We all have strengths and challenges in our writing process. My challenges are coming up with an idea to write about. I feel that I have lack of confidence in writing. My strengths would be that I am a perfectionist. I always want things just right.
I need to work on coming up with ideas. It comes hard for me to think of a topic and just start writing about it. I need to learn to elaborate more and improve on it.
There are several steps that you can take to improve your writing. One step would be is to learn the basics in grammar. You need to learn the correct punctuation. Another step would be to open your mind and heart up to the reader. You need to expand on your thoughts so the reader knows what you are talking about. Lastly,
always edit your work. I like to go back and read over the paper couple times and add to it wherever I need to expand on my thoughts. I have done some writing in the past. One type of writing that I have done was writing about my true life stories. Another type of writing I have done has been writing up Bible Studies for our small group lessons. My favorite writing would be a story about myself. It comes easy to me since I know all the details. My writing from the past till now is different because the teacher provides a certain topic to write about. It is not always about my life experiences. My future writings, I will try to find something to relate to the topic so it helps me to relate to the topic. By finding something that I can relate to the topic will help open my mind to other thoughts. I will need to be more creative and use the thesaurus and take smaller words and make them more creative.
The focal point of Chapter 4 of Successful College Writing is on how to critically read and decipher text and visuals. It highlights the importance of not just looking at the surface of the words, but diving into their true meaning. Authors put every word and picture into their work for a reason, and it is your job to ensure that you do not fall victim to biases and false information. It is crucial to learn how to identify author's tones, opinions, and overall purpose in their writings. Learning how to analyze these patterns will better equip you in acquiring accurate information and also not adopting these deceptive techniques yourself.
Some suggestions that Zinnser makes are quite simple. You should keep your sentences uncluttered with not too many words. You should also pay close attention to your tenses as not to confuse your reader. You should be very careful about knowing what you want to write about and think it through so that it will make sense. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. It’s ENC 1101, Not knowing what to expect I entered the room with absolute fear, after all it was my first year of college. Although I’ve never been quite fond of English in the past, I’ve always excelled in the subject. I had yet to work for my grade and no English course I had taken proved to be a challenge through my eyes. I am a huge procrastinator, if not one of the biggest when it comes to assignments. I most likely wrote papers the night before or the day of and still managed to average an “A” on all of them. This bad habit led me to believe that I was cheating myself. Throughout my scholastic years I always had the mentality of asking “what could this class possibly teach me that I didn’t already know?” I believed that my writing skills were perfected down to the very word. In this paper, I am to write about my strengths and weaknesses in writing. This is not an easy task for me because I have never considered myself a writer. Reading other peoples thoughts are activities that are more my speed. I simply have trouble putting my thoughts into writing. Since, I do not feel that I have many strengths, let's move on to my weaknesses.
My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I had to read the essay topic over and over again to understand what it was asking for. I would worry that I wouldn’t understand the topic correctly. While writing the essay I was scared to get out of topic and write about something else I wasn’t supposed to write about. Another thing that would happen to me was that suddenly my mind would go blank and wouldn’t be able to think about what else I could write about. The essay I liked writing the most this semester was the second essay. I enjoyed making my own planet and how my alien had a quest with all the commercials I saw on the TV. The hardest essay I wrote this semester was the fourth and last essay. I got confused when I was writing the body paragraphs. This writing weakness impacted my life by showing me that I have trouble thinking about how I could write my essays. I think I should start reading books and maybe I could get a few ideas out of those books.
