As the Declaration of Independence was composed in the late 18th century, acquiring the vocabulary is a critical first step. Prior to the first day of instruction, students can be assigned the necessary vocabulary from Vocabulary.com. The list I assign has 25 words and the student will have a week to work through the list. By allowing them this time, students can work at their own pace and develop an individual strategy for vocabulary acquisition. After a week of practice, students can be given a quiz to assess their acquisition. When assigned the text itself, students will be given a hard copy (containing annotations), with guided, line-specific questions, to annotate for features of an argument. After completion of the guided questions and annotations, student will peer assess their answers in debrief circles. Students will be encouraged to respectfully agree or disagree with one another's answers. Once the students have come to a consensus on the answer for that segment, they will rotate and move to the next question for a discussion. They will be actively, using our class laptops, adapting their answers and revising their conclusions. After completion of the performance goal, student will be given another analysis of a historical speech with argumentative qualities. This assignment will be completed in small groups and a PowerPoint presentation will be the final product. This PPT will be presented to the class and followed by a sentence frame supported Q & A section for the group. As demonstrated in the video, students will complete peer reviews on the presentation for the information within and the quality of the presentation. The closing performance task for the unit is found in the Collections text book. The prompt is: "Write an evaluation of how the effectiveness of the Declaration as a speech compares to its effectiveness
