The United States would have never been established without General Washington’s phenomenal tactics and “confidence” in the Revolutionary War. According to http://www.dictionary.com/, “confidence”, “is full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing,” and in fact, it is one of the hardest virtues people can attain (Dictionary.com). In life, we are aware of the many celebrities and successful people across multiple fields. We often ask the question why and how those people can reach the success, apart from the virtues, the qualities needed as hardworking, talented and flexible communication, or luck. To earn the same success as those people, we need to have a quality that is very important, “confidence”. …show more content…
Moreover, self-confidence is something that cannot be taught. It is up to the individual to decide how much belief that they possess inside of themselves. Further, the more people believe in success and in the achievements that they have accomplished in the past, the more they can firmly embrace new challenges in the future. In contrast, “confidence” is opposite to some of people’s negative personalities such as cowardness, timidity, and it can lead them to be afraid to fail, or do not dare to pursue their dreams. Throughout life, “confidence” can be expressed from the smallest action as a student presenting or contributing ideas to the class lessons, or a scientist announcing his inventions, or even a writer publishing his books. The best way to gain self-confidence is to look deep inside of ourselves and believe that we have the ability to overcome all obstacles and challenges we are faced with on a daily bases because our self-esteem is one of the few things that we have control over. Thus, practicing to be more confident is a crucial task people should do every …show more content…
However, not everyone has the “confidence” on their own. In life, we still see those people who are shy, lack of courage in themselves, or prefer to rely on others, on their parents, and leading to a lack of skills and knowledge. Typically, a number of young people, despite stepping to adulthood, is still not engaging in the world. As a result, they have to live the dependent lives, and they are still clinging to their parents. Some people who lack of “confidence” do not dare to accept the challenges in their jobs to seek for opportunities. Recently, I have struggled with confidence in one of the most important aspects of my life: singing. With schoolwork, I feel completely confident in my work, but singing is a different story. Lately, I have been displeased and uncomfortable with my performances, instead of the ease that I used to practice in my rehearsals. After every mistake, I would get down on myself. It has been hard for me to find out how to gain and reach confidence. Through several talks from my vocal coaches, I finally believe that I am a good performer, and I cannot let pressure get to me. Moreover, I have learned that if one cannot believe in being able to do something, one will not do it. I am slowly building my confidence by believing in myself and trusting in my abilities. At the same time, we need to understand that not only “confidence” is not enough
George Washington was the leader of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, led the Continental Congress in the development of the United States Constitution and served as the first United States President. His enduring contributions were far reaching and greatly impacted the course of American and world history. While Washington is the epitome of a strategic leader, he was not without his weaknesses. As a military commander, Washington made serious mistakes, however, his most significant strength was his ability to survive his mistakes and learn from them. Setbacks early in life, coupled with disappointment at the start of his military career set the foundation for Washington to emerge as America’s most iconic strategic

What does it mean to possess confidence? Confidence is one word that has a vast impact on today’s society. Without confidence one’s whole life could and will be turned completely upside down. The meaning of confidence is having, without a doubt, total belief in oneself. Self-confidence is something that cannot be taught, but instead learned through personal experience. The autobiographical narrative, “Fish Cheeks,” by Amy Tan, is about a fourteen-year-old girl who describes her thoughts and feelings about the minister’s son and reveals to the reader that she is not accepting of herself. Throughout my life I have learned not to let others dictate my opinion of myself, because who I am or where I originated from is qualified and in reality, no one is capable of standing in my shoes. “Fish Cheeks,” written by Amy Tan, is a
Performing or public speaking of any kind is difficult, but that difficulty can help to build confidence. Fine arts gives students the ability to perform and build confidence with their own support team of people who do and love the same thing. Not having to perform alone and knowing that everything possible has been done to ensure a good performance helps performers be confident in themselves and in their abilities. “Puneet Jacob, former choristers and current assistant conductor, says kids are often afraid to perform because of fear of failure.” (Lefebvre) The more a person faces their fear, especially when they do well and the fear is disproved, the less afraid he or she will become. When students work on music or a play for months on end, they become much more confident in themselves and what they can do than they were when they first began.
