It is a well known fact that people have different attitudes given in the society, relationships, and even in the workplace. Respectively, each person responds to external stimuli in their own unique way. Someone would have self confidence in solving problems, organizing work, and take responsibility; others prefer to remain behind the walls and act in a less direct way. There is no exact model of behavior; any approach to life is reasonable until it is natural for a particular person. But, despite his attitude, all people get nervous in certain situations. One of the most typical in even the most confident cases individuals may feel like a fish out of water is the first day in a new workplace.

My boss briefly explained to me my tasks for the day. I was alone with my truck and a list of addresses to which had to make deliveries. The boss did not even provide me phone numbers of people that I had to call to verify their addresses. In addition, everyone around me seemed to be too busy in their own packages and deliveries to be willing to help a newcomer like me. Everything that I felt in the first couple of hours of my job was anxiety. The first day at a new job is difficult for many individuals due to several reasons. The initial reason for feeling unease is a natural embarrassment that is accompanied with being in a completely new surrounding. A new person usually is unfamiliar with the local customs of the new company they start to work at, so the first period of time they have to spend as aliens. Next, a new work implies that the newcomer is being tested and watched with special attention; this adds responsibilities and stress. Finally, the new worker is often extremely critical of themselves, being alert of even the smallest flaws or mistakes; they have to learn vast volumes of new information and obtain numerous

This can be due to the implantation of a new policy, or could be one of an adversarial nature, because someone views the new supervisor as either a transitional situation, and using the position, and the employees as a stepping stone, or maybe they were passed over for the role, or feel the knowledge base is inferior. Make no mistake we all have a job to do, and we have all had missions, and objections to complete in a certain manner in which we felt could be handled differently. Sometimes when asked for an explanation, it’s given, sometimes not. There are times when a person must go against what is common or what others want them to do. I would define this a form resistance. To me resistance is going against what is common, or standing up to someone or some thing that you normally would not. This is a common occurrence in the workplace. Resistance in the workplace is nessicary at times to prevent getting stepped on while climbing the corporate latter. Granted there are also times when the best thing to do is sit back and let things happen. There are however times when an employee must make some noise to be heard and noticed. When someone sees oneself about to be passed up for a promotion that they are entitled to, he or she must do something. Another time some form of resistance should be shown would be in the case of a supervisor or manager on a "power-trip". A person should not just let a manager create work or assign jobs that do nothing more than waste valuable manpower because it makes them feel important. My last example of resistance in the workplace is competition between departments that hinders the progress of the other department. Ideally none of this would happen but in today's society ware everyone is out for himself or herself sometimes someone has to shake things up a bit.

I believe that all nurses have felt a sense of uneasiness or fear when moving into uncharted territory in our nursing practice.
