Without the combined use of perception, emotion, logic, and language, my ability to pursue knowledge and gain an understanding of the world around me is limited. For me, measuring the success of the pursuit of knowledge is based on the fact that I am able to comprehend knowledge from multiple viewpoints, and not be restricted to a certain way of thinking. In Maslow’s quote, being only restricted to one tool, or way of knowing, is an issue for me to pursue knowledge because of the restrictions and barriers that exist when my focus is only on one way of knowing. In the case of sense perception, I am incapable of processing knowledge when other ways of knowing are neglected. Through this, I propose the following knowledge issue: To what extent is perception a restrictive factor on an individual’s ability to comprehend and pursue knowledge? Because the use of perception is so interlocked with other ways of knowing, such as emotion and logic, the problem exists in the fact that perception is a tool that is dependent on other tools.
When focusing on perception as the main method to approach the pursuit of knowledge, it becomes increasingly difficult to pursue knowledge. Without the proper emphasis on logic, sense perception becomes irrelevant in the pursuit of knowledge. Ever since I was in third grade, I have known a fellow student named Max, who suffers from a disease known as Down Syndrome. Max is unable to efficiently and logically piece together knowledge, because individuals with Down Syndrome suffer from intellectual disability, which varies from “mild to moderate cognitive disability”. It is the ongoing pursuit of knowledge that is relevant, and not the actual facts and knowledge itself.
While the use of sense perception as the basis for the pursuit of knowledge is critical, it is dependent on other tools or ways of knowing to ensure that knowledge is being pursued. Without emotion and logic, sense perception is very restricted because there is no knowledge to be interpreted and pursued. It is the use of multiple ways of knowing that allow knowledge situations to not be just nails, but to exist in different forms and interpretations. Therefore, the combined use of ways of knowing is critical to the pursuit of knowledge.
Our knowledge is a key to our success and happiness in our life to give us personal satisfaction. Knowledge is power but not always. Sometimes our self-awareness and growth as an individual gives us negative thoughts that make us want to go back to undo it. Everyone wants to unlearn a part in our life that brought us pain and problems. Good or bad experiences brought by true wisdom can be used for our self-acceptance, self-fulfillment and these experiences would make us stronger as we walk to the road of our so called “life”, but Douglas’s and my experience about knowledge confirmed his belief that “Knowledge is a curse”. Both of us felt frustrated and sad from learning knowledge.
Zagzebski defines knowledge by expressing the relationship between the subject and the truth proposition. A truth claim becomes knowledge when your state of belief makes cognitive contact with reality. What it is to know that you understand something is different from having a relationship with something. Propositional knowledge, that can be known or believed, is her focus due to simplicity. The criteria required for belief is to have a thought, followed by augmentation with experience. The minimal criteria for a definition of knowledge must incorporate two types of “good”; a moral and an ethical. These truths are implemented to develop the foundation on which Zagzebski later builds her definition.
In “The Anatomy of Judgmen”t, M. L. J. Abercrombie discusses how information is gained through our perception. Abercrombie claims that interpretation is a very complicated task that people have been learning to exercise since birth. Each person has a different way of interpreting the objects or situations they see, because people often relate their own past experiences. She also explains two important concepts: schemata and context. She defines schemata as a way our mind functions by understanding new things perceived through sight, by relating it to an individual’s past experiences. Past experiences help interpret what is seen further, if the object fits one’s expectation or their schemata, and not something different from their past experiences. Visions are truly a mystery to our world. Only certain people have the ability to have visions, it is often confused with dreams but visions are a whole different thing. It is full of wonders and unanswered questions and sometimes leaves a small trace of a magical presence. There are many mysteries to unravel and discoveries to analyze the meaning to. The adventure that the visions takes you on is yours, it has control of your mind and will take your mind into a wild roller coaster ride.
Therefore, one could argue that in order to obtain or use knowledge in both a practical and sensible way, is to combine the two. True, sensible knowledge though, can only be found by strong Skepticism, cf. Descartes first two meditations.
