Our sessions with the design institution has though me so much that in a meeting I showed the marketing team a new way of doing PowerPoint presentations where a picture is worth a thousand words and not to use death by powerpoint. This I learn from this our session at the SABS. This has now created opportunities for me as now I am actively been ask to get involved in marketing meeting and processes, this has made me grow as a leader as well. I was strategically involved in designing and launching an online survey with our customers to understand the views about our company again something learn during the course, the more people you ask the greater you view becomes of the world around you. Also he does not believe involving the staff to build a strategy that everyone know and works together to achieve. Strategy is in his head and no one know it. He also changes he opinion every often and this make it hard to be consistent in any approach to key stakeholders and himself. The root cause I believe is that he has never been exposed to the ideas, concept and corporate structure for him to full understand how much value this can bring to the company The owner of Queensburgh Vet is a very difficult customer to deal with. She is always complaining about something and conversation also end up in an argument. One example is the discount that we give her monthly on her purchases. She supposed to get 12% on her purchases but it only supposed to be applied to non-pharmaceuticals items. She also needed to maintain a purchase value of R20000 on non-pharmaceuticals items. Our internal staff was giving her 12% on all products which made this account non variable. When this was pickup by me, I instructed our account person who deals with her to inform her that the discount structure was incorrect and we will apply the same discount structure like everyone else. I had asked the account person to deal with her because I myself did not want to deal with her. She took her business elsewhere which is about R50000 per month. Chiefs Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is an extremely effective tool to help refine leadership and understand one’s self. The CPOA course offers a vast opportunity for self reflection and learning how to communicate with a multitude of different personalities. There were a plethora of topics taught during the 5 week course; however the topics that had the greatest influence and inspiration for me personally were the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), Disc profile, and ropes course.

Socialized power is used to benefits others and fulfill their needs. The other form is personalized power, power that is used strictly for personal gain. These two forms are not mutually exclusive, a leader can use their power to benefit society but also gain personally. However, leaders can become intoxicated by their power, engaging in unjust behavior simply because they have the power to and will get away with it. What makes a person a good business leader? A popular consensus seems to be that a good leader is able to not only understand each employee’s needs and abilities, but also motivate and empower that employee to use his abilities to the full. This requires that a leader take the time to understand the employee and to develop him to his full potential.
I then asked him if the youth center has ever considered asking for donations to go towards their funding, and if so what came as a result? He responded by stating that the youth center has indeed received donations in the past from various individuals, none of which though are large enough to have a lasting impact on the organization. I am feeling that my leadership style is collaborative. It means that I am willing to hear and accommodate the inputs and feedback from my team member. My decision-making process is started with the brainstorming, discussion and idea generation from all team members, to make sure that everyone in the team is aware and contributes to the decision process. I also always encourage the team member to speak up and provide any ideas or feedback during the decision-making process. In the end, I will feel that my final decision would be a team decision, so everyone in the team will be honored. I believe that the involvement is the key success factor of the teamwork. In the simulation of Matterhorn Health, I collaborated with all the people in the organization and considered their ideas or point of view in making my decisions.
After completing all of your coursework, what jumps out as having a significant impact on your learning?
COMS 201 has been an interesting, yet somewhat hard class. In the past, I have enjoyed online classes because I can work at my own pace and do my homework and learning when I had the time. When I look back, I have realized how much work I have put in into a two credit hour class and this class was not what I was expecting at all. I was thinking the class would be laid back and enjoyable. Sometimes I enjoyed the class, but most of the time this class was a pain. From this class though, I feel that my leadership journey has changed and I have grown in how I view leadership in my daily life. In this reflection, I will discuss my leadership journey with this class, review my journal entries if I saw growth or not, and some advice I would give my future self to help with my work of leadership.
After understanding the theory behind both the trait and skill approach, I was eager to evaluate and reflect on my own leadership traits. It was interesting to see how the trait approach allowed me to better understand whether or not I have certain traits considered to be important for leadership, while skills approach allowed me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses in the technical, human and conceptual skills. From completing the Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LTQ) and the Skills Inventory, I was able to reflect more on how I behave towards others in a leadership context, as well as the skills that I currently possess. The leadership role I found the most challenging was being the chair of the silent auction for Relay for Life in my grade 11 year.