In the Webster's online dictionary, self-confidence is defined as confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities. A famous quote by Jim Loehr says, "With confidence, you can reach truly amazing heights; Without confidence, even the simplest accomplishments are beyond your grasp." Confidence in yourself does not come without effort. One must believe in themselves, and not let someone change their beliefs. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Jane shows self-confidence throughout the novel, by possessing a sense of self-worth, dignity, and a trust in God.
Nowadays, lacking self-confidence is a common human conflict. It can be caused for the society that values better and bigger; it can be hard to overcome people insecurities. Also, many people are afraid of showing their authentic personalities just because of other people, the society stereotypes and expectations. Moreover, a lot of people think about changing other people instead of thinking about how can they make some changes in their lives or make changes about themselves to be better in some different ways. Also, people usually try to be better than others just as a part of a competition instead of trying to be a better person or being better than the person they were before in order to improve their lives.
An individuals sense of self-importance or self-esteem can go a long distance in determining their perspective of themselves and their world around them. Erik Erikson, a developmental psychologist, highlights the importance of how the role of society and culture can affect an individual's ego. Erikson’s theory on the development of human beings discusses how a person’s level of confidence influences their ability to solve problems in society. Erikson believed that a persons potential in trusting others, or how a person views themselves personally is affected by how their confidence levels developed throughout certain stages of their life (McLeod, Saul). In order to expand on Erikson's ideas of the development of the human ego, he created a model that represents eight stages of development that occurs in a person's lifespan. In this model, the first five stages take place up to adulthood and the other three stages take place into and after adulthood. The progression and development of these stages is dependent on the previous stage (Davis & Clifton, 1995).
Adding to that quality is confidence, and it’s a quality that every great leader requires. A great leader should desire to be assertive and confident; confidence in a leader doesn’t only make the leader look more appealing but also inspires trust. A confident leader has the ability to rally his/her followers to any cause.
One thing all successful heroes have in common is self confidence and the belief of being able to accomplish anything. “Abraham Lincoln responded to the crisis wielding powers as no other president before him.” (biography.com 4). If Lincoln didn’t have faith in himself then this country would not have continued to be called the United States of America and the world would
People can never experience their true character when hiding behind a façade of self-doubt. Not only are these individuals hurting themselves, but they are also harming their relationships with others. Insecurity comes from the lack of confidence in an individual. Wanting approval is shown in those who are insecure. When this emotion grows it becomes something as ugly as jealousy. As well as an addiction to the dependency of another person. Nevertheless, insecurity is a powerful emotion that creates a negative effect on an individual’s ability to view themselves positively and impacts their
A great president must have confidence. To start off, the president must have confidence in himself. He has to have confidence that he can do the job, serve his country well,
The term self confidence essentially means to have trust and faith in oneself. A self confident person in a sense is able to act on opportunities, face challenges, and take on difficult situations without the fear of failing. Similarly to how the foundation of a successful experience is confidence, the foundation of confidence is also one and/or multiple successful experience(s). The title explores this phenomenon by stating that humans are only confident within themselves and/or their knowledge when they have little else to base their conclusions upon. The notion that humans became less self-assured through the formation of a strengthened awareness may seem to be inconsistent. However, when one reaches into the bucket of worldly knowledge they then must pull away from their own minds; in turn causing their former outlook to be altered. This lead me to consider the means in which the world may influence an individual, and thus question: in what ways can one’s actions be shaped by mankind? Using my
Often in my life I feel I have trouble finding the intangible line between confidence and arrogance. It's like trying to make a peanut butter sandwich: if you spread the peanut butter too thin, you have something not worth having, but if you spread it too thick, you know you will regret it. I value a lot of different things in life, and in my attempts at mastering them I have usually been successful. This success has produced a definite level of confidence in my own abilities, but too often I have suddenly felt the arrogance sticking to the roof of my mouth. This wouldn't be so bad but often times it makes it hard to smile.
Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
Most of life's situations are learning experiences. People can learn what activities are right or wrong for them by experiences these emotions in different situations. These learning experiences can take place at home, school, the workplace, or anywhere else. The three major experiences that have given me confidence in my ability to learn have all taken place at Penn State University.
