The experience I will take away from Arts In Performance, is built on the wealth of new things I tried because of the course. Before the class I had never really listened to the Blues, or even heard of Buddy guy. Now I can say I am a fan. I have seen more performance this year in the last nineteen years of my life combined. There were great and not so great moments, but I don’t regret going to any of the shows.
I was surprised by the things I liked, I never expected to like the Blues. The Blues is the type of music my dad listens to and his music doesn’t always sit well in my ears. I was surprised by the range of shows we saw. I almost expected every one of them to be a musical or a comedy because that is what a councilor told me the class was like. Wesley Stace's Cabinet of Wonders was a musical that was occasionally funny, but we didn’t get to the musical comedy until the end which was almost a save the best for last moment for me at least; Imaginary Invalid was my favorite show in the "cabinet".
I was challenged at by motifs or shows I didn’t agree with or understand. The Stupid Economy didn’t sit with me because I felt the information was common knowledge. I didn’t feel challenged by the message but by the lack of deeper thought that I needed to keep my attention. I found the group work aspect challenging. I have worked with groups in High School, but I was nowhere near as hard to get together with people. It felt at times that we would never have anything I felt comfortable turning in. Even on our presentation day I was still worried we hadn't spent enough time on it. The most challenging thing about class however was coming out of my comfort zone and acting silly, or dancing with a group of strangers. There were day...

...s that of a teenager who had seen the same act three times in the space of two days. I liked Water by the Spoonful, but it was subdued. The subject matter was heavy and it needed a lot of digestion. I don’t know if I was prepared for what the show was asking me to do at that time. It took a few days to sink my teeth into parts of the show. The meanings behind the drugs and the ghost were parts I liked that we discussed because it helped to connect some of the jumbled thoughts I had on the show.
I really loved this class. It was exactly what I was looking for in regard to something new and fun. I have spent a lot of time working on general academia and it was nice to step into a more creative environment where I could move freely and see things I never would have checked out otherwise. If there was a second half to the class, I would definitely take it.
During a musical performance many elements to be looked are not easily recognized by the average critic. A musical performance has multiple interactions taking place between the music, text, performers, audience, and space that all can contribute to a great performance. Overwhelming majority of the audience does not realize so much can be looked at during a single performance. At a performance by the University of Maryland Marching Band I was able to analyze the Musical Sound, Contexts of the Performance, and Interpretation of the Performance.
...ked throughout the concert. The pacing of the selections seemed appropriate. No piece sounded like the one before it. There was a great variety of songs played. There were songs played that were written by famous jazz composers and songs played that were written by some of the performers themselves. This added to the excitement of the show.
...ng a little more boring but I was gladly shocked that it was actually not boring. When the performers were asked question about what type of music they like. Brendan said that he like Faure & Schumann. Daniel said he prefers chain music, and Mozart was difficult for him. Lisa said that she like romantic music and dark music also. Lastly Yannick could not give a definite answer he said that he likes all music. That also talk about how it is working without a conductor, they said that there has to be sacrifices made and that they had to make it work. They also said that even if they didn’t like a piece they would work at it until they like it and go to know it better. The advice I would give someone going to watch this concert would be to make sure that you are paying attention and not sleeping of sitting on your phone because you will miss things that are important.
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. I just couldn’t believe how well everyone contributed and gave an outstanding
67 year-old performance artist Marina Abramović once said, “I don’t have this kind of feeling in real life, but in performance I have this enormous love, this heart that literally hurts me with how much I love them."
When I went, I had gotten there just in time. There were three women there that had an extra ticket, and to top it off their tickets/seats were in the front row center. So I had a very good view. As I sat down, I noticed on the stage one of the actors. He was Jack for "Jack in the Bean Stalk." Jack is one of the teachers at Ursuline Academy, Dale Mason. He was not my teacher, but I did know him. I thought that that was pretty cool.
However, overall, I really enjoyed the performance. Even as a Hairspray conniseur and snooty arts school student that I am, I thought it was fantastic. I am very happy for my friends and peers who put on the production, and I wish both the cast and crew good luck with the Schuler’s later this
In the heart of Miami, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) dance majors put on a performance called The Art of Dance. Under the direction of Michelle Grant- Murray, guest choreographers challenged the students of MDC. The students were also able to exhibit their own work, as this was also their student choreography showcase. The evening consisted of diverse styles such as – African, contemporary, and world dance; unfortunately, I cannot say the all of the pieces impressed me.
I thought it was interesting that you can look at the audience and be able to see the their reactions and really see the quality of the show. The audience remained extremely quiet and attentive, focused throughout the entire performance. I even thought many people were asleep but, I later realized they were just zoning into the moment, really taking in the essence of the music. It looked like it brought out a lot of emotions from the people in the audience, giving them time to reflect and really think. The concert was a different experience for me. The concert covered different types of styles and different artists. My favorite piece was the last piece which was Piece d’ Orgue, by, Bach because it reminded me of a horror movie, and horror is actually my favorite genre. Overall, going to this concert was a bit unusual and out of the norm for me but I would definitely consider it as a very wonderful and very interesting experience. It was very
Like Rose I was also placed into classes that didn 't help me out in any other way. Classes like ELL (English language learning) and some require course like art, and some repeat classes from middle school like us history. I like history, but I don 't like classes that teaches the same subject over again. I don 't dislike ELL, but feel like it limited student ability to be creative. Having to be taught boring diction and punctuation over and over again from one ELL class to another. The classes I was put in didn 't engaged me. up till high school where I could partially take any class I want, but still was forced into an art class for two school years. I decide to write about Mike Rose piece because I had similar experience in my education.
Theatre has heavily evolved over the past 100 years, particularly Musical Theatre- a subgenre of theatre in which the storyline is conveyed relying on songs and lyrics rather than dialogue. From its origination in Athens, musical theatre has spread across the world and is a popular form of entertainment today. This essay will discuss the evolution and change of musical theatre from 1980-2016, primarily focusing on Broadway (New York) and the West End (London). It will consider in depth, the time periods of: The 1980s: “Brit Hits”- the influence of European mega musicals, the 1990s: “The downfall of musicals”- what failed and what redeemed, and the 2000s/2010s: “The Resurgence of musicals”- including the rise of pop and movie musicals. Concluding
Overall, this has been one of my favorite classes in that I can work at my own pace, make my own deadlines (besides the due dates), and communicate with others in ways I had never done before. I am more of a hands on, face to face, confrontation kind of student,
Theatre as we know it now was born more than two thousand years ago and has gone through many streams until it reached the current modernity. Among these streams is the avant-garde theatre. This theatre achieved a break in the traditional theatre and became the forefront of a new experimental theatre. Therefore it is necessary to ask how this theatre started, what impact it had on society and if this type of theatre is still common in our modern era.
On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
I enjoyed the first learning activity of observation and can see this class getting into the mentality of education. I got this same thing from MGMT class and was surprised there too. I knew some about cognitive development prior to this class with the studies I have done, but I can still see the advantages of learning a new perspective.
