For my inquiry science lesson I taught to my peers, I chose to do the sense of hearing. Overall, I am not very happy with the way my presentation went, I really let my nerves get the best of me. It is really awkward for me to teach elementary lessons to college students, it 's hard for me to bring it to the level I need since I am looking at my peers as I teach it, but as the semester has gone on I 've gotten better with this. Although I wasn 't happy with it, there are a mixture of strengths and weaknesses. My objective for the lesson was students will be able to use their sense of hearing to identify objects by whether it has a loud/soft sound or if the object is light or heavy. I planned out the lesson well, I included the five E 's within the lesson. I was sure to make the lesson engaging to help keep the attention of the students, which I believe I did. I included different levels of questions to ensure that I reach all my different leveled learners. So, overall I believe my lesson plan was well constructed. To begin the lesson I started by telling them we were going to be learning about our sense of hearing. I told them we were going to be listening and looking at a story. I chose "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?". Instead of reading the book to them I played a video version of the book. Before playing it I gave them the goal to really listen to what they hear. This was one of my favorite parts of the lesson, and I believe was really engaging. This brought me right into the content of my lesson. During my presentation I forgot to include all parts of the engage section of the lesson. This is something I would improve on in the future. I forgot to explain how ears process sounds, which was an important part of my lesson
Kimmy Bachmann A Journey into the Deaf-World Chapter 1 The narrator begins this chapter by introducing himself as well as his colleagues and co-authors. Ben Bahan, the narrator, is a deaf man from New Jersey whom was raised by deaf parents and a hearing sister. After spending an immense amount of time studying American Sign Language (ASL) he moved on to now become an assistant professor at Gallaudet University in the Deaf studies Department. His colleague Harlan Lane, a hearing man, is a specialist in the psychology of language and having many titles is a key aspect of this book as he believes, as does most of the Deaf-World, that they are a minority language and takes up their point of view to the hearing world.
In the book Seeing Voices, the author describes the world of the deaf, which he explores with extreme passion. The book begins with the history of deaf people in the United States of America, the horrible ways in which they had been seen and treated, and their continuing struggle to gain hospitality in the hearing world. Seeing Voices also examines the visual language of the deaf, sign language, which is as expressive and as rich as any spoken language. This book covers a variety of topics in deaf studies, which includes sign language, the neurology of deafness, the treatment of Deaf American citizens in history, and the linguistic and social challenges that the deaf community face. In this book, Oliver Sacks does not view the deaf as people having a condition that can be treated, instead he sees the deaf more like a racial group. This book is divided into three parts. In the first part, Oliver Sacks states a strong case for sign language, saying it is in fact a complete language and that it is as comprehensive as English, French, Chinese, and any other spoken language. He also describes the unhappy story of oralism (this is the education of deaf students through oral language by using lip reading, speech, and mimicking the mouth shapes and breathing patterns of speech)) in deaf children’s education. In addition, the first part is about the history of deaf people as well as information about deafness. It also includes the author’s own introduction to the world of the deaf.
In my Teaching Professions with Field Experience class, we were to create two lesson plans throughout the semester; one that involved the use of technology and the other without. The rules that went along with the lesson plans were as follows: the speaker is supposed to act out the lesson that they have prepared and their classmates were supposed to act accordingly to what grade level the lesson pertained to. Lastly, during the presentations, the students were to write three good qualities the speaker or the presentation had. In addition, they had to write one wish which was something a student thinks would make the lesson better. For the first project lesson I constructed, I incorporated the use of technology to discuss the identification and use of monochromatic colors for the sixth grade level.
Most educators do not make new lesson plans they change ones by adding instructional strategies. The more ways an educator teaches the better off the students are when it comes to learning. Not all students learn by listening to a lecture. There are visual learners, kinesthetic learners (hand-on), and auditory learners. If an educator can reach out using all of these styles most if not every student will learn what is being taught. Intelligence has been separated into different parts; “linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal behaviors” (Hardman, 2011). Knowing this as an educator a lesson plan should incorporate auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners, thus covering all areas.
Without the combined use of perception, emotion, logic, and language, my ability to pursue knowledge and gain an understanding of the world around me is limited. For me, measuring the success of the pursuit of knowledge is based on the fact that I am able to comprehend knowledge from multiple viewpoints, and not be restricted to a certain way of thinking. In Maslow’s quote, being only restricted to one tool, or way of knowing, is an issue for me to pursue knowledge because of the restrictions and barriers that exist when my focus is only on one way of knowing. In the case of sense perception, I am incapable of processing knowledge when other ways of knowing are neglected. Through this, I propose the following knowledge issue: To what extent is perception a restrictive factor on an individual’s ability to comprehend and pursue knowledge? Because the use of perception is so interlocked with other ways of knowing, such as emotion and logic, the problem exists in the fact that perception is a tool that is dependent on other tools.
