Next, I am going to discuss the person-centred interventions I exercised through the therapeutic process with my client in session four. Within this I am going to explore how these interventions impacted my client’s responses and how I could improve my skills in future sessions.
Opening the session and delivering the contract I did not provide my client with enough information about the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP, 2016), the role of supervision and the person-centred approach. Rogers (1986, p376) states ‘I am not trying to reflect feelings, I am trying to determine whether my understanding of the client’s world is correct – whether I am seeing it as he or she is experiencing it at this moment’. This is a way of checking with the client if you are following their experience and being with them in that moment for what it really is. There are various types of reflection that include bodily, situation, word-for-word, facial, and reiterative (Verde, 2003). Due to the nature of the educational setting I make it explicit that I am recording the session, and ensure that the client has given me permission to continue. I explain that the material recorded would only be seen by me, my tutors, the exam board, and themselves if they wished. I also inform them that it will be part of a case study, and I have received written consent from my client to do so.
