As a young principal, I wish someone had sat me down, unscrewed the top of my hard head, and poured some common sense into my empty skull. I would have been a better leader if they had. However, I had to learn about leading through trial and error with, unfortunately, more error than I would like to admit. I now realize what many of my colleagues and staff could have told me years ago if I had been inclined to listen – I blew it as often as I got it right. Looking back at those early years, I am thankful to those who mentored me and supported me even when I could have done it better. They helped me realize that leadership is not something you just do; leadership is a journey, and learning from your mistakes is as much a part of leadership as getting it right – maybe even more so. What works for one may not necessarily work for another. Great leaders do not always follow the same rules or leadership script. They often seem to have a knack for bending or breaking the rules, they march to a different drummer, or they are cut from a different mold from the rest. They are usually self-made leaders rather than the mythical born leader. They are unique individuals not afraid to stand alone when necessary, and they are not afraid to challenge and even cross over established boundaries when needed. Leading organizations of school administrators offer educators various opportunities to encourage educators to become leaders. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) has mandated that leaders be better prepared for the task of providing quality education to all. NCLB “… is forcing all educational stakeholders to face the weakness of contemporary school leadership and is making it impossible to ignore the need for higher quality principals” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). It is believed that all educators can be and are leaders in their own right. A leader is a visionary and has the ability to inspire others to aspire to greatness. Of the numerous opportunities that are offered, those that are most beneficial include but are not limited to leadership training programs, professional development, and creating shared leadership opportunities for teachers to become leaders. The systems “…that produce our nation’s principals are complex and interrelated – and governed by the states. Each state establishes licensing, certification and re-certification” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). States use the ISLLC standards “…as the framework for preparation programs and in service professional development of school superintendents, principals, and other leaders” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.3).
Leadership can be defined in many ways, but one thing all leaders have in common is determination to get a task done. Although leaders may carry out this action in many different ways they all do what needs to be done in order to reach their goal. Florence Nightingale was willing to gather a group of women and pick up and leave her home to tend to the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War.
Leading and following are two sides of the same coin. The definition of leadership often fails to include strategic followership. A skilled leader is able to judge when to relinquish the reins and defer to the leadership of others when necessary. Implicit in this is that an effective leader has a strong sense of their own strengths and weaknesses, and also accepts that leadership is not a “lone-actor” phenomenon and that leadership is not about the leader- it is about the task and the team. It follows that strong leadership requires the leader to understand their followers true strengths and weaknesses and how to leverage their talent.
Leading comes in many forms; Philip Purcell, Sumner Redstone, and Martha Stewart have their ways of doing it. Great leaders are able to find a way that works for them and go with it; great leaders are able to work on their strengths and succeed. There isn’t one way to lead to have success, there are plenty of styles that could be applied to help move towards success; Coercive/Commanding, Authoritative/Visionary, Affiliative, Democratic, Coaching, and Pacesetting.
Does leadership make a difference? One could venture to say that the answer depends on the perspective of the leader or the organization. This is a question that often irked me when it comes to professional sports. A team has a poor season and the coach is fired. For example, former Eagles coach Andy Reid will lead the Kansas City Chiefs to the playoffs this year while his replacement, Coach Chip Kelly, was fired last month by the Eagles (Ducey, 2015). The self-improvement module has taught me much about what it takes to be a successful leader. Two concepts in particular stuck out to me: transformational leadership and feedback. I believe these concepts are the most important to my development as a leader, my performance as a noncommissioned officer, and the well-being of my subordinates.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Over the last thirteen years I have worked under a leader who would be classified as having a shared leadership style, where a team is created, decisions are made, and then delegation takes place. Rarely is the topic revisited unless new information is gained, or other factors contribute to the team needing to come back together to reevaluate their position on the matter. I have grown to respect this type of leadership especially the aspect of being able to work independently and being trusted on my level of experience in a particular subject matter. Within the last two years, I have noticed a shift in my thinking regarding leadership styles when the dynamics of a group changes. The Situational Leadership and Power Perception Instrument confirmed my mind shift.
M.D. Arnold once said, “A good leader leads the people from above them. A great leader leads the people from within them.” Reading this quote always reminds me of my decision to go into the Human Resource Management and Development field. It reminds me of what being in a leadership role is all about and how the wrong kind of leadership influence can potentially break or corrupt an organization. Ever since I can remember, I have always been the friend who others felt comfortable enough to speak to about their issues. I have always been the student who tries to find different methods to learn. I have always been the employee who makes sure my peers feel comfortable with the work given to them. I have always been a leader.
Successful leaders must be skilled in asking their team members questions that will provide useful answers. As stated “If people aren’t giving you helpful answers to your questions, maybe your asking the wrong questions” (Dennis, 2011, para. 1). Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
Leadership the action of leading a person or organization. For me leadership is a relationship. Leadership development is the ongoing process I need to use in order to become a successful leader. Over the years I have gathered leadership traits from those I looked up to, there was plenty to learn and still more to learn today. The biggest leadership influence on me is from the Chiefs at my current unit, Coast Guard Aviation Technical Training Center. If you asked me about my leadership philosophy this time last year the result would be quite different from the leader I am today. Leadership views and value change with situations that come up in our life. A person that might have an ability to project a unified shared vision with the people he leads due to everything in that person’s life was lining up perfectly. We all know nothing in this world is perfect, but when the odds are in your favor the enthusiasm is at a higher level.
The leadership role at a brand new community hospital can be very challenging, and can even require from the best of leaders to reevaluate their leadership styles. In my business ethics class, we learned that a good leader must establish corporate values and promote corporate ethics. They must embrace change, stress accountability, and responsibility. During my internship at the Hillsborough Hospital Campus, I had the privilege to meet and talked to managers from different department of the hospital to learn about their leadership style. Each of the managers I spoke to explained to me why their leadership style work best for them.