Today’s society consists of numerous individuals who are diagnosed with disabilities that prevent them from partaking in their everyday tasks. Not everyone gets the chance to live a normal life because they might have a problem or sickness that they have to overcome. Deafness is a disability that enables people to hear. All deafness is not alike; it can range in many different forms. Some people like Gauvin, can be helped with a hearing aid, but some can’t because of their situation and health reasons. In my life, I've had a major setback that has changed how I live life day to day. When I was five, I was diagnosed with permanent hearing loss. I have hearing loss in both ears, mostly in higher frequencies, but I still have some hearing loss in the lower ones too. Since I was 5, it has only gotten worse, just in the past year there has been drastic changes in the frequencies that I can't hear. Hearing loss affects me day to day, for example if anyone whispers something to me, nine of ten times I can't hear what they are saying. My academics also get affected because sometimes I can't hear what we have for homework over all of the background noise of people packing up, so sometimes I just don't do homework because I never heard it in the first place. Not doing homework because I can't hear it affects my grades as I will get zeros for not doing it.
First of all, I think that Sound and Fury was an appropriate film for us to view and analyze in this class. I enjoyed the lecture given after we viewed it, epically because it was brought to my attention that the follow up film was funded by people who make cochlear implants. We were reminded that not all documentaries are non-fiction or unbiased! I really appreciated that because I love watching documentaries (I think I needed that reminder). I also enjoyed the film, I thought it was interesting because I knew very little about the deaf word before.
The Deaf event I attended was the DEAFestival. This festival took place at the Los Angeles City Hall on October 3rd at 12:00pm. I specifically attended this event because I felt I would be much more comfortable at a larger gathering with more space and people rather than a small one such as Starbucks. Since the festival was greatly occupied I had more time to observe, take everything in slowly, and prepare myself. To say the least, I was extremely nervous. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I was genuinely that apprehensive. The cause of my anxiety was I because didn’t want to embarrass myself and I especially didn’t want to offend anyone. There were so many things going through my head. I stood to the side and repeated everything I knew about Deaf culture and American Sign Language in my head. Sensation refers to the process of sensing what is around us in our environment by using our five senses, which are touching, smell, taste, sound and sight. Sensation occurs when one or more of the various sense organs received a stimulus. By receiving the stimulus, it will cause a mental or physical response. It starts in the sensory receptor, which are specialized cells that convert the stimulus to an electric impulse which makes it ready for the brain to use this information and this is the passive process. After this process, the perception comes into play of the active process. Perception is the process that selects the information, organize it and interpret that information.
I will be writing about my experiences at Deaf Nation Expo in Chicago, Illinois that I attended on the date of November 7th, 2015. I have to say that it was really overwhelming, even as a deaf person, because it was actually my first time experiencing deaf people signing everywhere, the real deaf world. It was hard to not look at them and see what they 're saying, because I 've been living in the hearing world my whole life where I 'm used to people just talking and barely moving their hands and arms. It was a joyous and fun experience, however, meeting a lot of deaf people with many different backgrounds. I have ensured that I meet my students’ science needs by assuring that the material needed to be cover in the class was covered. Furthermost, the students are able to learn from exploring, which is different from teaching the students how to and giving them the information needed. The students were still able to learn the material needed to be covered by discovering the content.
After doing the lesson, I felt that many things went well. According to the class evaluations and observation, the class really enjoyed the 4 different explore sound stations. The stations allowed for self-discovery, but were also structured enough for the teacher to have control. Classmates also liked the pictures that went along with the vocabulary terms. I think we did well with monitoring the students. We made sure the students were ready to continue to the next thing by having them give us “a thumbs up/ thumps down”. Lastly, I thought we did a great job at starting the lesson off strong with an engaging activity with the various sounds played from a cellphone app. It caught their attention and got them curious as to what
First, I thought it was nice that the teacher started off by referring to the students as meteorologists. It was a great introduction of vocab and put the students in the proper mindset. During the science lesson, I thought that it was good thing that each of the students were given a copy of the textbook. The students could follow along and look at the great pictures while the teacher read. The students were extremely polite and attentive. I also thought it was effective that the teacher didn’t focus solely on the textbook, she had the students make real observations right from their classroom window. This clearly deepened the students understanding of the connection between the sky and weather. It also allowed students to reflect on other times that they have noticed a connections between the sky and weather in the past. At a few points in the lesson the students got a bit loud and off topic. When this happened, the teacher would simply have the student move a card. It seemed to be very effective. The behavior system in the classroom is having students move cards based on their behavior. The teacher also had a bucket of prizes for “good” behavior displayed by the
