The first artifact that I have attached for Standard Five: Professionalism is a reflection on professional practice, ethics, laws, and policies for ED 401: Introduction to Teaching. I completed this reflection during my pre-professional block in the spring of 2014. This reflection consists of my time observing the professional practices of a second-grade teacher at Elvin Hill Elementary School. How does the Dispositions Assessment demonstrate your knowledge of professional behavior and dispositions? The dispositions assessment demonstrates my knowledge of professionalism and proper dispositions through spending eight weeks in a fourth-grade classroom at Forest Oaks Elementary School. Exhibiting proper dispositions is important at all in order to educate students with diverse needs. Students have a range of behavioral and academic requirements and it is extremely important for an educator to remain patient in order to keep the learning environment stress free. It is also important to address specific accommodations and modifications in order for all students to receive the best education. It is highly important for teachers to keep student information confidential. Teachers should be a voice for students in order to give them the resources they need to thrive. The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.

With social and emotional skills, a high-quality learning environment that has high-quality classroom structure and rules, commitment to the academic success of all students and high performance expectations, student learning is optimized. Attitudes towards learning, behaviour in and out of the classroom and academic performance have shown improvement with development from quality social and emotional learning that is supported through parent involvement and integrated throughout the entire curriculum.
Additional expected qualities that create the essentials of professionalism in relation to teaching are a high level of cognitive skills and social capabilities together with experienced personal qualities as stated by Marsh (2008) which include sensitivity, compassion, reflective and innovative thinking and commitment and dedication to the job. This support to facilitate such desired moral qualities as respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication as outlined by Groundwater-Smith (2009), the relationship of which is reinforced by Whitton (2009 p.47) in defining professionalism in teaching as being “…dependant of correct standards with the right conduct or practice”.
Building upon the learning climate within the classroom, it is vital for teachers to take the time to build relationships with their students, to develop a rappel and level of respect whilst getting to know students strengths and weaknesses as well as their interests. By taking the time to get to know students, teachers are able to cater to students likes and dislikes and levels of abilities through adaption of classroom materials and procedures (Campbell, Gilmore & Cuskelly, 2003) thus creating a more enjoyable and successful learning outcome.
In this assignment we as a team will discuss how to effectively plan for success in careers. Including which strategies can be employed for professional growth, such as continued learning by staying up to date on current information in your field or earning a higher degree, taking advantage of training and development opportunities through your employer. Gain certifications and endorsements; join professional organizations, clubs and or societies, volunteer for opportunities that will help you build your skills and knowledge, watch for ways to lead, seek out promotions, also knowing when to leave and move on to other opportunities. We will also cover how professionalism and etiquette can affect career success, starting with a description of
