67 year-old performance artist Marina Abramović once said, “I don’t have this kind of feeling in real life, but in performance I have this enormous love, this heart that literally hurts me with how much I love them." In the early 1970s, in order to reduce the distance between the artist and the audience, she began using her own body as a medium. She has cut herself, run into walls, jumped into fire, and knocked herself unconscious in the name of her art; and, from March to April of 2010, she invited audience members at the Museum of Modern Art to silently sit across from her as long as they wanted. She sat silently, completely still, for a piece called Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present for a total of over 700 hours during this time, and …show more content…
Marina stood still, while 72 objects had been laid out on a table in front of her, and the audience were told they can do whatever they wanted. The objects consisted of things like honey, a rose, a feather, bread, grapes, and wine; as well as nails, a scalpel, and a loaded gun. It started out tame, with people doing things like sticking her arms out in the air, but by the end, people were comfortable taking full control of her body. By the third hour, her clothes were cut off of her body, and people began to cut her skin. She stood there like a puppet as people began to stick thorns into her body, and cut her throat and drink her blood. Someone stuck a gun to her head, and she was ready to die. At the end of six hours, the gallerist said that the performance was over, and Marina stood up and began walking toward the audience. They ran away, unable to face her as a person. Says Klaus Biesenbach, the curator of The Artist is Present, “that is like the Stanford Experiment, right? That is kind of a scientific experiment that reveals human nature. But what is art other than revealing human nature?” She performed the work in order to see how far the public would go. She maintained an interest in public involvement in her art that continued with The Artist is Present. While the main exhibit is Marina, The Artist is Present relies on
People usually expect to see paintings and sculptures in Art Galleries. Imagine the surprise one finds when they are presented with a man stitching his face into a bizarre caricature, or connected to a machine which controls the artist’s body. These shocking pieces of performance art come under the broad umbrella that is Postmodernism. Emphasis on meaning and shock value has replaced traditional skills and aesthetic values evident in the earlier Modernist movements.
In her article “But What Do You Mean” Deborah Tannen, claims that there is a huge difference in the style of communicating between men and women. Tannen breaks these down into seven different categories; apologies, criticism, thank-yous, fighting, praise, complaints, and jokes. With each of these she compares men to women by explaining the common misconceptions that each of the genders do. The different style of communication can cause some problems at the workplace and even affect the environment. The different styles of communication has been around forever and almost becomes a “ritual”(299). Tannen is effective with mainly women and not men. She is primarily successful with women due to the fact that her tone targets women, also the organization
In her book, Lisa Cahill, a theologian bioethicist does not object the necessity and a patient 's right to self-determination, or autonomy. Echoing the voices of Beauchamp and Childress, who both stress the necessity of informed consent, as an integral part of autonomy, Cahill views it as necessary in the prevention of abuse and unethical practices. She also views the principle of autonomy a means of recognizing the dignity of a human being that is reflected in Christian teachings. Cahill, however, does not want this principle to be the only one valued.
The tone of the short story “America and I” changed dramatically over the course of the narrative. The author, Anzia Yezierska, started the story with a hopeful and anxious tone. She was so enthusiastic about arriving in America and finding her dream. Yezierska felt her “heart and soul pregnant with the unlived lives of generations clamouring for expression.” Her dream was to be free from the monotonous work for living that she experienced back in her homeland. As a first step, she started to work for an “Americanized” family. She was well welcomed by the family she was working for. They provided the shelter Yezierska need. She has her own bed and provided her with three meals a day, but after a month of working, she didn’t receive the wage she was so
Frida Kahlo is known for the most influential Latin American female artist. She is also known as a rebellious feminist. Kahlo was inspired to paint after her near-death bus incident when she was 17. After this horrendous incident that scarred her for life, she went under 35 different operations. These operations caused her extreme pain and she was no longer able to have kids. Kahlo’s art includes self portraits of her emotions, pain, and representations of her life. Frida Kahlo was an original individual, not only in her artwork but also in her
After reading the slavery accounts of Olaudah Equiano 's "The Life of Olaudah Equiano" and Harriet Jacobs ' "Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl", you gain knowledge of what slaves endured during their times of slavery. To build their audience aware of what life of a slave was like, both authors gives their interpretation from two different perspectives and by two different eras of slavery.

