Throughout the semester, I was successful in hitting all three speaking and listening GCOs. In this section I self-evaluated my skills during informal speaking and listening conversations as well as my essential question pitch proposal. In regards to speaking and listening I have improved on skills such as generating and sustaining discussions, I have learned how to properly have a conversation both verbally and non-verbally, and also to interact with sensitivity and respect towards my peers (Grade Twelve English Language Arts Essential Learning Outcomes).

The Socratic seminar regarding the mosque shooting that occurred in Quebec was when I discovered my abilities to get involved in the conversations verbally, and also non-verbally. I knew when to speak up and express my thoughts and feelings without interrupting any of my classmates. While speaking I was certain to focus on appropriate body language that kept my peers engaged in what I was communicating to them. Compared to small group discussions early in the semester in which I was scared to engage myself in the conversations, I believe that I elevated my skills substantially. Following my essential question proposal presentation, I had an interview with Mr. Cormier, we discussed what was good about my poster board and also what things I needed to improve on. Leaving this discussion, he gave me a rubric with my mark and additional side notes. When creating my website, I took into consideration what feedback he gave me. Mr. Cormier told me during our interview, “that i should include multiple double-entry journals because they can show my note-taking ability”, without hesitation I took his advice and completed the double-entry journals and put them on my website. This particular GCO was one that I did well at, but because I wanted to improve my mark, I had to self-evaluate myself to determine what things I could work on. After thinking about it, and looking over my rubrics I realized that I was not asking insightful questions or questions at all. Since mid-semester I wanted to improve on this skill to get a more complete mark. Each discussion I was involved in, I made a point to ask at least one insightful question and involve one of my group members in the conversation as well. A few examples of insightful questions that I've learned to use over the course of the year are, “if you are living in the world where you need to be perfect all the time, is it really perfect?” and, “as it becomes more aware that it's happening, will it eliminate racism?” Following mid-semester I wanted to continue doing the things that I excelled at; such a body language and behaviour. During a small group discussions with Lucky and Johnny, I was asking insightful questions while sitting with a relaxed posture, and when they were expressing their ideas, I would nod and agree with what they were saying so that they knew I was listening. As the semester went on I kept doing these things, but the more discussions I had it seemed to just become second nature
For the two learning outcomes that I benefited the most from are critical thinking and oral communication. First, critical thinking presented a unique challenge

All my questions were answered with great thought. In the answers, I noticed that my professor was telling me to make sure that everything I do is to better myself. I was given lots of advice, but one piece of advice I learned from my professor was that self-evaluations at the end of each week are very important for myself to correct

In life, we rarely have the chance for a do-over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A’s and B’s for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging the audience; the structure keys appropriate for a speech versus a paper; the support keys by continually engaging the audience; and finally the style keys by practicing the use of body language and reducing the verbal junk.
However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Nonetheless, this circumstance made me very diligent in all my classes, for it made me very attentive to the topics discussed, and it made me evaluate the extent to which I studied. As a result, with my grades and work ethics throughout the year, I proved those teachers wrong and received an apology from the one I came to admire
The irony is that speaking to others is one of the most important, if not the most important, professional and personal skill students must have to be successful (Doyle 88). The student needs to understand the importance of this skill and realize that in the future many opportunities and career successes are directly impacted by working with others. Students are also encouraged to take charge of their learning. Giving the student control and as many choices is a good way to optimized their learning.

Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment.
Communication is truly complex, indeed, as there is a multitude of various methods in which to converse with other individuals. For instance, sociologist Anne Donnellon devised a technique (pertinent to groups and teams), which she refers to as "team talk." Moreover, Donnellon created the concept as an ideal form of discourse amongst team members. Exemplifying, Engleberg & Wynn (2013) provide insight into the six dimensions of team talk, which include the following:
Throughout life we express ourselves through words. The way we present ourselves through speech says a lot about our character. The way one speaks to others can jeopardize the amount of respect and trust others have for them. From the way one pronounces a word to their posture can affect the way an audience interprets what is being said. Personally, I am not confident with my speaking skills at this point. I would like my audience to fully comprehend the concepts or facts that I would present to them. In order to do so I must improve my speaking skills I believe that a problem most people, including myself, have when giving speeches is facing an audience. Just looking out to an audience of a mere ten could get your knees knocking. I know it is important not to let your audience know that you are nervous because this could easily make them doubt what you are about to say. It is impossible to speak at ease without knowing what you are talking about. I guess the only way to ease this overwhelming anxiety when stepping up to the podium would be through thorough preparation.
To facilitate or participate in any classroom activities requires the use of oral language. Talk is significantly important because "language that is heard must be understood before the language that is read can be decoded and understood" (McCandlish, 2012, pg. 9). Specifically, Halliday (1975) categorised language into seven different functions each with its own purpose, allowing students to comprehend that language like writing has different genres and can be formal or informal, depending on the audience, context or purpose.
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
My perception of myself is that I am reserved, slow to warm up, and withdrawn in most social communication contexts. My strengths and weaknesses of interpersonal communication and giving feedback are impacted by my self concept. When interaction with others I excel at asking open-ended questions and restating what I have been told. I will work on improving my nonverbal communication by reminding myself consistently to stay engaged and open with my body language until it becomes natural for me. As far as trying new verbal communication skills, I will attempt confrontation more often so I become comfortable with the skill. When giving feedback, my stronger points include being specific, timely, and generally observant. I plan to improve on giving objective constructive feedback that focuses on one’s actions rather than one’s innate qualities. Further, I will concentrate on giving feedback that includes a what one needs to improve upon, together with what one is successfully executing. Both of these aspects will come with practice and paying careful thought and attention when communicating. In the coming months and years, I plan to push myself to overcome some of my reservations to become a more effective and competent
Now the communication class is almost over I have realize how important is to have good communication skills, and how it is key to life. I have learned many things in this class for example ways to approach strangers. Another thing that I have learned how to handle conflict and how sometimes it could be good it not always bad and many others. The way I look things have change to have reach my goals. This class was has also taught me how to look in the “other” perceptive, and not being selfish by just seeing one side. All that I have learn will help me and other around me to be able to communicate better.
