Introduction
Leading comes in many forms; Philip Purcell, Sumner Redstone, and Martha Stewart have their ways of doing it. Great leaders are able to find a way that works for them and go with it; great leaders are able to work on their strengths and succeed. There isn’t one way to lead to have success, there are plenty of styles that could be applied to help move towards success; Coercive/Commanding, Authoritative/Visionary, Affiliative, Democratic, Coaching, and Pacesetting.
Coercive/Commanding is a style of leadership that is demanding and expects subordinates to listen. Typically the best time for this approach is when there is time constraints around a project and not time could be wasted. While that approach could work; employees

feel disinterested and that they don’t have input into the situation. Authoritative/Visionary focuses on giving the group a vision to believe in; something to aim for. This style is best used when a new vision is need for an organization, trying to get a new direction. Affiliative is a style that is focused on the emotional aspect of things and not the work needs. It is best used when a situation is needed to get over tough or stressful situations. Democratic is based on participation; gets them to listen to both bad and good news. Best time for this is when input is needed from employees and when you need others to buy-in. This could lead to plenty of participation but minimal action actually occurring. Pacesetting is a form of leadership that creates goals and challenges for people. This method is used for a group that is highly motived and understands the situation. This method could also have a group that lack emotional side of things. Coaching is a type of leadership that help people find their strengths and weaknesses; helping them connect with their future aspirations. It is best used when people need some guidance or are trying to improve on weaknesses. It also sometimes gets viewed as a type of micromanaging. These styles all have benefits and negatives; let’s find out what methods our three CEOs used to become successful with their situations. Background Philip Purcell is a great leader that took over Morgan Stanley in 1997 and made it one of the world’s largest investment banks. He was born on September 5, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has a BBA from the University of Notre Dame and MBA from the University of Chicago. Sumner Redstone is an extremely intelligent individual that put his intelligence to good use; he is most notably known for success with Viacom international and National Amusements Inc. He was born May 27th, 1923 in Boston Massachusetts. He received a BA from Harvard University and a LLB from Harvard Law School. Martha Stewart may have the most unique path to success but she is responsible for the success of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She was born August 3es, 1941 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She received a BA from Barnard College. Analysis Philip Purcell is the type of person that wanted this his way, didn’t take much advice and would do anything to succeed.
His willingness to succeed would always allow him to do things that people never thought he could do. “He displayed no excessive genius as a youngster; but, as he grew older, he steadily evolved into a compulsive overachiever” (Heberling & Houghton, 2002, p. 101). Those types of individuals have worked so hard to prove people wrong continuously throughout their lives that it may make it hard for them to listen or even be open with others; which may lead to his type of leadership style. “Mr. Purcell’s leadership style is described by a former colleague as autocratic and bureaucratic” (Man overboard, 2001). With that understanding I believe that Philip Purcell has a coercive style of leadership; because it is his way or no way. When he says something, he wants those around him to do …show more content…
it. Sumner Redstone was a man that believed that everything he was doing was to succeed and win; to be the best at what he was doing. From a young age he was very intelligent and used it to his advantage; didn’t let that go to waste. With that intelligence and passion to win; he was able to trust his staff around him but had to hire the right staff or it wouldn’t work. His passion was so high that he was able to make Viacom into one of the largest entertainment and media companies in the world. With that success he still understands that without his workers it wouldn’t have happened. He said “My secret is having a great management team. The way you manage talent is to let them run their business. If you have confidence in their talent, you do not intrude every time they make a decision.” (Heberling & Houghton, 2002, p. 122). I believe that Sumner Redstone was able to lead with a democratic style; giving workers a voice in the decision making process and making them feel they were a part of this success. Martha Stewart is lead by example type of person and she wants things her way. She has a vision and passion; wants to make sure it is going exactly how she views it. “Her management style exemplifies the now outdate system of managing by means of fear and intimidation” (Heberling & Houghton, 2002, p. 138). She wanted it her way and that was it; can’t blame her because it was very successful. She is has been very successful with her style with many companies but her best accomplishment is Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. I believe that Martha Stewart used an authoritative leadership style; one that focuses on following her to success. She was able to use that style to become the successful person she is today. Summary I believe that Philip Purcell, Sumner Redstone, and Martha Stewart showed a perfect example how to become successful; each did it their own way.
There isn’t a perfect way to lead and while some may be stubborn to certain ways, eventually it will be tested and the ultimate answer comes through the success of that leader. Philip Purcell led with a coercive style; demanding his way was the way. Sumner Redstone believed in empowering his employees and allowing them to be a part of the success; he led using a democratic style. Lastly, Martha Stewart was old school and always gave direct orders and expected them to be followed; she led using the authoritative style. All very different styles with amazing success; finding the right approach is the most important aspect of
leadership.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
Leaders should lead by example. What a leader does and how they do it, serves as an example for others to follow. A leader’s behavior and actions are an important and effective way to influence the behavior of the people the lead. Leaders must treat other with dignity and respect. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.
I have had both the pleasure and discomfort of being led by good and bad leaders. The way I simply define leadership is by being able to do as you say. Lead from the front and Set the example.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
A leader that retain most of the authority for themselves and make most decision individually. According to, Washington Post Rhee had a bold, confrontational style that turned off many. She use words in her statements ”crappy” and “criminal” to describe the school system and district’s math score. In other words, Rhee leadership style is autocratic leadership.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Depending on the situation my leadership style tends to fall into one of two groups. In cases where it is necessary to galvanize a group into action and provide concise directions, I do my best to coordinate effectively and instill enthusiasm. Conversely, in situations where guidance, rather than pure leadership is needed, I sit and listen. If the group needs to be directed on the right course I chime in, but the best work is done when the members produce the ideas. This type of leadership, modeled through guidance, has been an area of particular growth for me this past year. However, leading through pure enthusiasm has always been a strength and an asset.
Additionally, each leader will usually have a distinctive With this particular style, leaders are known to have a hands off approach when guiding others, and usually they do not provide the support that may be needed. Furthermore, Laissez-fair leaders allow individuals to make their own decisions without much interference or feedback. In addition to a Laissez-fair leader, there is also the transformational method of leadership. A Transformational leader can be described as a person who “persuades their subordinates to take on the organizational revolution as their own” (Rana, Malik, & Hussain, 2007, p. 163). In addition, transformational leaders also formulate challenging purposes in order to pave the way for others.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
Leading is the management function that involves the manager's efforts to stimulate high performance by employees. There is a big difference between leading and managing. Each organization requires a balance of both. Too much of one will result in your organization failing to meet its goals. Managers tell people what to do, to reach the organizations goals. Leaders also tell people what to do, but they make the employee want to do what is necessary to achieve the goal. In my business, leadership is monumental in us making a profit. The people that work for me feel a part of a team. We do what we can to help motivate our workers and that in turn creates a higher performance rate. Each organization needs leaders to guide all in the direction and vision of the company.
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
There is a time and place to insert these styles and depending on the people being lead will help key into what style needs to be brought to light. Being a leader seems to be both engrained in us genetically and life lessons mold into our leadership style as we progress through life. The balance of rewards and punishments were carefully applied, but he ensured to continue maximizing great experiences since human nature tends to want to be surrounded by it. My stepfather gave us his selfless service and seeks no recognition for what he did; he was worthy of it.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