“Though the letter might as well have been sent to you; it was nothing but Mrs. Pontellier from beginning to end.” “ ‘Let me see it,’ requested the young woman, entreatingly” (Chopin, 156).
Composers effectively reflect and communicate how universal human experiences can explicitly modify an individual’s understanding and acceptance of one’s sense of identity and maturation. Goldsworthy’s novel Maestro, Don McLean’s song ‘Vincent’ and Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia all inter-relate within the deeper realisation of the impact the appreciation of art, and the development of understanding the concept of love acting as a compelling emotion can create towards one’s self-image.
What do I see in her performance? Her art performance “The Artist is Present” is the first career exhibition the MoMA under took for a performan...
Diego Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo are an important aspect of the Hispanic World and well-known names in Latino art. Rivera and Kahlo knew many famous painters such as Duchamp, Siqueiros, Orozco and Picasso. Picasso became a great friend of the family. Kahlo has influenced many places in Mexico. There are many land marks not only in Mexico but around the world. The Frida Kahlo Museum is located in Coyoacan Mexico in her Casa Azul home (blue house), this is the same place Kahlo was born, grew up, lived with her husband Rivera and died (Gale, 1996). The museum holds collections and embraces the personal effects of both artists shining light on the way of life for affluent Mexican writers and artist during the first half of the century. The Dolores Olmedo Museum at Hacienda La Noria is another museum-house from the 16th century monastery, includes many of Kahlo’s famous paintings such as “The Broken Column,” “Luther Burbank,” and holds a large amount of Rivera’s works of art (Gale, 1996). Rivera’s murals of his wife Frida, himself, and various members of their family and friends can be found at the Secretariat of Public Education (where he met his wife), the Mexico City’s National Palace, the Museo de la Alameda, and the Palace of Fine Arts (Gale, 1996).
Within new media, there exists the desire and possibility to produce new effects upon the viewer, to grant new experiences. Pipilotti Rist seeks the creation of virtual utopias within the limitations of the video medium in installations such as her recent work at the Museum of Modern Art, Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) in 2009. The work transforms the typically bare atrium of the Museum of Modern Art into an active environment, where a reciprocal relationship between the viewer and the projection can take place. Communication between viewers also forms an essential component in the work; discourse becomes the mediator in the spectator’s relationship to the imagery.
leni Riefenstahl’s work in Olympia was compelling and very interesting to hear about her story. After seeing the movie and watching the documentary about her and her life I find it all very fascinating. First off, I thought it was such juxtaposition that a woman directed the first sports documentary. I find this funny because the sports industry today is such a man’s business. To have a woman be the person to pave the way for sports broadcasting is amazing. Next her story about her start with the Nazis is also very interesting and I loved that she always defended her work. She said how she felt and stood to her beliefs. She didn’t apologize of cave because she felt what she did wasn’t harming anyone. To me personally after watching this movie
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mika Rottenberg is best known for her elaborate, colorful installations. An acclaimed video installation artist, Mika Rottenberg features female performers with extreme physical characteristics such as female body builders in her work to comment on gender, labor, human rights, and value. Her work often involves women working in repetitive tasks, which were inspired by Rottenberg’s first encounters with infomercials. Moreover, by having the subjects of her do meaningless work, Rottenberg comments on about society’s need to find solutions to nonexistent problems.
People should be recognized according to their accomplishments. If someone wins a Nobel Peace Prize or wins gold at the Olympics, then they deserve to be praised for their efforts. Nonetheless, someone who has barely accomplished anything can actually be worthy of praise also. How is this possible? If only there was such a person that could pioneer this paradoxical task. But there is. Her name is Jennifer Bobylev and she is an ordinary teenage girl. She might be overly concerned with her looks but that is normal for teenage girls. She is still in high school and has no major life accomplishments to speak of. However, her character, values, and dedication to family and friends, make her someone deserving of praise.
