In the past 4 months I have accomplished a great amount of things. As the semester comes to an end, I keep thinking to myself how I survived such a big workload from this class but also what it has taught me. The most important thing that this class, my teacher and the tremendous workload has taught me is how to become a better writer. I didn’t believe that could really happen to me. I didn’t believe I could handle all the work. I didn’t believe that I could actually become a better writer. Somehow after all the assignments, and putting a good amount of effort into the papers that I wrote, I have become a better writer. My writing has improved because I have concentrated on two very important areas. With help from a good teacher, I have become a better writer by focusing my improvement on my skills in the areas of content and procrastination. Procrastination is a big problem for me and always has been. Once you form such an easy habit, it is hard to break it. In class there is always a paper that needs to be done and is due on a certain date. Buckridge sometimes makes due dates for rough drafts or parts of an essay which helps me stay on track for my essay. The most …show more content…
The content of my paper’s from the best was not as good as it could have been. Often my information would be bland and out of place. Since this class has taught me not to procrastinate, I’ve had more time to look through many more sources and pick out the best information for the essay. This makes my paper have much better quality than it would have if I just used the first sources that I found. While receiving better sources and information, I have learned how to organize my thoughts better and put them onto the paper. Personally, I think I can put information together better now than ever before. I think better organization in my paper makes me a better write and is the most improvement that I have made in any
Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
My Growth as a Writer Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have taken several college courses and nearly all of them require writing in some form. However, before taking this class, not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I am certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me.
The best way to procrastinate is to interact with other people. That way you can lay part of the blame on someone else: "Well, Mom was talking to me about something important. I couldn't just walk away." I prefer to talk on the phone to friends who go to schools far away. We usually don't talk too often, so when we do, we have to make it count. For those that who don't want to spend a mountain of money on phone bills, any kind of messaging system on the Internet is a great way to communicate.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
A few things I tried include treating myself after an assignment was done, remembering the stress-free moment when you finish an essay, and the ten minute technique. Out of the three attempts to squash my tendency to procrastinate, only one seemed to work. The first thing I tried that worked, was to set a timer for 10 minutes, and just work for those 10 minutes. Next, I would give myself a 10 minute break. This was an idea suggested by my professor in the beginning of the year. This worked at first; I would get into my writing mojo, and not stop for an hour or so. Suddenly, the ten minute technique stopped working. I would sit down, and get distracted, or do anything but my assignment. This was when I realized that this habit would take a lot longer to break that I originally thought. With procrastination, I find out that I still need major improvement. I always seem to buy gifts at the last minute. With this type of behavior, this may be critical if I’m married or have children in the future. Doing things on time will kill the procrastination. I often say to myself, “I have enough time to do it later.” That’s one big killer that would cause me to delay my goals that I have set for me. According to Burka, “When people observe their behavior and clarify what’s behind their resistance, they may realize that they are automatically reacting with old patterns and fears from the past, rather than responding to circumstances in the present situation (Burka 153).” With this research this allows me to focus more on improvement and that means to not look back on my past, but be positive and do it now then delay what to do.
Napoleon Hill said procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday. A lot of people today will actually experience procrastination in their everyday life, and is not looked at as a problem until it interferes with peoples’ ability to work and if it creates psychological and physical discomfort. Students often procrastinate and most research is observing the college students likeliness to procrastinate. To look at only college students would be bias however since it affects everyone, almost every day. To find out why people procrastinate, looking at personality and motivation can be where the answer lies. One of the leading researchers in procrastination is Joseph Ferrari. He looks at the definition of procrastination, many reasons procrastinations occurs, and the personality types it occurs in.
In “Coping with Procrastination,” Rebecca Moore and Arnold Packer discuss the various reason about why students procrastinate along with certain methods to avoid them. In dealing with procrastination, I have learned certain methods that, not only have worked and I continue to use, but some that only took my attention away from my work and limited what I got out of my assignments. Being involved in school and having assignments that were up to me to finish I learned many methods and strategies that limited my tendency to procrastinate. An example that Moore and Packer provided was having a fear of not performing your assignment or task well therefore, stopping you from completing the work and always putting it off.
Procrastination can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life because procrastination is the thief of time. When you keep putting off things, they keep piling up and getting in your way of achieving other things. Then you have missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, feel stressed, guilt and resentment; you find you are being overwhelmed easily because there is just so much to do.
After completing this project, I have learned to make my introduction, draw the reader’s attention and also, make a good argument between what I agreed or disagreed with. Doing research and using actual facts on my topic improved the style of the paper. It improved my style by making the reader notice everything I came up with that has evidence behind it, which makes my paper look very pleasant. In addition, seeing the way people observed the situation from a different viewpoint helped me understand where the authors were coming from on the topic.
I learned how to summarize better. I use to believe that in summarizing an essay that I could put quotes in it or use first person singular pronouns. I learned real quick that it was not correct to do it. With that, I changed my first person singular pronouns into third person singular pronouns and took out all the quotes. After, you could tell a huge difference in how my summaries looked. I also use to make my summaries very long and tried to fit everything that was in my paper into a summary, but once I started this course I learned this is not the way a summary should be. I now make my summaries short, sweet and too the point. It doesn’t have everything in it, but summarizes my essay well. I have learned how to use better grammar. When I go through and read my papers that I had written in the past, I can tell a difference in my grammar from then and now. Another thing I learned was how to use better sources and fit quotes in well. I was ok with using outside texts and quotes in my paper and being able to cite it before, but wasn’t all that great at finding the best scholarly sources and reliable popular sources to put in my papers. Essay two helped me with that because it required those kinds of sources. Lastly, I learned how to better document my sources. I am excited my first principal essay is over, but I’m reluctant to write another. I enjoyed the subject we were assigned to write about, and felt I analyzed it well. Although, as I got deeper into my writing I realized it wasn’t as simple as I wished it would of been. My ideas and topics clumped together,and weren’t as clear as they should of been. I needed to write more toward my claim, than ideas I thought were interesting to me.
Most humans have habits, habits in which they do simply because if they do not do them they feel uncomfortable. Procrastination is one of those habits that not all, but most people suffer from. Procrastination means to put off key things to do less important things that could possibly wait. It has been proving that all most everyone procrastinates, but procrastination does not determine what type of person one is. Procrastination is like a virus or a bad cold that does not want to go away. If one does not stop the problem it will get bigger; therefore, if people do not control their procrastinating they will start to do it more. However, the worst time to procrastinate is in college. College students often forget hoe important time is. Being a procrastinator can lead to several different outcomes. Procrastination can led to either good or bad outcomes. It all depends on the person doing the procrastinating. Procrastination is not always meant to happen; sometimes it simply happens because a person is too busy. Procrastination has both good and bad causes and effects, can cause failure, and bad decisions.
