I realized that I got improved in the college’s level writing strategies when I retrospected my process during the Stretch English class in the entire year. I had no idea how was a college level writing before I studied in this course. Now, I found my individual step to write the college essay. In this whole year, I focused on the topic of gun control and I got a large number of inspiring to extend my writing skills in reading the New York Times story. The one year experience told me that an outline and a sketch were the strong brackets of organizing an essay. I had not used to write an outline before considering my essay, which undoubtedly I presented a loose structure in the essay. Then I realized that an outline listed the entire structure of the essay. Through that I accumulated strategies of writing, I firstly wrote a specific outline in my last critical essay. The reason why I wrote more details in this essay than others like profile essay was that a critical essay needed rigorous logic to address evidence. The outline contains thesis the statement in introduction and the body paragraph I chose four criteria what I wanted to argue in the essay and briefly summarized supporting evidence about gun control topic. Moreover, the fundamental organizing steps were not only an outline, but the sketch closely connected with it. I would use the outline to write a sketch then move to a draft. I roughly wrote the topic sentence of every paragraph and only provided one evidence in the sketch. After I checked the evidence was focusing on the topic, I would extend the context to discuss the no-buy list for guns. Now I will never ignore these two significant steps to improve the essay’s
On this essay the main difficult I had was failure to discuss one topic statement in one paragraph. On each paragraphs there were a mix up idea that it was difficult for a reader to fully understand the main message on each paragraph. The other difficulty I had was using a proper punctuation. I have tried to address those issues with reading English punctuation resources and also from a wonderful feedback I got from my professor. This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
In contrary, my previous essay writing focused on the general idea rather than details. Also, my thesis statement covered particular idea which I tend to write the chaotic article which is not enticing the reader or audience. However, the improvement that I have applied for my second essay "The challenge of the freshman student," the first rough draft focus how the freshman student handles their personal problems, and many of these problems also run into deeper issues if they are not dealt with adequately. Therefore, the significate difficulties with this particular thesis were too general not specific details for a single argument point. However, the first draft narrative argument essay, I genuinely focus on the first year students experience features. They face many challenges as they make the transition to their new lives on campus. I managed to narrow my essay topic in the final stage to specifically why the student gets homesick and struggling to develop habits, acclimating to academic expectations, etc..., and it helps me to provide more supporting details. Growing up learning and speaking English has been something that was difficult for me at first but then came easy, but that was not the case for my mother. She spent her whole life speaking Spanish, so when she decided to take English learning classes it was challenging. However, she had me to help her throughout her struggle. I helped her complete her homework and assignments. We would also go to the library to check out easy level reading books to have her read to me. I would correct her English when it was wrong and do all I could to boost her confidence. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
Coming into this course I was nervous about my ability to succeed in a college class as a high school student. Despite doing well in English 101 I was still nervous about how my writing would compare in a college setting. In a few short months, I will be moving to Tuscaloosa to enroll as a full-time student. I plan on majoring in International Studies while on the pre-med track, which means I am going to be spending almost another decade of my life in a collegiate setting. Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
During this semester, I have attempted to adjust to the courses requirements, expectations, and goals. I am still apprehensive with my writing style and feel that at times I could be missing the entire goal of the topic and what is asked of me in an assignment. At times, I over think a certain assignment and underestimate my abilities. By reflecting on my four previous essay assignments for this class, I have improved over the course in certain areas with my free writing techniques. I would need to tackle major challenges, such as sentence structure and support a stronger thesis statement to guide my body of essays.
Poor writing skills may lead to poor communications and result of this; it may be hard to be the valued members of society. College is also one of the society. If students are not good at the writing, they will have a hard time as the college students. Students should write a lot of academic writings clearly throughout their collegiate career. However, because of not proficient language skill, students’ paper may not attract readers’ mind. Their sentences do not convey the meaning very well, so the readers such as their professors or instructors think that students are not ready to move up to the next grade.
