Abdul wanted viewers to consider her an entertainer thus, she had to make herself stand out from the popular singers such as Madonna and Janet Jackson. Abdul believed by mixing together her singing and dancing she could create an entertainment for her
audience. Abdul affected the dance world and entertainment world but also the cheerleading world. She helped encourage the dance world to use variation by reinventing dance by combining different styles of dance with different types of music, which was not popular at the time. Since the music video “Nasty”, by Janet Jackson, was one of Abdul’s first choreographed pieces there is a cheerleading influence present which made Jackson’s music video stand out and catch various artists attention, who later had Abdul choreograph for them. In the music video “Nasty”, Jackson’s dancers are in unison which is a key element of cheerleading, there is an exact move, at three minutes and twenty-one seconds, that Abdul used in her routine when she was a “Laker Girl”. Thus, one can see the mix of cheerleading and dance with pop music. Although Abdul is no longer participating in entertainment herself she is still impacting others that want a chance to dance. Abdul stated in response to her role on American Idol, a singing competition show, that “[her] whole life has been about conquering obstacles and people who judge so it is awkward that [she] became a judge…but [she is] not a judge [she is] a mentor” (Abdul). Abdul wants to give other talent like herself the chance to flourish and wants to encourage people to follow their dream whether it is singing, dancing or both. Abdul showed the entertainment industry that there is no boundaries when it comes to entertainment. She challenges the idea of distinctions between different types of dance and music by creating pieces with genre variation. She also encourages others to pursue whatever entertainment careers that they desire and proved that if one acts like they know what they are doing, they are likely to succeed. She changed dance and helped advance the careers of many great singers such as Duran Duran, the Jacksons, Dolly Parton and more at a young age. While advancing other singers careers, Abdul was making her name in the industry, in all different aspects of entertainment.

For my second dance show review, I went to Hollywood to watch a show called Billie Holiday Alive. This show was a performance of Billie Holiday’s greatest hits accompanied with dancing as someone portrayed Holiday and lip synced her songs. The show also took time to tell the audience an abridged life story of Holiday between each musical and dancer performance. This show was quite unique because it utilized hologram technology to show someone who portrayed Billie Holiday. It also used live dancers to accompany the hologram performance. It showed the growth from Holiday’s time to the present and her influence on how singers sang and what they sang.

As a self-proclaimed catalyst for change, Shirley Chisholm broke down barriers within the American political system. Only seven years after the passage of the Voting Rights Act, Chisholm entered the 1972 presidential race as a candidate for the Democratic Party. This timing made her the first woman to run for the Democratic nomination, as well as the first African American to run for the presidency. Chisholm sought to break down the American presidency – an office traditionally held by white, privileged men. As Chisholm herself described, she “‘ran because somebody had to do it first’” (Winslow 107). This boldness paved the way for many, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – the Democratic nominee in the 2016 presidential election.
Dancing is something that the Jacksons are just naturally gifted at, not only because of how they execute it, but the way they can tell a story just from their movements. The dance moves in this music video reminded me of a fluid robot. When it comes to Michael Jackson’s legendary moonwalk, it truly embodies what I think of someone from the future. His dance moves resemble to me, what I would think a robot or alien-like lifeform would move like. His dancing is so animative and futuristic, but he completes each move with such ease to the human eye, but that if we were to try it we would fail
