Contemporary Information Systems Reflective report Firstly, I would like to start this reflective report by expressing my gratitude for the opportunity to reflect on the work I have done in Contemporary Information Systems. This is really a fresh experience to me as I have never done this before. I believe this natural reflection process will benefit me in the long term. What’s most appealing to me is that we students got the chance to get involved and provide supply chain information that could support decision making for the management. In this report, I will analyze my contribution to the group assignment 1 as well as to online forum. I will illustrate the knowledge and skills I have learned, and how these combined facilitated the completion of the course goals. At the very beginning of this course, we were instructed to pair up with another classmate to work as business consultants on a group assignment with regards to Honda’s supply chain. Saira and I quickly established trust in each other and we agreed to work together towards this common goal. Soon, we divided the workload into halves: I would be responsible for writing part 1 – supply chain information for Honda while she would be working on part 2 – a supply chain information management system for Honda. After getting some basic idea about Honda’s business operation and structure, we agreed to choose its world famous automobile division as our focus for analysis. A rich picture was used to identify key information to be collected from Honda’s supply chain process. Metalcraft’s scorecard was developed to address control issues in the supply-chain. The scorecard was a tool that provided Melalcraft a single reference point on supplier performance over a period of time along three dimensions: quality, timing and delivery. There were several business functions that utilized the scorecard; buyers, plant engineers, supplier development engineers, suppliers and various other users within the Metalcraft organization. The scorecard was also used to evaluate supplier performance at both the individual plant level as well as the aggregate supplier level. The scorecard classified supplier performance metrics with color recommendations indicating the degree in which Metalcraft would base future sourcing based on their “color” quality rating.

In the 1960s through the 1970s, companies realized strong engineering, design, and manufacturing functions were strong market strategy keys to create and capture customer loyalty. As the demand for new products rose in the 1980s, these market requirements were to increase their flexibility and responsiveness to adapt existing products and processes or to develop new ones in order to meet customer needs. As manufacturing improved in the 1990s, managers began noticing material and service inputs involving suppliers and their major impact on an organization’s ability to meet customer needs. As a result of these changes, organizations now find that it difficult to manage their own organizations. First, they must be involved in the management of their network of all upstream firms that provide directly or indirectly, as well as the network of downstream firms, which are responsible for delivery and market service of the product to the end customer. In order to succeed, managers have to realize that they cannot do it alone and they must work together on a daily basis with the whole organizations in their supply chains. Because supply chain management involves all functions within an organization, managers need to know what a supply chain is, why it is important, and the impact of supply chain management on the success and profitability of their organization. Today, Wal-Mart topped the list of the America’s biggest companies on the Fortune 500 list, “with sales of almost $345 billion — more than a quarter of a trillion dollars” (Forbs). Wal-Mart’s supply chain management is becoming recognized as a core competitive strategy.
Honda, like other automotive companies, also came to the conclusion of firming a joint venture. At the moment, Honda was already famous for motorcycles in UK, but it was less well known in terms of the automobiles. While Honda’s cars enjoyed reputation for good quality and durability, the import restrictions limited its success it the European market. However, the European market was essential for the company’s global expansion. With the joint venture, Honda could avoid the restrictions on the import quota by assembling cars locally, because these cars would be considered locally produced. Moreover, a local partner could assumedly offer a better insight of the market.
Traditionally, marketing, distribution, planning, manufacturing, and the purchasing organizations along the supply chain operated independently. The objectives of these organizational divisions are always different and conflict with each other’s objectives. . Marketing puts a higher emphasis on high customer service and maximum sales dollars conflict with manufacturing and distribution goals. Many manufacturing operations are designed to maximize throughput and lower costs with little consideration for the impact on inventory levels and distribution capabilities. Purchasing contracts are often negotiated with very little information beyond historical buying patterns. The result of these factors is that there is not a single, integrated plan for the organization---there were as many plans as businesses. Clearly, there is a need for a mechanism through which these different functions can be integrated together. Supply chain management is a strategy through which such an integration can be achieved.
After completion of the guided questions and annotations, student will peer assess their answers in debrief circles. Students will be encouraged to respectfully agree or disagree with one another's answers. Once the students have come to a consensus on the answer for that segment, they will rotate and move to the next question for a discussion. They will be actively, using our class laptops, adapting their answers and revising their conclusions.
Honda considers themselves as an assembler, rather than a manufacturer. Since Honda buys 75% of their parts from suppliers, they must have a good relationship with their suppliers. The positive relationship between Honda and their suppliers leads to the procurement of quality parts at competitive prices. If Honda strictly wanted the lowest price, the quality of a product would be compensated. Continuously helping their suppliers to produce high quality products at fair prices, Honda solidifies the relationship between their suppliers into the future (Bounds and Arnold).
These chapters taught me how important it is to reflect back what the client has told you in order to make sure you are understanding everything properly. Using the skills taught in chapter six, I can ensure that I am giving the client the best use of their time, because instead of asking useless questions or just waiting for them to continue talking, I am able to direct the focus of the session to the main problems, with the help of the client.

My job at TCS has exposed to the various nuances of Supply Chain Management and therefore, I feel I can add value to my profession through a pursuit of this course.
In the course itself and in each module students would be provided with opportunities to interact and connect with other students and the instructor. Discussion boards were built into each module to facilitate communication, collaboration, and interactivity. Additional group exercises were developed to further foster the development of collaboration and community building within the course.