Sense perception is one of our ways of knowing which is critical to our understanding of the world around us. The above quote by William Blake emphasizes how our perception can be easily altered and unclear to us. Blake’s comment was popular in his day and in ours, giving its name to one of the most celebrated rock groups in the world, The Doors. This prescribed title involves what we consider to be the “truth” and our five windows to the world, sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing inform us constantly about our environment and our accurate perceptions of it. One of the knowledge issues of this prompt is whether or not we can assume everyone has the same concept of “truth”. For the purposes of this paper we will focus on truth being “reality” and what actually exists in our external worlds.
Donald Davidson identifies three forms of knowledge which he believes to be irreducible and interdependent: knowledge of self, which is immediately known; knowledge of the outside world, which is simply caused by the events and objects around you, and thus depends on sense organs to be semi-immediately known, yet open to uncertainty; and knowledge of the minds of others, which is never immediately known. The standard approach to philosophy tries to reduce one of these forms of knowledge to one or two of the others, often leading to unanswerable questions. Davidson argues that all three varieties of knowledge are interdependent—that is, you cannot have any one without the other two. In this paper, I will primarily review Davidson’s argument of the interdependence of the three varieties of knowledge. I will then briefly discuss the plausibility of Davidson’s account and question if it truly can explain how we come to understand others’ feelings and emotions.
Sensation refers to the process of sensing what is around us in our environment by using our five senses, which are touching, smell, taste, sound and sight. Sensation occurs when one or more of the various sense organs received a stimulus. By receiving the stimulus, it will cause a mental or physical response. It starts in the sensory receptor, which are specialized cells that convert the stimulus to an electric impulse which makes it ready for the brain to use this information and this is the passive process. After this process, the perception comes into play of the active process. Perception is the process that selects the information, organize it and interpret that information.

Aldous Huxley claims, “Systematic reasoning is something we could not, as a species or as individuals, possibly do without. But neither, if we are to remain sane, can we possibly do without direct perception.” Huxley makes a very good point in saying, it is key to our society to have unsystematic reasoning, as much as it is key to have systematic reasoning. Direct perception cannot be overlooked for it was the individuals that had this thought process that brought upon some of the key factors that make up our language and systems today. A balance of both systematic and unsystematic reasoning is the groundwork for our society, and without balance we may “become the victims as well as the beneficiaries of these systems”.
The way that each individual interprets, retrieves, and responds to the information in the world that surrounds you is known as perception. It is a personal way of creating opinions about others and ourselves in everyday life and being able to recognize it under various conditions. Each person’s perceptions are used as a kind of filter that every piece of information has to pass through before it determines the effect that it has or will have on the person from the stimulus. It is convincing to believe that we create multiple perceptions about different situations and objects each day. Perceptions reflect our opinions in many ways. The quality of a person’s perceptions is very important and can affect the response that is given through different situations. Perception is often deceived as reality. “Through perception, people process information inputs into responses involving feelings and action.” (Schermerhorn, et al.; p. 3). Perception can be influenced by a person’s personality, values, or experiences which, in turn, can play little role in reality. People make sense of the world that they perceive because the visual system makes practical explanations of the information that the eyes pick up.
In our Western society of cell phones and fax machines, many of us ignore our natural instinct. In fact, some have already had an intuitive experience. The experiences can be anything from a feeling that something will be good or bad, a feeling that we need to pay attention or that something is wrong with someone, or even deja vu. Perception is recognition and interpretation of information and how we respond to such information. There are three basic stages of perception that is selection, organization and interpretation. Perception is taking everything around you, perceiving things such as the people, events, and things and trying to make sense out of them. Hence, this summary will focus on the learning objectives of this chapter.
The five senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell are all sensations throughout the human body. Sensation is the involvement of sensory receptors as well as the central nervous system in order to allow us to experience outside stimuli. The system that allows us to experience sensation is the sensory system.
To provide solutions to philosophical problems such as, how world process was created, man must be in possession of rational, intuition, and intuitive knowledge. Rational knowledge is human reasoning and requires verification. The ability of man to reason while giving logical step by step demonstration and arguments is referred to as human knowledge and it has a rational source. According to Carriero and Broughton (2011), genuine rational knowledge is provided by clear and separate knowledge of wholesome intellect with sense deliverances interaction. Sen (1996) considers rational knowledge as the knowledge of change in states of specific entities, in the sense that human experience is a confirmation of change. What are its classes, provisions and philosophical problem associated with rational knowledge? The paper seeks to examine rational knowledge by addressing the above three issues.
